Great tutorial! I like to fly the drone behind me then set a fly to point in front of me. That way when the battery is low it is only just past me, or over me. But it all depends on the subject I'm shooting and where I can get access too.

By the way, you can import raw files into AE natively. If you want to skip Camera Raw, you can export XMPs though I think DNG contains the metadata changes so you might just need to save in LR. Usually the first file in an image sequence is where AE gets its metadata from, so I usually apply corrections from a representative photo to the first image and open in AE and my LR changes show up in camera raw. If I’m just doing a shot or two, I do it all in AE. You can go to interpret footage to adjust Camera Raw. Any graduated changes can be applied in AE before export. This way you don’t need extra files and you keep working with raw files until the final export.

Good job! Nice video! I would do it: stack import into Photoshop, photos get stacked and positioned way better then warp can. Then import in premiere and still do a aggressive warp stabilizer, rock solid. But same results probably 😉

Thanks for sharing this! I've tried similar technique a couple of months ago and I have a problem with every shot having the horizon tilted in a different angle. Have you encountered this as well? btw I've also used the correct shutter speed rule so it was I think a couple of seconds at least for my Phantom 4 Pro - may be that added some instability for the video.

Hey Stanley! Not exactly sure what the issue is but maybe this can help. First thing, make sure the angle of the horizon is calibrated when you start. Then anytime there is strong wind you will have always have more difficulties keeping the drone stable. Gusts tend to throw the drone around a bit. If you look at the hyperlapse we did over the lake it was actually a pretty calm day. The one we did over the forest (the second one) it was really windy. I had to stabilise that quite a lot and the second half of the flight got really bad. When it come so to shutter speed rules I say don't get too caught up in it for this. I say just expose the shot correctly instead of calculating frame rates and shutter speeds and stuff. Longer shutter speeds are going to give you softer images. Not sure if I understood what you said correctly but if you meant you used a 2 seconds exposure, then you will definitely have a big problem getting sharp images. 2 seconds for a moving drone makes it practically impossible to remain stable the whole time. Again, I may have misunderstood that part. - Jonas

Thanks for reply Jonas! What I did for testing with jpeg sequence was: set time interval for 2s, shutter to 1s, and fly steadily in manual mode. I know that longer shutter speeds result in more motion blur and that's what I was after to keep image cinematic. I know wind and other factors, especially in manual mode, can influence the flow quite a bit, but if compared to sped-up video (even 20x) - there was definately something else happening with the gimbal. It was almost like after each shot camera re-balanced and it didn't match balance from the previous frame! I'll definitely have to test again with intelligent flight modes again, may be it will act differently then.

Ah, I see. And Yes, definitely try with the intelligent flight modes next time. Maybe also do a comparison between one flight with long shutter speed (1s like you did last time) and one flight with more of a "normal" shutter speed and see if you can make it look better. My guess is that Warp stabiliser is going to work better when the images are sharper (not so much motion blur) and then you can maybe add some kind of edge blur, kind of like a tilt-shift effect, to the clip in post production for a more cinematic look. Hey thanks! It is a quality thing but marginal difference really. If you are uploading to for example KZbin I wouldn't worry about exporting to ProRes 422 HQ, bigger size and no noticeable difference in quality. Really good tutorial. Next time try 3DLutCreator to beef up your images via a LUT used in Aftereffects. That gives you a dynamic color correction option for each image. With those LUT's you can do impossible things including dynamic masks etc. Dynamic is the magic word, on every image. Have a look, I tried it and will never go back to Lightroom KINDERGARDEN adjustments. :-)

Ive literally been following this video step by step to make my first timelapse but i reached the point at 6:30 where you say to export as an apple pro res, but what if you have pc? my available options that show are DV 24p advanced, DV NTSC, DV PAL, gopro cineform, intel codec, uncompressed UYVY, V210 10bit or none. which one should i choose?

Sorry for the slow reply Brock - If you're in the US DV NTSC is great (us standard) in Europe use PAL. It relates to the framerate. NTSC is 29.97 frames per second and Pal is 25. Ultimately that's because of the old flicker rate of Televisions because of the two power sources we have.

What is the benefit to creating the hyperlaps this way versus shooting video to speed up later? My guess is you get a higher quality because you’re shooting raw. Is it much higher than sped up 4k?

Hey Andrew! So the first reason is what you said, the RAW resolution allows us to get so much information out of the image and we can modify and play with the look a lot more than a video clip. The second reason is file size. A 15-20min 4K video clip is going to be a huge file and a beast for your computer to process. Having a stack of still images that you can work with separately and then export into a video clip that you can somewhat control the size and format of is in my opinion better and easier. Hey! Glad you liked it! Lightroom and After Effects. So first Lightroom to touch up the shots and export all of them to jpegs. Then After Effects to create the hyperlapse video clip and add some extra warp stabiliser. Good luck!

2 Questions 1-How did you figure the amount of time allowed to shoot at 2mph, and allowing enough battery to get back? I’d guess with 20 min flight time you could safely allow 15 min. shooting at 2mph and have more than enough time to fly back at high speed. 2nd - if I don’t want to fly in a straight line, how do you do a gentle enough Rotation for a smooth curve or altitude change?

Hi Jeff! A lot of it is practise but here are some pointers. First, when doing a hyperlapse you really don't want to move too fast. When we do normal hyperlapses on the ground we end up taking one photo about every 8 seconds or so and we only move one step forward between each photo. So we're talking really slow movement. With this setup we are shooting one photo every five seconds that means 12 frames/photos every minute of flying. If we give ourselves about 15 minutes of flight time for the interval photos we will end up with 180 shots which will end up being only 5 seconds of video if we are creating a standard video clip with 30 frames per second. Normally when we do timelapses we like to aim for enough photos to do a 10s final timelapse so 5s is really short. But as long as everything goes as planned, a 5s clip is still usable for most (of our) productions. The best way to do it to be sure you have enough battery to get home is to set the start point away from your home point. So either start further back so you end up flying past your start point during the hyperlapse flight. This way your flight home will be shorter. The other way would be to start all the way at the end, or where you think you will end and do the hyperlapse while the drone is flying towards home. We did this for the second hyperlapse in the intro sequence because it was pretty windy and we didn't want to risk any having problems on a low battery. We are still experimenting with your second question so I don't have a great answer yet. Setting/Programming a flight path is one way to do it. If you just want a slow rotation I still think you can use the point of interest rotation flight mode but make sure you radius is a lot bigger than you would think. Otherwise you will end up with something like what I had in the video. A fast rotation but with no time to see the clouds moving. I hope this at least partly answers your questions. Would 1mph speed yield more frames? Longer clip? I'm thinking with my P4P I'd have a good 20min or more, especially if I start at my end point & fly backwards for the filming.CAN we even set it at 1mph?

Going slower wouldn't necessarily give you more frames but it would shorten the distance flying back (or to your starting point, whichever you choose) and that would possibly allow you to keep the drone in the air a bit longer. So in that sense you would get more shots and a longer clip. On the other hand I don't think that the drones available today can be set to anything slower than 2mph. Have fun playing around with it!! 52Things: Rob & Jonas Then that’s not the thing to do. Time is the thing. At 2mph you only travel 0.73 of a mile in 22 Minutes. Easy enough to fly fast to my “end point” and film traveling backwards for the 22-25 Minutes and be back at Home Point when battery is done.

Hi! No worries! Just scale up the footage enough that the black "border" is outside of the frame. Basically, make the clip bigger than the video window. For example, if you are editing in Final Cut Pro - go to the video inspector and increase the SCALE ALL option. If you are editing in Adobe Premier - go to the Effect Control settings of the clip and do the same. Since a normal HD video resolution is 1920x1080 pixels and the resolution of your timelapse video clip is quite a bit larger (if you kept the dimensions the same as the photos that you took), you shouldn't risk loosing too much quality.
