Note that on top of this John originally had a roommate whose name was Lyman. Lyman was Odie’s owner. However mysteriously Lyman just disappeared from the comic. John may have much deeper issues than we ever directly knew about.

But he had to have been designed and created at least 3 months before this, as Jim Davis had to make each strip, and send it to newspapers 7 weeks in advance before it was actually printed. This is why comics in the newspaper back then were never political, because it was too difficult for the newspapers around the world to be able to print everything on schedule on the same day. Also, Garfield never touched on political or cultural issues because Davis admitted that he didn't understand those concepts very well, as he explains, "I never understood politics. For many years, I thought OPEC was a denture adhesive." Davis has never revealed the actual date he created Garfield, so he uses the original newspaper print date as his official birthday, which is always easy to verify with printed proof. Garfield was a cat because on the fact that Jim Davis grew up on a farm in Muncie Indiana, and they had about 25 cats, and Davis said that there were already too many dogs in the comics, like Snoopy and Marmaduke, among many others. Also, his grandfather was named James Abram Garfield Davis (who in turn was named after the president when he was born), who was a fat, cynical, lazy man. Garfield's birth weight was 5 lbs 6 oz, which was the same birth weight of Jim Davis' son. I've been a huge Garfield fan since I was a young child, and I had the very rare "Garfield's Trivia Book," That's how I know these facts. People do it all the time in real life, sadly.. when I first started working in vet med, this woman brought in a yellow lab that was 200 lbs. I literally could not wrap my arms around this dog’s neck to restrain him properly. vet talked to her about a diet, purely out of concern for her dog, who couldn’t even stay standing, he had to either walk or lay down, no in between. The owner was totally dismissive, claimed her dog is supposed to be bigger because he’s an English lab(which he most definitely was not an English lab) and then on her way out of the clinic, turned to me and said “he’s going to be very happy when we get home tonight! Every Friday I order a pizza, I eat 2 slices and he gets the rest!” Meanwhile, it was Sunday, so lady is out of her mind on multiple levels. I said “oh wow! That’s really unhealthy for him!” And this lady just laughs and walks away. Some people get a kick out of how unhealthy their pets are and refuse to believe that it’s their own fault…

It's funny because this is the most realistic cat-owner relationship I've seen. Cats don't "MAKE their own rules"! You let your imagination do the work and figure out what they're trying to tell you and overfeed them! There is no "Oh but he NEEDS it" no. He needs to live a healthy life. My dad never listens to ANYONE though and our cats overeat and throw up everyday. One of them is so fat she looks like a bowling ball with fur. Not like I can throw him out of the house though.
