Robocop is one of those movies that sounds like it should be cheesy low budgets schlock on paper. Then you get to the Murphy death scene where they blow his hand off, then his arm, just the viciousness and callousness of it, and you realize this film is a step above (though even that scene could’ve been envisioned as more over the top, luke something out of an 80s Sam Raimi film. What makes the film a cut above is down to Verhoven’s vision and managing to execute the film perfectly, where the satire, over-the-top violence, and the meanness/seriousness/drama are perfectly balanced in all the places it could’ve gone one (wrong) way or another. And of course, Peter Seller’s performance, the costume design, and worldbuilding.
@johnheale60004 жыл бұрын
The movie was a huge satire on American culture at the time, the cooperations, the violent action movies, the commercials, the cars, the media. Robocop's ace. This was back when a director and his / her effects and production team kept pushing against physical barriers and had to take the time to break through. They couldn't go with the first thing and had to redesign, step back, mull over, try from multiple angles. Robocop's suit went through a lot of redesigns. The script had a lot of polishing. For all it's wonderful b-movie shlock what came out from it was pure gold. One of the issues I have with CGI is that you can achieve anything far too easily, and it doesn't necessarily look good. The crew of Robocop had to slave over everything to make it work, and in the extra time it took great ideas small and large were born. Also, it's hilarious.

As a side note about shooting him in the face (or his face somehow being vulnerable) Crazy thing is that is not true. They basically skinned his face and put it over the machine. The idea was if he didn't have a face (his own) to look at it would cause him to have an even worse psychological breakdown. But under his face its basically completely bullet proof. You'll destroy the skin on top but literally do zero long term harm to him. Robocop is insanely durable. Short of literal anti-tank armor piercing weaponry he will basically shrug it off. (An even then it might only dent him)
