yo guys, I have a theory about the lore of the game (it is about Zark, bandits and army actually, not about zombies or RAT or sth. else) and also, there are many spoilers in this comment so, since "Double Cross" mission added, we know that Zark has contacs with the army, but how? Zark is a person who steals food, tools, ect. Why army has connections with the leader of bandits, Zark? well, there isn't enough proof to answer this question but at least, we can make theories, can't we? First of all, let's have a look to bandit's clothes. There is a "bandit" writing on their chestplate, don't forget this because we will need this information later in this comment. also, we know that army is really weakened at the moment. I mean, they even had to let zombies into of the city. But how did they became that weak? so, according to my theory, A lot of soliders didn't take serious these zombies. Despite their discipline, they thought that these zombies were not strong enough to fight back. But they were wrong. because of the mutations, many zombies such as Vexeron, Zricera, Mothena were born and these mutations, were able to fight against army very easily. some food warehouses are destroyed because of these attacks. And also zombies were also blocking the roads, were causing support not to come. Mutations like Mothena, causing air support not to come. Army was on its own Some soliders went starving. As you can guess, soliders couldn't fight well when they were starving. And at this point, they had to let zombies into the city, they retreated. The goal of the army was changed, they weren't trying to help survivors anymore, they were trying to keep the apocalypse under control. As they were weakened, they were barely doing it. They also couldn't ask for food from safe houses. They were the army, they were the ones who had to give food. the army was going to fail their new mission too. They were getting weaker and weaker every day. To avoid this problem, they had to make a desicion between stealing foods, or asking for foods. First, they tried their chance by asking for it but no body was willing to give their food. It was the army, they had to give food so there was no other choice, even if they didn't want this, they "had" to steal food. But army didn't wanted to be seem as bad so commander decided to open a new team called bandits but this team, should have understood that this team was affiliated with the army. So, on they were going to have a sign saying bandit on their chestplate. And that's why we've checked the bandit clothes. They shouldn't have seem as soliders in army. everything had to be secret. So while opening this team, commanders didn't even inform many soldiers. (probably Wilson was one of them) basically, this team was going to steal food, tools, weapons, supplies (ammo, medkits, granades) ect. so, if you're going to ask "then why is Zark leader of bandits?" there isn't enough proof to answer this question too. But since we know Zark's himself has connactions with the army, i think the only thing that can happen is this: Zark was a solider in those times. There were no one willing to become the leader of bandits, none of the soliders wanted to be seen as an enemy of the survivors. Except Zark and he wanted to become the leader of the bandits, but this theory isn't ends here because, why he wanted to become the enemy of people? we know how smart Zark is. I mean let's have a look to "poke the bear" mission. Zark knew that we were going to sneak in to the bandit camp. So he set a trap (I don't think Patrick gave the information. Because he was going to betray Zark, we see this in "Double Cross" mission, he was only waiting for the right time and it was the right time. Why would he give the information to Zark?) also, he shoots Stan later in the mission. But the point is, he knew that Stan wasn't a normal survivor, he knew Stan was infector. Let's have a look to investigation mission, we see Zark while saying "one's already been captured" this is the proof that he knew Stan was an infector. So, he was smart and I think he knew if no one accepts that role, the army was going to fall and there won't be anyone who can keep zombies under control. So thanks to his brain, he accepted this role. and, this theory doesn't ends here too because let's have a look to investigation mission once more, "one's already been captured, soon we will get out hands on Robert and also put him on a leash" that's what Zark said. Zark was hunting infectors, but why? I think, in time bandits become stronger (even stronger than army, maybe) and Zark decided to hunt down infectors in order to make a cure, or at least help army making a cure. or else, why would he want to hunt down infectors? sorry for my English, it's kinda bad. I did my best to type all this text. If you have any questions, i'll be waiting for them under this comment also, about this video don't forget that Joseph and Eugene was Biox workers (if you check wiki, you'll see) and in Stan's though luck, we can see Zark didn't steal Stan's scorpion because army has weapons thanks to Biox, they just need tools, foods and other supplies
