The reason for the reluctancy at first was probably because they wanted to confirm he was actually abandoned. They didn’t want to approach him and risk getting into a confrontation with another nearby group if he wasn’t. Once he displayed his respect and looked away from the alpha, they knew he was alone. It’s not uncommon for gorilla families to adopt baby gorillas that were left behind. Silverbacks are a very close knit species. The reason they take in newcomers is because they have a strength in numbers mentality. Babies are more likely to be accepted than older lone gorillas since they’re not seen as a viable threat. (I’m an animal behaviorist at the university of Washington)

Almost seems like they were more interested on experimenting on the real gorillas, like to see if they could get the real gorillas to accept the robot, which is kind of creepy af when you realise that they are doing this with multiple different species of primates which is our closest relative in the animal kingdom. Also in an experiment like this it would also be good to note if it messed with the gorillas, like long-term psychological impacts or sudden changes in behaviour such as paranoia or some form of PTSD for the little gorilla dude. This is not the way to conduct experiments. These videos reek of bad vibes. I reckon they're testing camouflage for the robots so they can perfect blending in with any species they want, which if you look at the robots nowadays they are getting extremely human-like in appearance, mobility and communication. Then there is video games on the internet which could potentially be helping to train these things. Play the new star wars battlefront II on the Naboo map as the droids or against the droids and you will see what I mean.
