Robocop is one of those movies that sounds like it should be cheesy low budgets schlock on paper. Then you get to the Murphy death scene where they blow his hand off, then his arm, just the viciousness and callousness of it, and you realize this film is a step above (though even that scene could’ve been envisioned as more over the top, luke something out of an 80s Sam Raimi film. What makes the film a cut above is down to Verhoven’s vision and managing to execute the film perfectly, where the satire, over-the-top violence, and the meanness/seriousness/drama are perfectly balanced in all the places it could’ve gone one (wrong) way or another. And of course, Peter Seller’s performance, the costume design, and worldbuilding.

The movie was a huge satire on American culture at the time, the cooperations, the violent action movies, the commercials, the cars, the media. Also has Christ visuals peppered through the film, RoboCop got crowned at his birth (the party) and by the end he's walking on water. When big blockbusters were made by smart people.

4:30 the actor Kurtwood Smith (Clarence) said in an interview once that during the scene where they are shooting up that part of town, the pyro team that blows up the store for the movie used a charge that was bigger than expected and it went off way closer than they thought it would. So a few days later they saw in there checks that he and the other guys were payed extra for "doing their own stunt" as a way to make it up to them for almost getting blown up during filming.

About RoboCop's face and "vulnerable mouth region", he doesn't have face or something, it's just Murphy's brain inside Terminator-like endoskeleton with face over it to "honor" his persona and keep it "human" in core. I hope you are planning 2 and 3, so you will see.

Robocop 2 is a decent sequel and definitely worth a watch. It doesn't have the deeper layer underneath like the first movie but it's a well made, enjoyable action movie. Everything that came afterwards should be ignored, it's just attempting to milk the franchise with terrible movies and a TV show targeted at kids (no more R-rated).

Robocop's ace. This was back when a director and his / her effects and production team kept pushing against physical barriers and had to take the time to break through. They couldn't go with the first thing and had to redesign, step back, mull over, try from multiple angles. Robocop's suit went through a lot of redesigns. The script had a lot of polishing. For all it's wonderful b-movie shlock what came out from it was pure gold. One of the issues I have with CGI is that you can achieve anything far too easily, and it doesn't necessarily look good. The crew of Robocop had to slave over everything to make it work, and in the extra time it took great ideas small and large were born. Also, it's hilarious.

Enjoyable reaction, glad you liked the movie. Shooting Robocop in the mouth would not kill him, btw. Underneath the skin his skull is completely robotic, and heavily armoured. Have you seen Die Hard (1988)? Not only the greatest action movie of the 80's but maybe the greatest action movie of all times. Another great action movie from the 80's with great car chase sequences is The Road Warrior, the 1981 second installement of the Mad Max franchise. And while we're on car chases, two other movies that have very impressive and exciting car stunts are Mad Max Fury Road from 2015, the 4th Mad Max installement, and Ronin, an action spy thriller from 1998. There are two lenghty car chase scenes who are among the very best ever.

As a side note about shooting him in the face (or his face somehow being vulnerable) Crazy thing is that is not true. They basically skinned his face and put it over the machine. The idea was if he didn't have a face (his own) to look at it would cause him to have an even worse psychological breakdown. But under his face its basically completely bullet proof. You'll destroy the skin on top but literally do zero long term harm to him. Robocop is insanely durable. Short of literal anti-tank armor piercing weaponry he will basically shrug it off. (An even then it might only dent him)

Robocop 2 is definitely worth watching. Not as good as the first, but it's from the director of Empire Strikes Back. For a sequel film it's very entertaining. Robo3 however is crap and should be avoided.

I like Robocop 2 more than 1. Is the same thing for me as Terminator 1 and 2.

Robocop 2 should be seen. Forget Robocop 3
