Yu've got the tango there. bravo, there are some bossanova influences too, I see it like a sort of latin infused prog. The bass tone you hear is the fantastic Pedro Aznar "fretless" bass.

Serú Girán has long been on my radar to have a deeper look, but it's one of those things you keep postponing, with an additional reason I'll talk about below. Here in Brazil we are border neighbors of Argentina, have intense trade with each other (both countries are among the other's top trade partners), we have an EU-like common market and freedom of residence and work (though not yet without border and customs controls, but we don't even need a passport, an ordinary domestic ID card is enough), and we're always spending our vacations in each other's country (and loving it, as each country has what the other lacks and offers different experiences). Despite a supposed rivalry that's more humorous and based on soccer (a national passion in both countries, which have both won a lot of World Cups and have contributed with many of the best soccer players in history) than a serious thing, in reality we get along very well and depend a lot on each other. Rivalry or not, I challenge you to find a Brazilian who's been to Buenos Aires and doesn't find it one of the most fabulous cities on earth (which it most definitely is!) or doesn't talk with stars in the eyes about the Andes mountains and Patagonia's cold deserts and glaciers (I've been to a penguin colony there, no less! 🐧😍🥰), or an Argentine who doesn't love Brazil's beaches, tropical nature exuberance, and "savoir-vivre". Yet not only do we hardly know anything about Argentine music here (other than old tango master Carlos Gardel and some Astor Piazzolla, both long dead and not representative of contemporary Argentine culture), but it gets worse: it's hard to even get INFORMATION about Argentine music (and contemporary culture in general) here. The language barrier (Portuguese in Brazil, Spanish in Argentina) is no excuse, because we consume a lot of English-language music, and Brazilian music is fairly popular and well-known in Argentina, which makes this state of things even more unfair. Most Brazilians have never heard of Serú Girán, and I only have because of Pedro Aznar's ASTOUNDING vocal work with Pat Metheny in the 1980s (particularly "First Circle", an absolute masterpiece of an album, and I highly recommend the jaw-dropping title track, both in the studio and the live in Montreal versions with Aznar). You have no idea of what that man's voice can do! I became a fan of Aznar and that made me curious about Serú Girán, but information is so hard to get here that one doesn't know where to start. Well, I LOVED "A los Jóvenes de Ayer"! It reminded me a lot of Premiata Forneria Marconi (or PFM for short, my TOPMOST favorite prog band, and this is saying something!) because of the great musicianship and constant musical surprises and "plot twists". At least from this sample, PFM is more exuberant and emotional (they're Italian, after all!), and Serú Girán is more cerebral, but they're definitely great and I want to learn a lot more about them.

Here’s an update for you buddy! I gave a listen to the entire “Bicicleta” album. I see it’s their 3rd album , but the oldest that I found on Spotify. I really enjoyed it, particularly the last two tracks. “Tema De Nayla” (Nayla’s Theme) had such a good jazzy vibe and has soooo much incredible electric piano throughout. The last track “Encuentro Con El Diablo” (Encounter With The Devil) is loaded with great guitar and such a funky beat. I’m definitely going to look into more of their music.
@drmagic60
@drmagic60 Жыл бұрын
Another observation…. after listening to Encuentro Con El Diablo a few times, something sounded somewhat familiar. You really need to listen to the Tommy Bolin track “Post Toastee” from 1976, to compare some of the funky sections.

Lyrics of the song by Serú Girán "A Los Jóvenes De Ayer" To The Young People of Yesterday At a glance you can see Like drunks in the corner of some tango the young of yesterday They dress up nicely, they wear a toupee They kiss all the time and mourn the past Like an old lady in a matinee Look at them, look at them, they're up to something Rogues, rogues, rogues, maybe they're after power Look after them, look after them, they're kind of harmless Tell 'em, tell 'em, they're our new Dorian Grey In a taxi at SADAIC With their family Sunday tans And their kermesse faces Great values of yesterday They'll be the youngsters of always The eternal ones, the ones that appear on T.V.

In 1977 Charly and Lebón participated in a debate in the newspaper La Opinión with great tango singers who accused them of being foreigners for playing rock. This issue is partly a response to those attacks. They criticize the musicians of the past for their contradiction between their old ideals and what they ended up being.

Charly Garcia, piano, keyboards, voices and composition; David Lebon, guitar, voice and composition; Pedro Aznar, bass, keyboards, voice and composition and Oscar Moro, drums; The bass sounds like that because it doesn't have frets, like Jaco Pastorius's, also it must be said that after Seru Giran, Pedro was called to play in the Pat Metheny Group.

Bro, I was out, I came back home and... I found this reaction ? r u kidding me ? LOL you hit me hard with this mega surprise! here we go... Serú Girán was the best latinamerican band ever, they weren't only prog, also jazz fusion and pop rock, Charly Garcia is a crazy genius, who at the age of 12, yes... at the age of 12, he was a piano teacher, the heart and main composer of the band. David Lebon fantastic guitarist, composer and singer, he shares with Charly the lead voice of Serú in the short discography of the band, 1978/1982 (in 1992 they rejoined to released their last studio album), Pedro Aznar, an absolute fretless bass genius, also singer and composer, Oscar Moro R.I.P wonderful drummer. There is a lot to discover about this superband, knowing your musical taste, these are my recommendations "Eiti Leda" (great prog song), do you want classic music and emotional ? ;), "Desarma y Sangra" so beautiful and... "Cinema Verité" incredible song. Many thanks for the MEGA surprisse!

Intriguing, very interesting. Very nice….vocals are lovely. How do you get that sound on the bass? I’ve heard it on other jazz albums from this period…embarrassed that I cannot remember the artist. Edit: it’s on Joni Mitchell’s album Hajira…..Jaco Pastorius. Have you ever heard anything from that wonderful,album, Brandon? A wonderful synthesis of folk and jazz….with Pat Methany, Jaco Pastorius….and others. I would like to suggest the song Amelia to you, if you haven’t heard it.

Hi Brandon, some of guys already summarized the previous history of this progressive rock band or supergroup from the late 70s, 80s. You just have to dive into the previous group La Maquina de Hacer Pajaros (The Birds Making Machine) just add that among their influences are also Weather Report and PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi) You will notice the great bassist Pedro Aznar plays his bretless bass emulating the sound of his idol of those times Jaco Pastorius.
