I wish the same man. But it was a different time back in the early 2010’s. Cost of material have gone up almost twice as high. Business wise I understand why Takara has raised their prices over the years, but it doesn’t excuse the terrible QC issues as of late for most of the MP releases.

I think it's a testament to how good MP-13 was and still is, that it can hold it's own against a more modern release. I still think it's one of the best, if not the best, MP's that Takara have ever released. That being said, I still bought Acoustic Wave :)

A lot of what Bobby likes about MP-13 over RP-01 is the opposite for me. I like that it looks toon but still different enough to be its own thing, and to fit in better with the rest. MP-13 looks great overall, as a standalone and in a collection...but it sticks out now. There's too much additional detailing to be reminiscent of the cartoon or even most reference arts of him, and there are parts of him that look too clunky. The only way I can describe this is if you had a Justice League team, but put a more armored up Batman in with the mix. It looks awesome, but you can see it's going to be an outlier. I love MP-13 and still cherish it, but I've been waiting on an updated figure that fits more with how I remember Soundwave, and that's really what it boils down to. It's a subjective matter.

I believe that everyone speaking up about preference for MP13 over RP01 likes MP13 more for how they prefer their bots, vs how they remember them. Me, I want bots that match their on-screen counterparts to the tee. They also match the use of die cast to a tee, which is what Fanstoys I believe is going for. I do not think Fanstoys is making these near 100% toon accurate representations for people that prefer MP13 over RP01.

It's always a preference thing in the end, but the debates get way too heated as if people can't enjoy the both of them, and accept that MP-13 is going to be replaced with RP-01 for their shelves. It's the way that I prefer it too and glad that they've made it because there's been no attempts to update it for years. And you are right, FT has a type of look they're going for, and it is for those who prefer that.

The darker shade of blue and the black chest shield of the Takara definitely gives it a "sexier" and more stylish look. I still have Acoustic Wave on order but I agree that MP-13 is going to be tough to beat. I still think Fanstoys should have done Blaster instead.

I think MP-13 is a timeless design. Its only flaw is its weird hips. Laserbeak is perfect, the look is perfect - like you said, it looks like what Soundwave would look like if he was real. It's the first Masterpiece figure I bought, the figure that got me into collecting, and I've been chasing that same sense of "wow" ever since and not gotten it from any of the dozens of other figures I've bought (except, maybe, Stomp). If I ever get out of collecting, MP-13 will be the last one still in my collection. When I have company and they ask about my figures, it's the one I show off. It's the one I'm comfortable flipping back and forth, it has the coolest features with the tapes, it looks awesome and imposing in robot mode. Masterpiece lines, both official and third party, are going the wrong direction if they ever want to top MP-13.

There's one gimmick that Takara has that we won't know if FT/RP can reproduce until the rest of their tapes come out. That clear plastic tab on TK's forearm plugs into Lazerbeak and Buzzsaw's feet, allowing them to perch there. Is there anything on AW that looks like it could be a tab or slot for their version?

I saw on the forearms that there is a tab in the middle where it looks like the condors can perch onto. Looking at the promo pics they released, I'm betting it's 100% possible. And it looks like on the shoulders, there's a tab that sticks out from the part that connects the shoulder to the torso. That could be a possible perch tab, too. I will have to confirm if the TT condors can be plugged in those tabs as well.

Its hard to compare the cost though. If that Takara came out in this time it would probably cost as much or more than the Fans Toys. Good overall battle though. Takara soundwave was definitely one of my favorite releases from Takara.

Perhaps, but then you forget Hasbro wanted a piece of the cake and had a short span of their own repackaged MPs with Soundwave being even cheaper than Takara together with all the tapes. The only difference between the 2 was Hasbros version had yellow eyes. Other than that they were identical, I had both a while and I really tried to find more differences than that but there were none.

I love my MP-13 and I don't think I'll be picking this up even though I think it look pretty sweet. But I have to say kudos to FT for making his weapons fit the battery compartment like the original G1 toy. I really hate the back of the alt mode for the Takara just because of that.

For me it is a knock out for Acoustic Wave. The face sculpt on the Takara is just not right, I notice you say you prefer the look of the Takara but not that it looks more like Soundwave and this is where opinion comes in. Also I think your argument about not using the detail pieces and then knocking it for the detail is not correct. That's precisely why those pieces are included so you can get the look you're after regardless of the stock configuration. I think FT/RP should have added extra detail to the buttons in alt mode, it's odd they didn't. Interesting to see your views as always!

RPs head ain't much better than Takara. It looks great from the front, but the side it's just too flat. Takara almost got it despite the changes to the head but RP decided to go the completely wrong way and made the head more rectangular than squared with the mouth guard giving some roundness,the result being a placeholder until someone makes a better head or Takara tries for a V2. Another thing that RP should get flack about is the choice of tape, who the F will settle with just FirRib when the main tape is Laserbeak? There's no reason to do that, most fans will buy the 2nd set too, the only question is if all of them will be able to. Such a dick move

Takara winning doesn’t speak badly of Fans Toys, it highlights how good MP13 was and still is. Can you imagine Takara doing a 2.0 and it being well received or even improved? To FT’s credit, I think Acoustic Waves design is ancient in spite of only recently being released. Sure they may have tweaked some parts of it, but we all know it was intended as the companies 2nd ever release. Essentially we have peak Takara vs still a rookie FT.

If my memory is correct, Takara announced the official MP at some point after FT’s reveal. Would have been suicide back then for FT to produce their product alongside the official product.

They may have tweaked some aesthetics, but it would have been financially crazy to make drastic changes or redesign the thing from the ground up. Total speculation on my part, but I think part of the reason they didn’t release the figure under their own banner was because it was a dated unit not totally in line with their current releases. Old figure with a mild facelift.

The only problem I have with Takara Soundwave is that as of 2021 he is impossible to find for a price that isn't insane. The Fanstoys and Takara are the same price most places and in some places the Takara is even more. Just... yikes.

The old takara figure color is so dark one should have it in black. Then have the FT version with the G1 toon Blue as the real soundwave since it is the one that looks the part that I remember. Most fans memories I think are that of the toon and not the toy version blue. The head being bigger on it makes it easier to see and enjoy. That takara head is too small to appreciate and its red visible looks dead. However, I do like how takara had the face more visible on the side which matters to me. I do like the chrome gold on takara better and I feel like that's the only other part that's better.

Great final point... With the gap of time between both companies' releases, there's no reason that FT shouldn't have crushed the Takara. It's just like FT Hotrod in that regard. The arms and legs look better on FT. The kibble on the legs of Takara shows its old engineering. It reminds me of the too much kibble on the make toys starscream compare to the crimson starscream.

True that. And the MT Starscream was sleek compared to MP-11. It's all about acknowledging the things that newer figures do right, and in this case AW fixes a lot of MP-13's outdated looks.

On my G1 Decepticon shelf now are: Soundwave (MP-13) Shockwave (aka Lavenderwave) Megatron (MP-36) The Takara tapes ...and soon Starscream & Thundercracker (MP-52 molds) Having a FT Soundwave would, imho, make him stick out on a shelf of figures all from the same company. Plus MP-13 was my first Masterpiece figure when I started collecting 2 years ago.

Robot Paradise for bot mode. 🤔 Alt mode definitely prefer Takara's, but this is one particular case on which I really don't care for the alt mode (I never was a big fan of mass shifting 😁). Where’s Quakewave. Size comparison. Acoustic to me looks better with the bits on. Both of them stay just in different shelves. Tak goes with Apollyon G1 shelf. AW goes with sovereign in my movie headmaster shelf.

Thanks bobby! This is a tough one and I really appreciate your honesty and objectivity. I hope you don't lose your defander card over this. I think you nailed every evaluation here except the knee articulation. Mind you I own neither so I can't say first hand but can only say based on what you are showing in your video. The Takara seems to bend closer to 180 degrees while the fanstoys seems to get to 135ish degrees. Now, do you need all that bend? are you going to have your soundwave kneeling or doing a muy-thai rising knee or something? I dunno, but the takara knees seem to let you do that... maybe? I dunno, would love to see other perspectives on that :)

As someone who owns both and plans on keeping both, all I can say is that they are both great depending on what you are looking for. I like "toon accurate" sculpt and paint for my MP collection but I definitely see the appeal for all the small details that get left off the simple cartoon design. Also, I got DS-01 Starscream and KFC Opticlones which are both slightly bigger than other MP offerings so FT Soundwave actually works with my other Decepticons really well. Regardless, I'm still keeping my Takara even if it is for just the alt mode.

I think this is a good example why toon accuracy is not always good. Yes, it's more accurate to the cartoon, but these missing details, if added to the cartoon, would make it look much better. To me, some toon accuracy is like buying those big chunky TV when we can have fancy ones now. The modern ones serve the purpose and are much better. Also, when you demonstrate the TT thigh joint, front and back kick is supposed to use that ratchet built partially into the upper thigh, which won't require the button flap being lifted for full range. Despite that, I would give the articulation to FT, simply because that joint on TT is well-known for breaking itself over time and requires mods for it to function properly, and to me, that's a deal breaker.

To this day, Takara's tapes are absolutely masterpieces. While the MMC in bot mode work for a Masterpiece collection, the Takara tapes work across the board, like in my Classics collection. I don't have a horse in this race but I always wanted the Takara Soundwave even though I'm not an MP guy. I still feel that way, that FT is just too plain.

I cannot wait to get mine in the mail.. and to resign my Takara Soundwave to alt mode.

I agree that Laserbeak would have been better, but AW coming with Frenzy is a reference to the Micro Change release of the original toy, which came with what would become Frenzy. Micro Change Laserbeak, Ravage, and Rumble all came separately and later as a 3 pack.

If that's the case they should have gone with Buzzsaw instead, since 1st Soundwave did that. Would make more sense and those that won't be able to get the other tapes at least will have 1 of the birds.

the Takara just looks more like a "toy" if that makes sense, FT looks like a premium collectors item, feels like it too, very solid.

Glad I have both as both are great. I personally prefer Acoustic wave as I prefer the toon look. The only real issue I have with AW is the gold chrome on the chest, wish they had used the same yellow as on the legs.

Maybe i'm biased here towards Soundwave as a character (my fav Decepticon), but i really love both figures equally in all departments and i don't see it as bad thing. MP-13 have always been peak Masterpiece Transformers to me so it isn't easy to top that.

I am really unsure who this toy is for. The Soundwave we already had is amazing, the number of KO options means anyone who wants one can have one cheaply and quickly, so why make something if it isn't going to be far superior? People will say they have been working on this for so many years and needed to get it out to recoup costs on design but why even get past the design phase? They must have knows it wasn't ever going to be all that much better very quickly so why not cut losses and move on to other figures? I would prefer to see their take on Blaster over this

It’s funny, I know that people really like MP-13, but I wanted him either painted and altered immediately or replaced. He’s a good figure, but just didn’t do it for me and I’m glad he’s being replaced. The cell-shaded chest window decal from ToyHax though did help however.

I honestly don't understand how you can say "well the FT can be displayed with the same details but I'm not gonna count those because it's a gimmick so Takara wins this category." Wouldn't it make more sense to kit out the FT in the way you thought looked best and THEN compare them? It's not an aftermarket mod kit or anything... it's what it comes with in the box, it IS the toy "as it is." Like, if it had shipped with the toy deco installed and the toon deco as the 'extra parts', it seems to me it would have scored higher, and that's weird to me. I still enjoyed it though, like all your content. :)

Maybe it was just me, but transforming the FansToys actually left me winded. Transforming a figure has never exhausted me before. There were just so many instances of parts resisting such simple movements-so frustrating. Also no matter what I tried, I could never get the panel with the buttons to close all the way down for the alt mode. I pushed on it on and off throughout the day and made zero progress getting it to move down. My fingertips felt absolutely shredded from the experience. The best part was when the figure finally broke, and I tossed it in the garbage.

So one of the gimmicks that I don't hear you talk about is how many tapes the figure can hold in their chest. I know the Takara one can hold 3, but how many can the FansToys one hold? Also do the Takara tapes fit in the Fanstoys version and vice versa? Good review and I was surprised to see that Takara held their own.

I bought the Fans Toys tapes including their Frenzy someone was selling on eBay. The Fans Toys tapes fit in MP-13.
