Aren't servos very sloppy, ie, not very accurate, and position degrades over time because it's using a potentiometer for position which wears out, also some servos can be fairly weak so it probably can't lift much? Should have used steppers or even geared steppers is my thought.
@miguelmaylle79632 ай бұрын
Excelente aporte compañero. Tienes razon.

At the end of the year I plan to make one with stepper motors, they are much better as you say and for semi-industrial or industrial use.
@kylewellman4022 ай бұрын
Depends on the quality like anything else. I can say, industrial robot arms such as Fanuc, Kuka, Motoman, etc. all use servo motors to control their movements. The reason these are used over stepper motors is for the positional control feedback. Traditional stepper motors are told what to do, and they do the movement. If something is in the way and they physically do not complete the movement, the controller is none the wiser and assumes its in position. This can lead to crashes if you are trying to maneuver around obstacles. Servo motors have positional feedback, so if they run into something or can't complete a movement, the controller knows exactly where the position is currently and will keep pushing to finish the movement or fault out. This is the basic difference between open loop and closed loop. Now today, there are stepper motors with closed loop control, meaning they also have positional feedback. As to the torque values of a stepper over a servo, id have to do some research on the topic, but i do also know servos are chosen for CNC machines and other motion control systems because they tend to allow for upscaling more easily and provide more power and torque. Again, i would have to do some research as I've not looked into this recently. I think at the small scale, you are correct that steppers would provide more overall torque and power, but closed loop steppers come with a hefty price tag. My information there might also be outdated and costs could have come down.
@swirlingbrain2 ай бұрын
@@kylewellman402 You either have figured it out or almost have. Little hobby servos like those used in RC cars have vastly different specs than industrial arm servos. Hobby servos is what's seen on this DIY arm, which, don't have reproducible accurate positioning and worse the potentiometer used for positioning wears out rather quickly making it even less positionally accurate. You'd know that if you've played with the hobby servos much and tried to accurately reproduce positions. Often first timers will make a plotter with servos only to find out their drawings start getting really distorted over time. That's why little DIY arms and DIY plotters don't use hobby servos long and often switch to using nema17 steppers (like in a 3d printer) instead because they can have very accurate steps and have decent torque power. However for positioning they still sometimes need a bumper switch or optical sensor to determine a starting point.
@kylewellman4022 ай бұрын
@@swirlingbrain yeah i can see that. Last time i was at a tech store picking up supplies for a few projects, I had those little servos in my hand and chose to go with standard DC motors and gear motors and a motor controller HAT as i could tell those little servos probably do not have the power to do what i wanted long term. I havent messed with them to know about the potentiometer problem, but if that's their biggest downfall, couldnt one replace the potentiometer with a higher quality one of the same resistance range? I mean yes, Nema 17s are going to be far superior in power to those tiny servos.. i suppose like everything else, pair your project with components that will fill the needs. Heck you can turn any DC motor into a servo by adding a motor controller and positional feedback ability (which is what i did for my 3 yr olds RC excavator project). Everything comes with specs. I guess the main point i was trying to point out is a robot arm (which was what this project was for) normally needs to know exactly where its at in ordrr to have repeatable accurate control. Traditional stepper motors like the nema 17s do not have a positional feedback so if for whatever reason they lose steps, their positions will start to be off and the controller wont know it where as it does with servos and the positional feedback.
