They never died instead they went to a farm, aquarium, aviary (depending on the pet). For kids who had small critters like hamsters, goldfish or budgies, this was only after the parents had scrambled to find an identical replacement.....yes, it was tough even with goldfish, kids know their pets REALLY well.
