When the five registers get "locked" by damage, it's not that you can't put a card there -- it's that whatever card was there when you were damaged is *stuck*. So if your last card on the 5 spot was "U-turn", you're stuck doing a U-turn as your last instruction until you repair. :)

Mr. Tom Vasel, I just have to say THANK YOU. I have had this game on my shelf for a year. I discovered KZbin and all the helpful reviews and playthroughs just a few weeks ago. I watched this review and went "wow!", so this is similar to Haunting House, with extras. I read the rules a year ago, and on the shelf it went, watched your video last week, and played the game tonight. I love it. Also, thanks so much for your review of Robot Turtles. My grandkids are very interested in Robo Rally, but are are only 6 and almost 5, so not ready for it yet. Thanks to your heartfelt review of Robot Turtles, it is being shipped to my house this week. Really, thank you, thank you!

When Tom said that he would love to see this game in action: This is one of those games, that will become even greater, when programmable LCD tables reach maturity for customers. Basically hardened giant multi-touch-pads that are either integrated into table or can be mounted on a table. Then, if the tablescreen version of Robo Rally ever came out, you could enjoy seeing it all in action (with animations etc.) with the added benefit of less upkeep during playing the game.

if only each player had a small portable electronic device they could look at without others seeing it

One of my favorite games of all time. We have a yearly get together of internet friends that lasts a week, and it is not over until we play robo rally. We did a five board map once with 4 in a square, and the fifth above the middle, so you could fall through from the top onto the bottom boards. Took like 8 hours, and at the end the winner one by ONE PHASE. Everyone stayed in because those far behind played spoiler to keep it close.

how many laps do you do normally tom? just one or multiple because then i could understand a 1 lapped large board if you use multiple laps on short ones

Rather than unlimited lives, we play that each life permanently fries a card slot. So after first death you only get 8 cards, then 7... After 5 you have a permanently locked register, and so on.

I almost screamed when Tom ripped out that page from the manual :P but GREAT review. One of the first games I remember playing when I was a kid.

I just got Volt Robot Battle Arena. It has some much better game mechanics and would be interesting to mash up with Roborally to make it less....discouraging

I've always thought of the 3 lives as more of a "mercy" rule.

It's one of my favorites! I have the 1995 Wizards version with metal robots. My wife and I painted them by hand and love them. She always plays the cute Twonky (old TV) lol Tom is right: Just play with two boards every other setup will either be boring or end up with one in the lead and all the others laging behind. And of course use 2 additional weapons or gadgets from the 'Armed and Dangerous' set. It's so much fun!

I'm pretty open minded about different board games but I was not a fan of this game. You can randomly lose entire turns if you only get rotate cards, and it happens more often than you'd think. Determining turn order is very tedious and that is coupled with a serious runaway winner problem. I played it twice and it was a very frustrating, unenjoyable experience both times. I hope I never have to play it again. It's an interesting concept, however too much randomness and aggravating game mechanics ruined it for me. If you're looking for a more enjoyable racing board game, go with Formula D, it doesn't have any robots, but it's a way better game.

I just purchased the current version of RoboRally yesterday. While this is a great game, I found the component quality of the current version to be extremely poor, and I was a little shocked you didn't mention it. The cardboard is paper thin, the way the stickers attach to the flags doesn't look very nice IMHO. Even the box top was caved in a little due to the poor quality. I guess MtG didn't make enough money to support this game very well! ;)

A note for any interested viewers: Robo Rally had recently been reprinted by Avalon Hill, so it's actually fairly easy to come by now. It's not even very expensive...

I'll play it with friends who really like it, but it's not a game I'll ever suggest we play. There's really no planning ahead, and most times that I've played I end up going in circles or stuck on a conveyor belt. Too many other games out there that are much more fun.
