The video may not be out yet, but Masamune Shirow's other cyberpunk publications like Black Magic (1983), Dominion and Appleseed (both 1985) were long before Robocop (1987). The original manga publication for Ghost in the Shell was 1989 but I think you see the origins of Shirow's work. Now if the video is talking about the inferior (but still fun) Hollywood version of Ghost in the Shell, I can see some arguments being made. I still have three hours before Mayo's video debuts.

I can tell you one thing. Robocop covers its bases so thoroughly as a character led plot of human augmentation and corruption, it makes writing anything else in that area seem derivative almost automatically. I figured this out as I’m currently writing a graphic novel with human augmentation also as a central theme and I am REALLY having to make the utmost of my specific themes and subtextual content to make the character driven plotting and tone etc, feel unique. If someone asked you to write a movie about a time traveler chased by a cyborg, that could go almost anywhere but you’re still left dealing with the most basic core aspects of humanity in common to deal with, let alone necessary moments that both have to use. Making that feel unique is hard work, but it means you can go from Terminator to Frankenstein. Same action, wildly different in execution.

The original anime and manga of ghost in the shell is too complex to be a movie. The story is too deep and extremely complex and complicated when it’s come to politics and cybernetic engine. Ghost in the shell is a pure classic of cyberpunk the queen of nostalgia.

As someone who loves Mamoru Oshii’s films including GiTS (1995), this was the first time i’ve ever seen anything about the Holywood remake. I am in total shock. What a dumbed down bastardisation. And if you hadn’t known mayo, there’s a new GiTS anime adaptation coming out next year, done by Science Saru, who’s worked on fantastic movies and series before. I’m hoping it’ll be more faithful to the manga’s tone, because it deserves to be adapted that way too!

I always felt like this movie failed for the reasons listed at the beginning but all anyone paid attention to was the weakest argument which was "The Major isn't asian". Um.. she was a cyborg body based on a Russian model and god knows how many different foreign cyborg bodies before that. It's literally called "Ghost in the Shell" referencing the fact that a human consciousness is in another vessel. Meanwhile everything else in the film and its lack of focus on what the actual original story was about is just staring you in the face. It was a Hollywood interpretation of Ghost in the Shell. They took a story about what it even means to be human and turned it into Robocop. I love Robocop, but that's NOT why I loved Ghost in the Shell.

i was a great fan of Masamune when i was young, because gals, guns and bots, why not? And his work was a total cyberpunk since the beginning, with mangas like Black Magic, Dominion, Appleseed, his work has always the same trend, GITS is no difference. I like the animated movie a lot, still does, but i agree its kinda of Oshii personal take on it, but no doubt one of the best movies ever made in Japan. The american version of this is the "everything wrong" with western artists, you see, most of the influences of Ghost in the Shell came from the West, cyberpunk, detective novels, full technocracy, decadent mega cities, corporation ruling over governments, dog eat dog cops routine, and the japanese artist could filter and syphon all these themes and convert the concept and ideas to a Eastern/Oriental masterwork in a sense. If you guys desagree, you can at least say it has its own style. Its the same thing with movies and games, one good example is Resident Evil, its a zombie apocalypse game in the USA imagined by japanese people, everything has a unique flavor because it borders one diferent kinda of reality that we all loved. Now when western trying to reimagined the thing they created and inspired previously, with a bit of spice coming from Rising Sun nation, they do the most poor adaptation they could imagine, its not only making safe choices for overbudget production, its not understand their culture, their work, and even the public they want to trying to produce, sell and profit from. And if you do not understand these things, just dont do the thingy. By the way i dont think the movie is bad, i just think its dumb... Make for lazy people by lazy people, it does not have the "artsy" and profound line of thinking of the original material.

In the manga, the only thing known about the protagonists is that they are not actually named Motoko Kusanagi. It is just a codename. Even the character's original race and gender is unknown. One would think that it would be hard to mess up an adaptation when the source has that much wiggle room but they found a way.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the blatant Robocop ripoff. I hate when a movie adaptation discards the entire premise of the original material. The main theme of GITS was a society where almost everyone is cyborg, to the point that the only guy who has no cybernetic implants in the department was seen as a curiosity. At some point in the comic it's discussed that the protagonist was over 70 years old, showing how long the practice of putting human brains in robot bodies has been goin on.

There is a sequence in the original comic that is quite tangent to the Hollywood version and could possibly have been adapted as that origin story. It's the thing about the brainwashed refugees. (later adapted into a plotline for SAC if I remember correctly) It is also clear MK has a very strong out of character (and somewhat odd at that) reaction to this incident, which may mean it hints at something deeper. The Robocop thing probably still would be the actual inspiration due to all the other minor pattern similarities.

One of the points of the anime is that Motoko has a subdued personality, little backstory and comes across as cold, while the Puppeteer is flamboyant, aggressive, and has an appetite for life. If Motoko had a more colorful personality, there wouldn't be much of a conflict in the connection between them. It's a deliberate, and important, decision to switch from the manga style Motoko to focus the story on this one element - which drives the whole story, apart from the opening scene. The intent of Motoko being cold is to maximize the climax of the story, and it works very well. Adding backstory to Motoko in the anime will not add anything to the climax - and may well derail audience attention when things get deep at the movie climax. It would be distraction. And there isn't really much to add to the movie by adding backstory. The only option which would add to the movie would be to increase tension by building a backstory which makes Motoko reluctant to accept the proposal at the climax, but again, that would detract from the purely philosophical perspective offered. There is a lot more depth and thought to the choices made in how the anime is built than I see you give credit for. I'm a bit disappointed by that, from a channel which supposedly has analysis which is worth spending time on.

Hollywood has made a ton of complex movies that twist your mind, like the Matrix series, Apocalypse Now, American Psycho, Donnie Darko, Being John Malkovich, the Sixth Sense, Shutter Island, most of Nolan, Cronenberg and Lynch's films etc. But GITS was a straightforward vanilla blockbuster adaptation and they rely on set tropes and truisms endlessly repeated. One of those tropes is that mixing biological and mechanical parts is a bad thing (how dare you evil hip replacements !!!) In Shirow's world adding tech to your body is commonly accepted. You have people who exist as a brain in a semi mobile box who can swap to humanoid bodies if needed. So translating it to the big screen in a vanilla blockbuster you're undoing decades of the same message being told over and over that cybernetics is the road to losing your soul. So they have to change the story to fit the established narrative. Look at Shirow's work, the Anime adaptation and subsequent takes. Shirow's work is filled with weird humoristic moments and cartoonish (sic) elements, the Anime goes for dead serious and goes very deep into some of the topics Shirow established and culled others. The US adaptation was a copy of the Anime, but with the ending altered to fix the expectations of blockbuster audiences. Take another Manga/Anime who touches on the subject : Gunnm or Battle Angel Alita. It would have been a very similar take if this was yet another vanilla adaptation (Oh no, you stole my humanity !) but it's helmed by James Cameron who has a wider vision than just piling up tropes and wrap them into a movie skin. (Yes there is Avatar ...) So having somebody going against the grain like a Nolan would is important to sell a high concept like GITS and not having it bastardized because of possible negative audience reactions.

Plagiarism is often said to be the most sincere form of flattery. Plagiarism is part of art history. All the paintings represent that aspect. The artist that is next in line can only hope to understand what came before and eventually put its own twist. In a way, it can show how good the original work was… aka Robocop. But the 2017’s film capturing almost none if nothing from the original manga, animated feature or the Stand-Alone Complex series make the plagiarism just a copy.

The reason there is not a character narrative for the major. Is that would distract you from the way she feels and cut away from the story. One of the themes is she is unsure if her memory is hers or something implanted. She has a life without a past or a future purpose beyond her mission. Therefore how does she know she is actually human or a construct of humanity to be a slave?

well, the climax is not the same. robocop fights and kills the guys that killed him, but you make it look like the ed209 fight was the climatic one, even though that scene comes before the swat scene. and it's Robo who kills dick jones at the end, not some other guy like in ghost in the shell. kinda a stretch there.
@underthemayo
@underthemayo 10 күн бұрын
Well the ED209 fight happens going into the final act of the film and then wraps up in the ending. It doesn't matter that robocop's fight is broken up with a showdown with other villains before the finishing the job. Both these things happen in the later part of the films and are both finished in the final moments. I don't think this is the big point you think it is. And it doesn't matter who kills the corporate boss personally. What matters is that he is killed. Shot the same way, falling back the same way. Robo shot him, and the major gives permission over a call for her boss to shoot him. So she gave the order. Shes complicit in his killing. I knew there would be ONE person saying 'ummm but she didn't shoot him, it was her boss, so it's not the same" lol

Hey wasn’t there a later anime adaptation that also made Kusanagi into some sort of super special cyborg, because she was cyberized basically straight out of the womb or something?

There's a lot to deconstruct concerning what went wrong with the live action GitS but the main thing is to remember everyone was feeding off of everything available back then in the '80s and early to mid '90s because there was so little in the way of actual cyberpunk. So.. the live action gets some slack cut for it in that regard - even though it was made 3 decades after the primary burgeoning of the genre - because it's trying to be a throwback to an era that had little for it to throwback too. Also... a copy can be fun if done right. No, what the real problem here is that the movie is just mediocre. It's not even really bad. and it's not good. It's just.. drying paint. And that's a cold hard way for GitS to be treated, it didn't deserve that.

@DavidGreen_au 3 күн бұрын
Interesting depth to the analysis. I saw live GitS as closer to Robocop, just on the basis of an organic brain in a cyborg body. In the original, the Kusanagi only has a Cyber brain, which is quite obvious as in the original Anime and Manga, she is able to be transferred to a new brain as required. Can't do that with organics. I was also amused by the presence of the dachshunds in the live version. Those dogs were only part of the Anime because Oshii always adds them to his Anime, it's like a signature, like Hitchcock doing cameos in this own films, or rain in a Ridley Scott film. I suspect that they had visions of this being an origin story for a franchise kick-start. But as it bombed badly, that is not going to happen. Or at least I hope not…

I'm not a fan of Ghost in the Shell but I'm a BIG fan of RoboCop. I watched all of the live action movies, including TV shows, excluding cartoons. I played almost all video games about RoboCop, excluding the latest one and saying all that, seen how much that Ghost in the Shell movie is copying RoboCop makes me feel bad. Like, they could have made a manga based movie but instead, hollywood been hollywood, they decided to just copy RoboCop. Sure, the basics is taken from Ghost in the Shell source material, but the structure is straight up from RoboCop. Again, I'm not a fan of Ghost in the Shell but they could have done a better movie instead of copying someone's work.

I enjoyed the 2017 movie and I am a GiTS fan I especially love the Stand Alone Complex. The changes never bothered me especially with fans of the manga disliking the animated movie and the TV series. I am also used to Americans making changes when adapting foreign IP's or various forms of media like for example the American Office being different to the UK Office or The Ring being different to Ringu I also love Robocop and would love to see a Robocop anime.

So the Movie was bad and everything you said was spot on. I will say that the live action movie seemed to draw more from the Anime "Standalone Complex" which did give Major Kusanagi more of a backstory, particularly in season 2. A lot of the major characters in the movie drew directly from season 2. As a result, I didn't even notice the Robocop parallels until you pointed them out.

As a long time GitS fan, I didn't hate it. I was surprised I didn't hate it. At first, it bothered me that I didn't hate it. Because, you know, I like to think I'm not an idiot, and I could see everything wrong with this movie. I'm not sure why I don't hate it. Don't get me wrong, I'd never watch again...well, I might if I was changing channels, it was on, and I wasn't finding anything interesting, but that's because I don't hate it. Fun fact: this is one of the movies that if you criticized it, people on social media would swarm you calling you a racist.

Thank you very much for this video. Honestly this does not quite "cut it" and I will share some of why is that. But first things first... I "underestimated you", meaning that my initial thought of comment, outside of overall gratitude, to which I will come to later, is that "Bleeding some of the other media surrounding and mostly following the Original Gits into the Scarlett Johansson movie was inevitable. And I did mean exactly Gits Stand Alone complex where her "growing up" was thoroughly explained. But you did sort of "covered that up" soon after. I think there was a "second", but I forgot it atm, so let`s "cut to the chase". Why am I so grateful? Just yesterday I were attempting to think of which one of which one of those 2 movies to rewatch... the Full Motion Picture Ghost in the Shell (the SJ one) or ~"the latest" Robocop. I just one of those movies. Thing is... I couldn`t decide... Gits is more fresh and I have re watch it at least once and I more or less remember it, even thou there certainly are a few details here and there that will still "do good" to my mind on rewatch. If anything I really do like Scarlett as an actress. My possibly top 3 with her are "The Perfect Score", "Lost in Translation" (that one is overall an incredibly up there movie according to me, not because of her only, but because of Bill Murray as well and what the film presents and depicts as well, timeless it may not be, that particular showcase, but certainly "a foot hold" in the "state of things" it was and in that sense ~is.), Also by having to "research" exactly what the name of "The Perfect Score" was I remembered "Lucy" which I cannot deny also I do like a lot as a movie and it have SJ in it. (name too long to re type every time, in case you wonder). Also one of my "fondest" memories (in case you wonder, which you don`t) is this one time when I randomly saw this girl younger than me that I somewhat know ~at least one I have had "a talk" with her in her "mature stage" (a.k.a. when she was what I acknowledge an adult), walk out of her home (seen from a large distance for my not so good eyes and wondering mind) in what I could only assume was "SJ" roleplay... in terms of (again from a very much distance and with freshly influenced by the movie mind) makeup, hair, clothing. It was like I saw Kusanagi Motoko walk out of there :P. Anyways... The latest Robocop I have seen only once (I have re watched the old ones ~a few times in VHS era and later), what I can "share" about it... is that even thou I saw it in that already "adult" stages of "development" of ~ "myself"... the scene with him being only brain and lungs was one of the top few scariest thing I have seen "on screen" :P Not that it frightens me that much visually, but the overall "concept of it". (however that is not the reason to not re see it). Overall the movie is not bad, but it really isn`t that good (according to me) and I wanted something good. I ended up with a completely no name, random anime movie (not series, movie) Which was very weird and I were distracting myself near the end too much, so it practically was a completely "wasted time"... I saw nothing of the "resolution" in terms of "why the entirety of it was". It was something about I think "mass hypnosis", but I did not quite catch "the purpose" of it if it was explained. I just understood it was the reason of why things up to that point have happened the way they did. But this clip... this clip... is like someone "read my mind"... It more or less "re reviewed" both movies on me and talked on a topic that no one can deny they "arouse" (the movies), by being themselves. That is close to all I've got... I can "peddle in" a bit more Gits trivia... There is at least a few more animated series and I am pretty sure in one of them (if it isn`t actually Stand Alone Complex) which introduces the concept of "Motoko`s main body" "packing too much heat"... Meaning too many organizations were into and ~her being destroyed. So it had some sort of tracking system set to "trigger an alarm" if it ~"boots", so she were walking around in a "slot holder" child`s body... Or I could have just imagined that... But I am pretty sure it`s both... I just do not know which one was first... (probably the animation, most of what we even thinks "we think" is a "remux" of something "imprinted" on us by something ~previous in a different form, or just highlighted enough for it to have been an actual conscious memory, so it "re emerges" as a "day dream" and we think is something that is "out original", but it`s in fact just a continuation in the "grand scheme of things". At least so I think.

the point of GITS original manga that start in 8.1989 is both Electronic and Physical brain is the same .. that you can edit or delete memory in side it or move from Electronic to Physical brain and vice versa.. that why it is also name : Stand Alone Complex , the end of the GITS show original end at Motoko merge with the New Artificial life forms on the Internet (at that time , if you read SAC 2.0 you get and idea she and that Artificial life forms is not the only one .. we got another thing)... but you need a mini version that want People to get the story in 2 hours , so .. copy RoboCOP is a good idea, hahaha.

Basically every classic hardcore anime from the mid 80s through late 90s is "inspired" by something American or European. I don"t say it with any venom either, the Japanese made unbelievable stuff, but it"s mostly all taken from Blade Runner, Judge Dredd/2000AD, Mœbius/Heavy Metal magazine, Elric of Melniboné, John Carpenter and beyond

Great video! I personally didn't like the live-action adaptation/remake of Ghost in the Shell at all. I felt like it was very shallow compared to the original and it's sequel. Aside from the fact that this movie's setting looks and feels like a generic sci-fi, while the originals were retro-futuristic ("Innocence" was even more retro-futuristic on purpose), this "remake" has no philosophical depth, no thought provoking themes, no interesting world-building... All in all, this movie feels like it "steals" all the most creative and striking imagery from the originals, without ever eraning it.

So I pitched them the idea of the opening spot of my Ghost In The Shell video since it's got the futuristic robot theme and they agreed. Worked out nicely and the ad was pretty fun to make.
