Totally 👍👍 it just sucked to watch him swap dialogue.......or fail to, even when it would substantially reduce Ethan's understandable distress 😞 Sometimes I feel that the more inflated the franchise is, the more the emphasis lands on cutscenes - which usually contain writing you 'might' be able to get away with in a short cutscene....but the longer the exchanges go on for, the more waitwhowhatthef@ck ?! moments occur. Or it's a Cringe Festival. More than once I wondered if Chris had hit his head during the gaps in separate RE's. RE4 hides its linearity with a sense of adventure. You don’t feel like you’re going through levels of a game, you feel like you are going on a wild rollercoaster ride and the Village and Castle are the backdrop. The Island is where the linearity starts to show more, but there’s enough action that you probably don’t care. RE Village doesn’t have a sense of adventure, since it goes more quiet and suspenseful route compared to RE4 but the suspenseful route works more with a choice based open-world which unfortunately it doesn’t have.
@thenonexistinghero6 ай бұрын
RE4's action and level design are also just a lot better. RE Village just has too many flaws. They could've hid treasures in many places with the shinies, but nope... there's not a whole lot of them hidden. The game has stretches where you go without encountering a new shiny spot to shoot for hours (assuming your first time through). And there's barely any weapon upgrades to find in Village, most of the extra stuff you do results in treasure you can sell. Upgrading weapons at the shop also isn't spaced out properly. You go through like half of the game without being able to upgrade any of your weapons to a new level. Those are just a few flaws, but... the game has A LOT of issues. Still a decent game overal, but both RE7 and RE8 are at the bottom of the mainline games for me. And I played through them in the best way possible, all in VR.

It's not just the fact that after being brainlessly railroaded throughout the game , the Factory suddenly remembers that Resident Evil games have exploration and puzzles , it's also the fact that it's comparatively long to the other parts of the game . They overhyped the Castle part which turns out to be rather short , the Villa and the Lake/Basin are virtually inconsequential , and then you're stuck in a massive Factory that looks like a dev's steam/dieselpunk wet dream , which turns out to be the largest portion of the game , with the hope that you might be able to make an actual choice in the game and side with Transformers Magneto , but no . There's just no sense of balance whatsoever in the game .

With how big the thing is, they could've made so many paths and hidden places for u to explore and put Megamycete under the castle in some secret place, just how FromSof placed Old Chaos under the castle of Eleum Loyce behind throne in Dark Souls 2. Correct me if I’m wrong, but personally I don’t think Resident Evil has been survival horror since RE4 first came out. Other than the remakes, every new title has been more of an action-horror game then a survival horror one. Even RE7 was extremely linear and action focused, emphasized by the shift to an FPS. This critique is legitimate in many ways, but I can’t help but disagree. I feel like Mayo wanted classic Resident Evil, and that he doesn’t care that they’ve clearly been changing the direction of the franchise for a while now. I expected an action game since that’s kinda what the new titles in the series have been since RE’s 4-7, and I really enjoyed Village even with it’s lacking difficulty and linearity. I feel like without the remakes being somewhat fresh in mind, the perception of Village would be exponentially different.
@snakeplissken71943 жыл бұрын
No it would not be different. I love RE4 but even as a kid playing it for the first time all I could say is "It's a great game, but it's not Resident Evil." Then 5 and 6 came out and sucked, 7 tried to be scary but forgot that VR jumpscares are surprising, not scary. The perception that 8 is not a great game would be kept because to those long time RE fans the survival horror gameplay was the reason we played RE in the first place and true survival horror games are practically non existent today. I have tried so many horror games that reviewers classify as "survival horror" but in reality they are simple hide n seek horror games or action games with horror elements. RE2 remake surely was a breath of fresh air but if it had never came out I can assure you long term fans would still hold this perception even more so because of the lack of true survival horror experiences.
@hikari673 жыл бұрын
My point is that there was no survial horror aspect to those games since 1. Just action games with horror skin applied to them. It was their intention since RE1, they wanted an action/FPS game from the get go, they didn't made that due to hardware limitations, the more we advance the more they finally reached this possibility, 4 was their proud evolution and unlike niche series that sold jack shit cause they never evolved (hello SILENT HILL) they managed to always keep moving forward and made a ton of money for that. RE8 is yet another evolution in the right way, the only problem being the casual level of difficulty cause in order to sell a game now you have to basically make them playable even for absolute dumbass, the Journalist dumb level. The argument "its not a RE game" is so stupid that it makes me laugh, the games are called Biohazard they're about viruses and bio chemical weapons, not about horror, not about zombies, not about solving puzzles. It's as silly as seeing people who know nothing about japanese culture and money, using Konami pachinko meme when RE had more pachinko than all Konami's franchises together. It's a Biohazard game, only way too easy to please a bigger audience.
@snakeplissken71943 жыл бұрын
@@hikari67 It makes me laugh that you say RE 1 is the only game that was survival horror. It outs hat you never played it and just read that the creative director wanted to make the series an action series. His hands were tied and they had to make 2 a survival horror game and that's exactly what 2 is. 3 has a tiny bit of action but still heavily leans in the survival horror gameplay. 4 was when he got to blow his creative load. 4 is a great game but a bad RE game. 8 is just trying to be 4 but fails to understand what made 4 so great.

Not touched the pachinkos though cause man wtf i'm not that autistic xD But still, i can say that straight to your face, none of those games are survival horror games in my opinion and yes, 4 is old, mechanicly speaking it's old af, many games surpassed it even if it was a pionner in the genre and yes 8 is better than 4 and i will keep playing 8 more than 4 for sure haha.
@howardwilfred22943 жыл бұрын
@@hikari67 "and yes 8 is better than 4 and i will keep playing 8 more than 4 for sure haha" Can you explain this then? Just take the part of the games which is most similar which is the parts near the start in which you surive waves of enemies. The way RE8's version works is explained in this video, and there is not much to it. No real way of approaching it in ways other than the one the game intends. That's it. In RE4 the enemies only become hostile once they notice you, the game encourages you to look around and think about your approach. You can try to mount a defence in the house with the shotgun, you can look through other houses and find supplies, ammo, grenades etc. The player is also punished for making certain decisions. Want to get the shotgun? Well then you have to fight a chainsaw enemy and the enemies will swarm the house from upstairs and downstairs. Want to try and escape from either side of the map? One side has a chainsaw guy waiting for you at the gate and when you turn around the rest of the villagers have flooded the narrow path. Go to the other gate and there is just a grenade which you might have to use just to escape being trapped. Want to go up the ladder in the middle and hide? Too bad, enemies start lobbing molotovs at you. That's just talking about approach and ignoring game mechanics though. Enemies will throw hatchets at you, run at you, lunge at you to grab you. Some enemies will have pitchforks and attack from a greater range etc etc and the game gives you answers to all of this situations. You can shoot an enemy projectile out of the air. If the enemy runs at you, shoot him in the legs and he will fall down. The enemies with pitchforks are easily baited into attacking you, and have a long recovery window that you can stun them in for a melee attack. You can use melee attacks to get some invincibility and clear a crowd of enemies, the list goes on. Once you have the mechanics down, then some of the punishments the game gives you for venturing into different areas start to become a reward for your good play. For example you could go get the shotgun and use your greandes and yout shotty ammo to kill the chainsaw enemy and be rewarded with a decent amount of money, but now you lost a lot of supplies and you can't encounter the chainsaw enemy at the gate, Want to do better? You can start the area by going and killing the optional chainsaw enemy by the gate with your pistol and melee attacks, maybe a grenade for good measure, now you are rearded a valuable ruby and can try to defeat the second chainsaw enemy for an even greater reward. Mastered the games mechanics? You can defeat the gate chainsaw guy with just your knife by baiting his attacks and using the instant stun in his recovery animation to knock him down with a melee attack and clear any villagers away from you. You can recieve all the possible rewards without having to use any grenades or ammo for your shotgun because you are good at the game. A reminder that RE4 is a game from the early 2000s while RE8 is a game from 2021. It would be interesting to hear your argue and justify why a game which you described as "mechanically speaking is old as fk" somehow executes a very similar scene but way better with so many more options for the player. Also thankfully for the many people who think that RE1 is a survival horror game and do infact think it was a horror game to begin with, your opinion does not matter, regardless of which person's face you are willing to say it to. The game is objectively a survival horror game and one of the best ever in terms of atmosphere and visuals.

I'm not going to hold any punches with what I'm about to say... marketing Lady Dimitrescu as a main character and major villain in trailer/gameplay, then killing her off in the beginning of the game was a grimy, pathetic, manipulation tactic. It worked splendidly for the Capcom though since everybody lost their minds over the very tall, busty, curvy, thick vampire mutant woman. She damn near broke the internet. The voice actress did a phenomenal job. Lady Dimitrescu might not of been the primary antagonist and final boss, but having a satisfying experience getting to understand her character and personality would have made her legendary, especially if we got to fight her five times like they did with Jack Backer back in Resident Evil 7. Every time you face off against her, she becomes more and more aggressive, her fighting style and powers become harder to deal with as she's slowly mutating into something worse. My biggest problem with RE8 is that even for a resident evil game it's way too silly disconnected. Like I guess Lady D kind of fits because she's like a less scary mr.X and Moreau is a pretty standard mutant guy, but like a guy with magneto powers? A girl who can bring dolls to life and a merchant that obviously can’t fit through a normal doorway but still magically teleports wherever you happen to be? Plus stylistically each level feels like it could’ve been it’s own game and kind of feels like they crammed a bunch of separate ideas together and hoped it would work. The only level that felt remotely scary was only like 10 mins of the actual game. RE7 was a far better horror game

10:30 “it’s like they think that just because it’s a horror game there can’t be music” How exactly did you reach that conclusion? No music is a completely fine artistic/design decision. Another example would be Dark Souls, most areas have no music and it’s intentional as well as effective. It’s fine if you prefer it with music but you’ve just made a weird assumption out of nowhere. I think you’re struggling to explain a lot of the points you’ve made so far. You’ve also compared this game a lot to RE1 and that’s fine, it’s what you expect from a RE title from what I understand. But if that’s the case for your review then maybe preface that before beginning the review. It feels like you’ve been explaining the sequence of events so far without explaining why you don’t like these events. Again, I assume it’s because they’re just not to your taste but if you don’t explain why in depth then the review feels hollow. The video is enjoyable so far though, well done. Also, the castle is a disappointment to me too, it feels like a lot of missed potential in terms of maze-like exploration. The atmosphere I think was great though. That rooftop part was one of the highlights for me, very atmospheric and immersive. Another example where no music is good: having BGM there would ruin the mood I think. Just having the crow caws and the fog was perfect
@nothing30653 жыл бұрын
DOOM Eternal has music in every level.
@gabrielantoniocontreras55843 жыл бұрын
If you listened and pay attention for 2 more minutes you would get a compelling answer as to why the decision of -no music at all- could be considered a missed opportunity (or in my opinion: a bad decision altogether) (in contrast, in previous iterations -that had music in the background-) 11:26 "(...)sometimes all music would be absent, creating a very eerie feeling that could be capitalized on by a good scare(...)" and 11:54 "now that -eerie feeling- of no music is in the whole game, so there is nothing special about it. It loses all meaning and get numb to it" (and again, in my opinion, if that specific rooftop scene had the contrast of having NO BGM, the "atmosphere" would have been the same or even better with the overall game having music in the background. And even if they had designed THAT scene with a BGM you would always have the option to correct that decision by turning music volume off.) (In contrast, people like me have no option at all regarding ambience)

My biggest problem with Village wasn't that it was necessarily awful or anything like that, it just plays way to similar RE4. Even the areas are same-ish with the village, lake-swamp area, castle, abandoned military industrial complex. It felt more like an update than a new game, and then playing the RE4 remake kinda just brought it all up again. I also didn't appreciate that while aside from the boss fights in RE7 (which are over the top cheesy aside from the Mom), RE7 felt much more like a return to the original series of being closer to the OG games and then they just went full RE4, RE5, RE6 mode for RE8.

I don't think it is absolute dog shit, but it feels just a tad bit too different from RE7. It seems that this is the cycle of life in RE series. Roughly speaking. 1. Restrained survival horror, that is good but doesn't have very wide appeal. 2. A more action focused survival horror that has more wide appeal. 3. A super ridiculous schlocky action, that crosses the line and doesn't appeal to survival horror fans at all. Then we hit reset and restart cycle. You can spot this both in games of the series and even within one game.

True horror is hard to sustain, there's a reason that the best horror games are either one-offs, or continually cycle in new protagonists. Once things get too familiar, the shock and fear gradually goes away, the first time you see a zombie, it's scary as hell, the hundredth time, not so much. Why I always believed that RE is best as an action horror hybrid, coz you can expand the narrative and also continue character storylines and still make it interesting. A horror game only works perfectly imo, the first time you play it, after that it just becomes a game. It's not a sustainable genre for a long running series.

It felt too easy, does it feel like horror when you have 50 shotgun shells, over a 100 bullets and around 15 rounds for your grenade launcher when you end on your first playthrough. Part of horror is feeling helpless. I felt like Arnold in an 80:ies movie.

The Dollhouse is AAA Amnesia. The swamp is more sliding through cracks in the wall than it is actually shooting things.
@packardcaribien3 жыл бұрын
You forgot the cyborg factory, which is a slog. I don't mind the length per se, but the best parts were in the castle and dollhouse. The game got bland after that.... Could've been much better if the castle was longer and some of the other bits trimmed or even cut.
@PinkManGuy3 жыл бұрын
@@packardcaribien I really liked the cyborg factory. It had some of the best atmosphere in the game and the level design (aside from segmenting it all with an elevator) was stunning. I hated the Dollhouse, it literally just felt like I could go play any indie horror title from 2011 and get the same thing. It was essentially Amnesia the Dark Descent but with higher production values. The baby was scary the first time I played it, and the first time I speedrun the game. After that, it will ALWAYS play out EXACTLY the same way regardless of player input.
@charlesmartiniii14053 жыл бұрын
I dont think the baby section was meant for multiple playthroughs nor speedrunners. Its a one of a kind scare that will always stick out in my mind.
@PinkManGuy3 жыл бұрын
@@charlesmartiniii1405 The game withholds a difficulty setting behind a second playthrough, though! They could have added just a tiny bit of variability or something, ANYTHING to make it different, and they don't! You know what? I take back what I said. Amnesia is better than the Dollhouse. I think you would like Amnesia the Dark Descent (the first one, other two are kinda poopy) and Visage if you like that kind of gameplay. I personally don't, but those two games are pretty fun and make much better use of that kind of gameplay. They actually vary things up quite a bit and keep you on your toes at all times. Amnesia kinda runs like garbage on newer hardware though...
@Neo2266.3 жыл бұрын
Dollhouse is AAA Amnesia? Are you isnane? The Dollhouse is Outlast with a code of paint, basic gameplay, almost no AI, barely any story. Comparing the Dollhouse to Amnesia is insulting

I'm confused as to why you didnt talk more about how much exploration you can do in the village after you beat moreau, theres the boat you can take, the pack leader at luiza's house, the two giant bosses, checking out the loot from the cranks, etc. If its not done already play on Village of shadows in a brand new save file without using any NG+ stuff. There is way more decision making regarding combat. For example in the castle; you could kill some of the flying bats since they drop around 5k each and profit from it, but have less ammo for the boss fight since merchant only sells a limited amount of ammo.

Most of the exploration after moreau is usually treasure, and not items that affect progression like the valve he mentions in RE2 remake.
@wolfiechan66763 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly! This completely debunk his opinion about the “linear” experience throughout the game, where “one key can only open one door”, when in fact there are so much exploration that you could do in the game, and even some of the keys could open several doors.
@thermonuclearcollider44183 жыл бұрын
Because none of that stuff is actually essential to move forward in the game: he made it clear early on when he said the main game is linear, all the exploration is to pick up extra goodies...which is true. I only stumbled upon the alpha werewolf during my first playthrough because the map insisted I still had to the explore Luiza's house (even though I had already checked it before and retrieved the grenades and the pendant with the key) and I completely missed the two giants - I only got to them on my second time because I realized I hadn't checked everywhere. But you can finish the game without bothering with most of what Village has to offer - which is the opposite of real RE games, where you have to explore every inch of the locations to move forward. RE2make did that wonderfully. The only exception was the hidden elevator in the sewers which allowed you to go back to the RPD and retrieve a bunch of stuff you couldn't get before - you don't really need that to make it through the game, even though it's impossible to miss. And OG RE2 had something similar with the hidden stairs in the sewers, which would take you to warehouses where you could pick up extra items.

Bloodborne is unironically a better Resident Evil game than Resident Evil 8. Way scarier, much more open ended level design, better boss battles, and better atmosphere as well. That's hilarious. Also, anyone notice how similar Heisenberg is to Father Gascoinge?

@Hindenburg Dude, I am like the biggest Bloodborne fan on the planet. It is tied for my second favourite game of all time, with the DLC sitting as straight up my favourite video game content of all time. I know about the lore of the Fishing Hamlet, Lady Maria and Gehrman, Byrgenwerth, the Choir, all that shit. Don't tell me I don't know shit about Bloodborne. I'm also not American, I'm afraid it's even worse than that. I'm British. I know what English is pretty damn well. My point was that Resident Evil has always been great for: Fantastic, open ended level design with multiple paths to choose from, many different disturbing and creepy enemy types, dense atmosphere, and excellent horror. Bloodborne excels at all of these things. So I stand by what I said And it pulls off the Gothic horror stuff way better, even though it slowly transforms into Gothic horror in the later sections.

The game also somehow does the NG+ rewards backwards. You get the STAKE-Magnum just for breezing through, even on easy. I guess the revolver that uses sniper ammo instead of magnum would have been nice if you didn't already have access to infinite ammo, but the assault rifle and that anemic firecracker-pistol are quite useless aside from using them because you have them. And surprisingly enough, Heisenberg's bossfight is the hardest in "Village of Shadows"-difficulty because you can't just blast him and there's no room for error as he kills you in like three hits. Such a jarring contrast as he was a complete pushover on any other difficulty.
