One of the most romantic songs ever. One of my favourite of Ian. For the record, I wrote a short novel (in French), inspired by this song (and I won a price). Obviously, I quoted Jethro Tull in the beginning. "... 'came a thousand miles, just to catch you while you're smiling"... This few words move me for at least 30 years now !

Agreed! I weep (literally) when I witness Ian being unable to attain the notes that made his music such an indelible part of our melodic upbringing. My only hope is that he feels the same level of joy now as he did for decades while delivering such gems as Reasons For Waiting to ravenous, ever loyal fans whose hearts, minds and memories are able to bridge the gaps and keep the music alive, despite father time. Thank you Ian. Loved you then, love you now.

As someone in his sixties who still sings in a choir (and plays the flute!) it does get more difficult and its the high notes that get you. I personally think Ian Anderson should adapt by using guest singers who still have the range necessary and he should should find a comfortable range where he can still operate for the rest, plus his flute of course. This is not a criticism as I have loved his work from the very beginning, its a practical suggestion to a practical problem. There is nothing worse than having to wince when it should not be necessary. The oldest member of our choir is over 80 and we can still find something he can sing effectively, however limited it may be. I saw a very elderly Welsh Male Voice choir sing a few weeks back. They were magnificent, knew their limits and as a result gave a good confident performance.

Listening to a ~2017 performance, I agree. Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. These are not high-pitched lines. Brian Wilson no longer has the gorgeous falsetto range, and he uses women to cover. Really, not being high, he couldn’t bring down pitch enough to accommodate; and it might be tough re-learning stylish fingerings. He’d be better getting a sympatico vocalist, singing as possible, playing/grunting as always. Heck, growling may have trashed his voice. He has always given 125% to all performances. Get another singer. Is he still performing in this COVID era?

Absolutely love Jethro Tull. He is one of the most talented musicians on the planet. Sad to see his voice so jacked. I played some flute for a short period of time. It puts a lot of back pressure on your throat. My throat would get tired after one flute song and singing. This guy does concerts and for 30 + years. Most people don't understand how hard this guy has worked his voice over from singing and flute.

I've always loved this song and have been listening to it for 50 years now. I feel for all rock singers' vocal cords. They must suffer all sorts of maladies whilst trying to compete with high volumes and weak microphones. Also, there is so little tolerance of the baritone voice in the pop/rock world and all strive to be tenors. It's too much strain for any muscle. The ones who can still power it out, in middle and older age are in the tiny minority.

A tenor who lasts that long is mostly lucky. Paul McCartney was born with pretty good longevity, in addition to his astonishing gifts.

Maybe they should tune down a half or whole step....might make it easier for him to sing....it's pretty obvious he can't hit the higher notes anymore...and he doesn't seem to want to go all instrumental, or to have someone else as the full time vocalist (leaving him to continue playing flute/acoustic guitar/etc without having to worry about the vocals)

William Gordon: There's no comparison. I don't know if you saw Tull in the early 70s. If not, check out a KZbin video. During that time period, he had a great voice and there was and still is no better showman than he was. I keep hearing about Freddy Mercury is the greatest showman. Whoever said that never saw Ian Anderson.

I've loved Jethro Tull since 1969. Ian needs to hire a singer because he can't sing anymore. He should just concentrate on playing flute, which he's still a master of. I don't know if he's still playing guitar, and if he is, I'm sure he's still great at that also. But his singing ruins everything.
