This song was written during the military dictatorship in here, is about that whole era, the lyrics are very cryptic and it flew under the military censorship radar, brilliant.

This song has a deep political significance for a whole generation in Argentina. It came out during the Dirty War years, and somehow managed to go unnoticed by the Military Junta then in power. Charly, apart from being a musical genius of the first order, is nothing short of a folk hero here. Thanks for your reaction, mate. Cheers from Patagonia!

Canción de Alicia en el País is a song by Charly García, interpreted by Serú Giran composed in 1980 when Argentina was going through one of the darkest moments in its history, the last military dictatorship. The central idea of this song is to implicitly reflect (due to the then persistent censorship) the reality of the country at that time. From the title you can see the omission of "Wonderland" alluding to the traditional children's story "Alice in Wonderland" In the first stanza you can see at first a metonymy of "country" referring to the institution that governs it and then a metaphor when saying that it was not done just because, which refers to the support that the military junta had when carrying out the coup, an apostrophe when saying: "you are going to go, you are going to leave" to know that they are speaking to her; there is also a rhetorical question: "where else are you going to go?" used to mention, thanks also to the previous verses, that at that time many people wanted to go into exile only that, although many succeeded, it was very difficult to do so. Then, in the second stanza there is a pleonasm and a synecdoche when saying: "the tongue twister, the murderer kills you", pleonasm because it is redundant that the murderer murders and that the tongue twister tongue twister, referring to the general and social confusion that he reigned in the Argentine and Synecdoche nation because he takes those two examples altogether to tell Alicia that according to the military government the only truth according to them was the official one. There is an apostrophe throughout the stanza. The verses "that game that made you happy is over" can be interpreted in various ways: this "game" is a metaphor that refers to the way of life that she liked, the democracy that had ended or the revolutionary feeling that I was young then. At the beginning of the third stanza, what was said above is reiterated but arguing that the gardens were that time that she loved that it was over, and that she does not say anything about it because, according to our interpretation, it would be censored (as well as kidnapped) by the military, which did not allow any type of disagreement in any aspect. When saying: "there are no more walruses or turtles" there is a metaphor that serves to highlight the "variety" of governments that this country had: de facto military governments as opposed to democratic governments because it refers to the fact that Onganía is no longer in power (nicknamed "the walrus") or that these walruses are the military, and when saying turtle he refers to former president Arturo Illia (nicknamed "turtle"), a democratic president considered slow when making decisions, hence His nickname comes from besides having been a very honest president, perhaps too much for Argentina. Then, those "heads crushed by the same foot" that "play cricket under the moon" * are metaphors that refer to an entire country that is crushed by a single person (or institution) and its inhabitants repressed, censored, tortured and in some cases cases, missing. For this reason, the images of cricket, since this is a sport that is played in the grass, and that of "under the moon" transmit an atmosphere of a cemetery and refer to the disappearances that took place at night during the period of process. The following verse recreates the "square" thought of the military because it says: "we are in no man's land", up to here everything is normal since in that period there were many changes of political powers, which leads to the land not being from anyone, not even momentarily; but when she says "but it's mine," she takes a totally authoritarian stance because she suddenly says it's hers without saying a word to others who perhaps also want to rule this land. In the last three verses of this stanza, a paradox is first found when saying that the innocent are the culprits since they are two totally opposite concepts; there is also an intertextuality and a metaphor when saying: "the lordship says of him, the king of spades", intertextuality because the king of spades is a character in Caroll's text who is a clumsy, ignorant and incapable king; and metaphor because it refers to the president of the Military Junta, Jorge Rafael Videla, who in those times did not matter if one had done something good or bad, since that king of swords, that military junta was the one that decided what to do with the person judged; therefore, he says that the innocent are the guilty, the king of swords decided what was his fate. The last stanza begins with a metaphor of the mirror that represents reality, and explains the idea of fear and self-censorship that was installed in society to reveal it, then there is an enumeration (“you will not have power, no lawyers, no witnesses”) that it fulfills the function of explaining the impotence of the people since they had no power over themselves. Later there is a metaphor, when saying "the witches" since it refers to López Rega, creator of the triple A and the author tells Alicia to be cautious and be careful because in the future these sinister characters could return, or could return to live these same things in the future. The next verse is the only one in which the idea of hope is present when saying that we are "in everyone's land, in life" but the letter closes with an antithesis between hope and pessimism by stating that they are now in ruins and that this country was always created on other ruins, it also reflects the feeling of resignation that the people had about the present time they were living. Based on this poetry, it can be interpreted that that girl "Alicia" is nothing more and nothing less than the representation of the Argentine people since messages about the reality of Argentina in that period are implicitly developed throughout the song , always directed to Alicia, always directed towards the people since the idea was that society realize how it was living, that this so-called “Alicia” realize how the country was. Another very implicit idea that we find in the song is that, since Alice is a girl (both because of the Lewis Carroll story, and because of the name that has been chosen and because of the way in which she is called), she may be a metaphor that this is a country that needs to develop and grow, like what happens to a child.

Rob, without knowing it, you got into hot water with this, for this song IS NOT JUST ANY SONG. IT DESCRIBES THE HORROR OF THE MILITARY DICTATORSHIP IN LATE 70S AND 80S. AND IT MANAGED TO BE PLAYED ON THE RADIO WITHOUT THE VICIOUS AND GENOCIDE MILITARY EVEN KNOWING WHAT IT WAS ABOUT. It is a credit to Charly's and the others' ability to skip censorship in a mastery way. Lyrics: Opening: Who knows, Alice, this country was not made just because. You want to leave, get out, but you stay, or where else would you go? And it's that here.... the tongue-twister actually twists your tongue, (torture and "confessions") the murderer actually murders you , and it's too much for you. It's the end of the game that made you happy (freedom, democracy)-. Heartbeat: THIS PART HAS A HEARTBEAT TO CONVEY THE TERROR OF THE NIGHT OF DICTATORSHIP . Don't tell what you saw in the gardens, the dream is over . There are no more walruses or turtles (reference to a dictator from another dictatorship, Juan Carlos Onganía, called the walrus, and democratic president before Perón , Arturo Illia, called the turtle by antidemocratic media) , A river of heads crushed by the same foot play cricket under the moon . We're in nobody's land, but it's mine. THE INNOCENTS ARE THE CULPRITS, SAYS HIS HONOR, the King of Swords (in Spanish cards) . Don't say what you saw behind that looking glass, you won't have any rights, nor lawyers, nor witnessess . Light up the chandeliers for the wizards are planning to return to blur our way (the wizard was horrible José López Rega a creepy and bizarre astrologist who managed to be had as Perón's widow Isabel Perón "advisor" or puppeteer a right wing peronist who planned to kill all left wing peronists and formed the AAA, Anticommunist Argentinian Alliance who put bombs in cars and shot any left-wing peronist from socialist groups, after that the military coup impulsed by USA was given against isabel Perón to start a 30,000 massacre of leftist groups or just anybody who opposed the dictatorship, sending hundreds of artists, actors, singers, painters, journalists, radio presenters, and many others, to exile in Europe and Mexico. ) We're in the land of all, we're in life. On the past and on the future, ruins over ruins, dear Alice. Rocky part to get out of the heartbeat terror atmosphere Outro: Who knows Alice , this country was not made just because , you want to leave, to get out, but where else would you be going? And it's that here.... the tongue-twister twists your tongue, the murderer murders you, and it's too much for you. Choir: It's the end / It's the end of that / It's the end of that game that made you happy

"Wonderland" (from Lewis Carroll's Alice) is translated to Spanish as "el País de las Maravillas". Then, "Alicia en el País de las Maravillas". But the song is entitled "Canción de Alicia en el país", which only means "Alice in the land" or "in the country". What land? Argentina in the 70s and early 80s, of course, with corrupt politicians and generals, leftist terrorists and fear.

Song of Alice in the Country, is a political song against the military dictatorship who killed 30,000 people in the late 70s and 80s after popular Perón and Isabel Perón's government was given a coup d'etat. Iis a parody of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland in a terrible time of State terror were you had no justice, 20 , 25, year old people were taken out of their houses because they were against the dictatorship, tortured in 500 clandestine concentration camps, some of them with 2,500 illegal clandestine prisoners, pregnant women being taken their babies and giving them to military officer's families. Charly , David, Pedro and Oscar managed to avoid censorship because militaries did not understand metaphores, otherwise they would have had had to go to exile as many other artists like Mercedes Sosa, Víctor Heredia and so on. At the time, there weree many other military dictatorships in Latin America, all of them sponsored and financed by the United States , they instructed the militaris how to torture, rob houses, disappear people and put them in extermination camps. Imperialism exists dude and its against you. Serú Girán managed to say all theysaid in the face of these bastards
