More trivia - Paul Veerhoven threw the script in the trash when he first got it. His wife actually fished it out and read it.. she told him "I think theres some good here.. and the hero is killed in the first few minutes". He was like "oooh.. that's different". Peter Weller studied with a mime coach for months leading up to production, only to have to throw out all he'd learned and trained for after putting that heavy suit on. They had to shut production down for a week or 2... and his mime coach Moni Yakim was flown in to retraiin him.. and suited up with Peter so he could see how to work the suit. Robocop's movements were initially suppoed to be fluid and snakelike. After his mime coach got a feel for the suit he said "It's no longer a snake.. it's a beast.. everything has to be big.. the accents, the movements have to be sharp and staccato." The film was shot around Houston Texas in the summertime.. and they would have to routinely pour the sweat out of the Robosuit.. expecially the boots.. as Peter was losing pounds of fluid per day. Every single shot is done analog. There are no difital FX. Even "Robovision" is done with analog photographic overlays. There's a new documentary on the series called "ROBODOC".. some of it is on youtube now. It looks to be the definitive doc on the series.

That was a true 80's popcorn movie. It had decent acting and pretty good script with some great moments of comedic levity among the gratuitous violence. It was one of my favorite movies of the 80's.
@SimoExMachina2
@SimoExMachina2 3 жыл бұрын
It's more than just a "popcorn movie"! It has really deep philosophical undertones underneath all the humor, violence and cheesyness. It's ultimately a question about what it means to be human. What it means to be alive. Alex Murphy by all accounts died at the beginning of the movie, when the thugs shred his mortal coil to pieces. He may have "survived" long enough for his remains to be turned into a machine, but ultimately there was not much to save. His brain and some parts of the body. When he was made into the "Robocop", he also lost many of the things that tied him into what we call normal life - his family, his job, his partners. He became an object of the OCP and a law-enforcement machine to patrol the streets. The theme of this film and to some degree, Robocop II, is about Murphy's struggle to accept his new machine form and trying to decide, if he is now a machine or still a human.

One of the hardest scenes to film in this was when they toss the keys to Robocop as he's on the way out to the car. It took them so many takes because it was very difficult for Peter Weller to make the catch wearing that suit and it took all day before he finally got it. Robocop 2 isn't as bad as people say in the comments, it's actually a pretty solid sequel. I think they're mistaking it for Robocop 3 which is indeed terrible (and doesn't even have Peter Weller).

Starship Troopers also had the same writing partners as Robocop 1. It is based on a Robert A. Heinlein book that also inspired James Cameron (Terminator 1&2, Titanic, Avatar) when he wrote Aliens (first sequel to Alien), but writers Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner made some changes, writing the movie as a more obvious satire of militarism and fascism, not totally unlike Robocop. There's similar style dark humor, excessive violence and the casting choices were purposely made to look like squarejawed heroes of wartime propaganda movies. As for Robocop 2, Frank Miller (comic books: Sin City, Batman story Dark Knight Returns Daredevil comics, being the creator of DD characters Electra, Bullseye and Stick and the Born Again storyline) partly wrote it, but he was hampered by studio meddling and had a terrible time writing it. In the story of Robocop 2, there's even a scene where there's a board meeting, where board members give suggestions to change Robocop's programming, to make him more agreeable and politically correct to the public at large, reflecting Miller's feelings on the writing. I still consider it a worthy sequel. Veteran director Irwin Kershner's (SW Ep. 5: Empire Strikes Back) direction is fine and the movie holds up pretty well even today. There's a comic book version of Miller's original version of the screenplay, which differs quite a lot from the final movie they made. Miller also got writing credit on Robocop 3, but the movie was heavily rewritten with a PG-13 rating in mind and aimed at a much younger audience. Robert Weller did not reprise his role s Murphy, and was replaced with Robert Burke, while Nancy Allen, once again, played Lewis. The movie was put on hold for a long time because of Orion's bankruptcy and released years later, to an uninterested audience. Sony's reboot rakes the basic idea of the first one, has a protagonist called Alex Murphy like the original, but also does changes to the core concept, also toning down the violence to PG-13 level. It also has some elements of satire, but they don't feel integral to the plot or particularly poignant.

And here it is - my favorite movie of all time: a harsh socio-political satire masquerading as a goofy action film. Ed Neumier wrote and Verhoeven directed such brilliant depictions of an American future as shaped by what was already happening around them in the 80s. Make no mistake, it is not a coincidence that while there is a rival robot to fight, it is not the main villain. Instead, the villain is a multinational corporation dealing in military weaponry but acting as a friendly local company...remember, it's Omni CONSUMER Products. This movie was a harsh, stern commentary on the move towards privatization of the American police force and the extreme corporatization of the American military, two things that have sadly come to fruition in droves. The framing device of the news segments and ads were a response to the new 24-hour news cycle introduced in the 80s with channels like CNN, and the writer and director's worry that such constant news being owned by such massive corporations would only lead to skewed or dangerously-curated news meant to manipulate, which of course also came true as we all now know. Most of the police force knowing they're doing something wrong when they're instructed to kill Murphy after the battled with ED-209 but doing it anyway is probably influenced by Verhoeven himself who as a child grew up in The Hague during World War II and saw first-hand the atrocities of war and the ability of men wearing a uniform to follow orders blindly. One of the saddest moments that I only ever really thought about after rewatching this movie a million times, is just after Murphy kills Clarence Bodicker. Lewis says, "Murphy...I'm a mess." and Murphy responds, "They'll fix you. They fix everything." Initially we think "Good, Lewis doesn't die!!" before thinking harder and realizing that the kind of fixing OCP did to Murphy does not bode well for Lewis, and that indeed the power we've granted to these corporations means the game is and always will be fixed against us, and there is no fixing a mega corp can do that would ever be of benefit to us. Ultimately this is a movie about the fears of the little people in society losing control - even officers were reduced to just numbers and devices to be harvested for corporate use even after death while those same corporations incite violence and fund drug sales in our communities to undermine the property values so that they can gentrify and build their own "megacity" (Delta City) on the ashes of it. And finally the movie is one giant Ship of Theseus paradox - we see Murphy stripped of everything; body parts, memories, control, and we are left to ask what is a man when you remove everything from him? What is a soul? Do we have one? How do we keep it? The descent into robot with no control and his ascent back to reclaiming his humanity is beautiful to me. Like you said, by the end we are cheering loudly for him to say what we want him to say when asked his name: Murphy, not Robocop. Great reaction, glad you enjoyed it.

Another fun point about the cinematography: Robocop is first seen from a frog's eye perspective, but as he becomes more human again the perspective changes to normal eye-level. Edit: Note that the ones in charge of attacking RoboCop and the ones who open fire first are the same SWAT he humiliated on his first outing (by showing them up and solving the whole hostage crisis alone). So I'd bet there's a whole heap of resentment behind their shooting at him, along with thinking he's just a crazy machine. Edit edit: Also, Emil gets the most cruel death because he's the most sadistic member of the villains - Boddicker avoids going after civilians (mostly because he doesn't want the extra attention), and the others are in it for the money and the party lifestyle. But Emil is the guy who harasses and threatens to murder some random kid working their way through college.

Peter Weller really did a hell of a job because it was shot in the summer and they had to run a makeshift air conditioning system into the suit to keep him cool.

I believe this movie still holds the records for most squibs in a movie for the boardroom scene. They basically strapped a load of them on the guy, shot it, then decided to have another go, rigged him with more, put him back on the table, and shot some more. Absolutely devastated the guy.

Robocop is everything BUT a simple action movie. It's one of Verhoeven's best movies. And my favorites of him along with Flesh & Blood and Starship Troopers. If you haven't watched ST, definitely check it out : same director, same screenwriter, same composer (Robocop's main theme is genius), same awesomeness.

The only sequel worth watching is Robocop 2. Verhoeven does not return to direct but it was directed by Irvin Kershner who also directed The Empire Strikes Back. Also it's the only sequel where Weller returns as Murphy. Robocop 2 is not as good as the first movie, but it's an ok sequel. The other sequel, the reboot movie, the Prime Directives TV movies...don't bother. The only other Robocop media I can recommend is the live-action series from 1994. Of all the other Robocop movies, (even Robocop 2) I feel it's this series that came closest to capturing the feel of the original film. Unfortunately it was only around for 1 season with 24 episodes. I've not seen it out on DVD or anything, so it's kind of hard to find.

The Taurus which Robocop drove, was a fairly new car for Ford back then, so they got that in as product placement. One of it's competitors was the Pontiac 6000, so the bad guys driving the "6000 SUX" was a thinly veiled cut down of it.

Glad you loved it. I love these movies with a TON of social commentary in it! Starship Troopers has a lot of this too. And who knew going into a movie called... Robocop, that there would be a lot of great writing, and some actual tender scenes. When he's in his old home, and has the flashback of his wife saying she loved him and it fades off, just the look on Robo's face, he's truly pissed and smashes that TV Real Estate agent... still gives me chills. And Verhoeven's movies are famous for the gore. And no one else's movies have those powerful gun hits (or are they splats?) like his movies have! Oh, Robo 2 isn't too bad, but 3 is pretty aweful.

Directed by Irvin Kirshner (Empire Strikes Back) and written by Frank Miller (Sin City, The Dark Knight Returns, Daredevil) it should have been better but rumored studio interference was so invasive and made them both so unhappy Kirshner retired afterward and Miller swore off Hollywood for a decade until Robert Rodriguez courted him back to do Sin City. Still, it's worth seeing and Phil Tippet's stop motion is some of the best of his career and one of the last uses of the technique for creature/character FX in a Hollywood production. Tippet and crew transitioned to CGI to animate the J-park Dinos the very next year.

Try watching with this perspective: it's not about Murphy discovering his new life as a cyborg, it's about a machine coming to terms with its human emotions and memories of a past life. The face they cover with the line "they made this to honor him," delivered by the titular character itself. None of Murphy save for limited parts of his brain, plus heart, lungs, and digestive tract, remain.
