This is one of the most informative Ant videos I have ever seen. Huge congrats on your natural delivery of your vast ant knowledge

When I was in first grade, we had ants in the classroom and no one noticed except me. They were in between the carpet and the tile floor. Thankfully, I was right beside them. Whenever I had my snacks, I would give them a small piece and they would take it. Sadly the teacher saw the ants after two months and murdered them while crushing my dreams lol-

I have gotten my first queen to take some frosting I have put in her test tub today and a few weeks ago. She had six eggs last time I checked! I'm looking foreword to moving her into the antkit set up I have if she lives.

I have the next size up with sand filling in two of the chambers. She is a Camponotus nearcticus though I did get 2 tetramotium speacies E. a few days ago. I'm going to have to move her before 10 workers because she will run out of water long before thing I think.

Joshua Werner how is the colony now?

Felix Hall it’s been four years I think he got rid of them 😂

I don't have that colony i think. The one i have now is 3 years old from chatching a queen and doing fine. Must be at least 75 workers my my guestimation. A camponotus species of some kind and one of the largest in my area. I also have a smaller colony of a smaller species.

Never knew people kept ants as pets and fed them. I googled for ants favourite food to use it as a bait to kill ants in my house and it brought me here 😑😔😔

do you think you can buy dryed insects and steam them just before feeding them to the ants (to soften the insects)
@DarkYttrium3 жыл бұрын
Nope. No nutritional value

I feed mine chocolate, cheesecake, fudge, jelly, honey, basically anything full of sugar And protein, chicken, beef, uncooked bacon rinds, any really soft cooked meats. Give them a bit of yours. And garden insect. Spiders, moths, whatever,s out there. Just boil then first. I do it on my garden fire pit and an old pan. The "spider boiler" as my daughter calls it. I first collected queen ants for my daughter, but i enjoy it as much as her since it was me who watched an antscanada video first, but it was only last year. So only been doing it a year now. I found that my local pet shop doesn't sell anything for ants but the insect food for keeping feeders well fed works for ants. But i just put anything in there on a piece of tin foil. If none of them want it, i take it out and put something else in. But 9 out of 10 things work.

How safe is it to feed ants with fruits from market? I mean, what about pesticide that've been used? Doesn't affect ants?

Hey @RobJ's Ants I have an Imortant question my ants hibernation starts soon do I need any prep or things to look out for?
@RobJsAnts8 жыл бұрын
just feed them well leading up to putting them down and cool them by 2c from normal then once our ready move them to a cold place and give them lots of water over there hibernation time
@pggametips32958 жыл бұрын
thanks :)

You need to slice the fly so they can get past that tough hard exoskeleton of the fly !

I put my ant foods on a small piece of tin foil then remove it with the food. Continually laying wet fruits on the substrate can lead to an unremovable mess (unless the ants eat EVERYthing!) :)

I may start keeping camponotus auriventris. What do you think is the best feeding for them?
@RobJsAnts8 жыл бұрын

Is it 100% necessary to give them insects for protein, or could you stick to just giving the meats like chicken? :)
@RobJsAnts8 жыл бұрын
all ant diets require supplement with live (or freshly dead) insects and a variation in sugars now and again to promote healthy differences in food, just like us. I mean I don't know about you, but I can't eat the same exact meals every day for the rest of my life and get all the nutrients I need and be completely fulfilled. while most diets and supplements can be used for an extended period of time, it is best to offer a variety to keep the colony well balanced and healthy. Protein also is typically only for brood development, the adult workers will only need sugars to continue living.
@lucyk55078 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the advice! I thought that would be the case. :) If you freeze a live insect will it kill it fairly humanely, or do you have to kill them some other way?
@RobJsAnts8 жыл бұрын
thats a ok way or you can kill instantly in boiling water
@lucyk55078 жыл бұрын
Great, thank you. Don't want to be cruel to the insects
@CMZneu8 жыл бұрын
actually the most humane way would be to freeze them, insects don't function like mammals, they don't "suffer" with cold they just become inactive and if they freeze they eventually die, i would say it's like going to sleep for them, for example if you keep mealworms in the fridge(at a certain temp) they don't die but instead stop growing and become inactive, you can keep them like this for many months to stop them from pupating and if you take them out they "wake up" again.

Boiling insects seems to turn the liquid into solid meat 🤩 Looks delicious also. And I saw one my nanitic or minor worker ant eating a boiled superworm in soy sauce 🤣

Not sure if you breed your own mealworms (which is really very simple and inexpensive) but for flies it's the same, you buy them once and them make a culture from them so you can have flies al year round for free kinda, something like this kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmaYiXSPbteGmZY (not my video) wingless fruit flies are very nice for small colonies that don't have a lot of dismembering power and have trouble slicing up the hard exoskeleton of mealworms, also you can toss them in alive(they are wingless) and let your ants hunt them, especially the more visual sp, they can't hurt your ants by biting or tossing around and don't try to burrow or hide like mealworms or roaches. Also if you breed your own mealworms you probably have baby mealworms which i find to be better than regular ones(for small ants or colonies) for some of the same reasons as above.
