Yeah if they had fought SMIDSY they might've had a chance to have a Famous victory over a Seeded robot I believe.

I imagine Mentorn probably gave SMIDSY the fight against Mean Streak hoping to see MS ripped to bits for ratings. SMIDSY had discs and the plan of pushing into the House Robots so it probably made for a better idea to have utter carnage. Guess it didn't work out that way.

They applied for it multiple times, but were turned down. If you watch Techno Games though, they enter their earlier machine Hell Bound in two series, before the current Hell Bent you see here is in the 2003 series.
@oliverprice1146 жыл бұрын
According to the Robot Wars Wiki, an earlier version of Hellbent which had a very different design, failed to qualify for Series 4 despite winning its battle. This version of Hellbent was originally supposed to enter Series 5, and later Series 6, but wasn't ready each time. I think that's a shame, given how good it looked in Round 1.
You need some fodder in the wars, not every robot can be a decent machine

It would probably have done better had it not come up against Chaos 2 (twice) in Series 4 and Hypnodisc in Series 5, I mean, those are robots as tough as they come, had they not met those, I think they could have had a reasonable shot at the semis in those series aswell. Taking nothing away from its performance here though, it is most definitely at its best in Series 7

I always wanted the house robots to fight each other. Shunt Vs. Dead Metal, Matilda vs. Srgt. Bash, Growler vs. CC(lol), Sir Killalot vs. Mr. Phyco. In a Turny style show. Pretty sure Phyco would win simply because of his huge claw, or Matilda with the flywheel, still would of loved to see it.

@jds3554 жыл бұрын
I imagine Matilda's flywheel would make a mess of the exposed hydraulics and electronics of Psycho and Killalot. Bash wouldn't fare much better, Growlers speed would probably cause a significant amount of shock damage, Cassius Chrome wouldn't be much of a threat, Shunt could be a danger as long as it stays upright and Dead Metal would probably not be large or strong enough to grab another house robot. Matilda, Growler and Shunt would probably be the most potent. Psycho would probably tip over trying to lift a 200kg+ robot off its wheels, Bash might be able to damage the guts of Killalot and Psycho but it wouldn't last long against anything faster.

For some reason I'm convinced Cygnus has appeared in series before, but apparently only as a featherweight in this season. Hmm. Also dropping the TV has to have a risk of filling the insides with shards of glass right? I wouldn't like to be the team that's got to go into the machine with all those rattling around inside afterwards. Spoiler alert - Cygnus X-1 is the only robot Atomic doesn't defeat with an OOTA. It's easy to mock Terror Turtle but at the same time, it's kinda a noble endeavour to make robots out of recycled material. If anything it should be encouraged for a lower cost category - the amount of scrap that roboteering produces means anyone willing to make use out of all of that is very respectable. Only problem then is how you can stop people 'finding' E-teks in the rubbish. And lets' be honest, considering how many robots do one hit and just die, the fact that TT would be ready to go if they put it back in the ring means you can't rate it at worse than average. Hell Bent impresses in the second group battle but it doesn't really face any actual competition. Two lacklustre spinners with pathetic armour, and I-Bot-One-Beta was probably the other one to watch, but that slam into the arena wall knocked them down. I had doubts about whether two 10kg spinning bars were really worth it compared to one 20kg one, though if it was in the arena with anything it could have damaged it would be those two. Diotior is always going to be a hard act to follow for any Irish robot but TopBot did a lot better than I thought it would. Considering they entered Monad in S5, which is my contender for worst robot of the series, that spinner was at least as powerful as Typhoon 2 to break the arena - we've just seen four that I doubt could have even scratched it. JP's claim that TopBot was immobile I think is wrong - Crushtacean just realised what a threat they faced and did the Control Bot style perfected after the pit release was added. SMIDSY is a robot I have some relevance to considering I'm on Team ACE who own it - even if the foster owners are up in Yorkshire. The two discs you see on the back are made to the exact same specifications and are interchangeable with High-5, Up Vote and Mr Emoji. When Dave restored SMIDSY after buying it off Gary Cairns, he sought out exact replacements and ended up machining the disc to the exact specifications. I think we even have one of the original discs that he tracked down to get the sizes, with bits of Atomic still on the tips. Might have to put it up on Team Toon's charity auction some time! It didn't look like they did a lot to Mean Streak though, and in fact had trouble finishing it off. I assume the producers put SMIDSY with Mean Streak for some destruction, but whoops. Not that Mean Streak was a threat to SMIDSY in any way, shape or form of course. I was still on the fence whether Atomic was a top tier flipper - I'd usually put it in my B-grade when thinking about S7, but I think I need to correct that - it's definitely A grade. Maybe not A+, but that flipper is powerful, well designed, effective, and the driving is top notch as well. Atomic had two draws in S4 and 5 against top tier robots and they've learned from experience. Definitely worthy semi-finalists, even if they had a weak-ish heat. A pair of fights that comes to mind are the two times Chaos 2 fought Tornado in Extreme 1. The simple box shape versus the flipper was technically all in favour for the flipper, especially with the level of ground clearance of both members of the Four Wheeled Warriors. Atomic didn't just win because it was well driven, but because it was well designed. That huge plough flipper means that it's the whole of the front that's a no-go zone, and the heavy armour it's put on means those discs are useless against it. SMIDSY might have stood a chance against a slightly less well driven and built flipper like Grim Reaper or Raging Reality, and perhaps even against a good flipper with design faults like Gravity. But they did their best and that's all we can ask.

I always loved Crustacean, it looked very well designed, the curved shell was pretty strong against axes and the pincers were perfect control weapons (even though they offer no real way to do damage how they're powered by some car jacks), but the driving was mostly garbage (nice exception here though) and they had that power glove setup that never looked like it worked properly.

@233Deadman4 жыл бұрын
@@TPH250290 if there was no point having a flipper in the reboot, how is that 2 of the 3 champions from it were flippers? Maybe the way the walls were simply encouraged more skill and better designs for flippers. Besides, all UK heavyweight events now limit the areas an OOTA can be scored, simply because the live shows needed to keep things interesting, and low walls all the way around were leading to every fight being over in less than 10 seconds with the advances making flippers more and more powerful.

@@233Deadman It makes me laugh that the entanglement device rule was overturned in the wake of Carbide winning Series 9. Are robot wars has dropped plenty of washing machines but I want to see them drop an anvil
@bami23 жыл бұрын
A washing machine is like 30-40kg, from the height being dropped it's about the same kinetic impact as a 100kg robot being launched into the air by the floor flipper and crashing down since the chassis absorbs a lot of the energy. An anvil however has very little to give and is way denser than a robot, dropping it from the same height would probably just destroy the arena floor. Remember it's very simple metal paneling with a wood top in these series and all damage had to be repaired by the crew so they just didn't want any additional and unnecessary work: they even shouted at the shunt operator after the axe was improved because every miss would pepper the top of the arena floor and they had to repair bits after each match.
