how: skinned cube with a bone in each vertex of the cube, put a block in each of those vertices and join the blocks with springs constraints, make a script that makes the bones be in the cframe in each block repeatedly, and that's it!

How? There is many little beams in the cubes (attachment + springconstraint), you just have to adjust the stiffness of the beams and you might get something like that!

the object's shadows doesnt have penumbras and since blender's cycles pathtracing has shadow penumbras it cant be a simple render trick, its most likely a mesh with bones
