I was a lineman in the early '90s when Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), also known as "Pacific Graft and Extortion," warned us about being replaced by robots. That was 35 years ago, and while tools like battery-powered sawzalls, impact guns, and more bucket trucks improved over time, I never saw the robot they claimed would take my job. Similarly, when it comes to rough estimates for framing projects or fence construction, tools like ChatGPT can be helpful, but they’re only as accurate as the information you provide. The more precise the input, the better the results. While it’s an interesting gizmo, nothing can replace the physical time spent working with the plans.

I use to work for one of the biggest construction companies in the US! 13 years ago they sent me to a start up company in SF to give them information for a drywall finishing robot they were developing. I laughed at first but now it is on commercial jobs! It is slow now but will continue to get faster and faster without injury and work 24/7! AI will change the world!

15:20 Florida GC here. A 2000 sqft home in block (extremely common here) could be done in 1 day total. Usually a crew of 4 to 6 people would cost about $4500 in labor.

The robots can make perfect flat foundation first. Also robots can use metal framing to get perfect square

Hopefully AI allows the common blue collar worker to run a business and put in the work himself and hire some young labor that's willing to learn.

Yo Matt - look forward to the finish up on the studio! 💪 What I'd say is that robots excel with "predictable and standardized" tasks like laying bricks or pouring concrete, while humans are better at handling "complex and variable" tasks like custom framing or intricate woodwork. I think the brick machine, 3d printing, line printing for layout are all happening and going to spread. Only makes sense to automate what you can. ROI will be a huge factor of course, since how many houses/commercial/warehouses would I have to build to justify $1m on a Hadrian-X, for example. Numbers gotta work. I still think trades are the way to go BECAUSE of AI. More people in the tech space, less people in the trades = need for trades and higher wages. Ironically, I live on both construction AND tech intersect. 🤙

Panelized walls/floors/roofs have been around a long time now, some built with some computerized machines, not fully automated yet but they could be one day easily. There`s also concrete panelized walls(Superior Walls) with integrated footer, waterproofing, insulation and studs. Which also could be easily fully automated. Both combined and a crane with small crew, I could see a house up from foundation to roof in a one or two days. So I always wonder why sub-division developers haven't adopted yet? It's not like they don't have the money.
@chrisvids182011 күн бұрын
Just my take, but it's because developers have cheap (immigrant labor) and like he said, the walls are the easy part. Developers often use floor trusses and roof trusses which brings the level of skill needed way down, and speeds the build way up. I work at a truss manufacturing company as a drafter/designer. We make roof and floor trusses and our facility absolutely could make wall panels, but we don't. There is even a tab on my CAD program for wall panels. Why don't we? I don't know for sure. I'll have to ask around and find out. Maybe we are at max output capacity. Our shop runs two 10 hour shifts 5 days a week. Overall the building process is very streamlined. The customer gives us plans and we also use our 3d model to estimate most materials on the job like studs sheathing, plates, shingles. We ship them to the jobsite in "packs" as needed so the jobsite isn't cluttered. It's pretty cool. Of course things can always be improved. Maybe wall panels are too heavy for the benefit?

Great vid Matt. You've been hitting it outa the park lately as the American's say. FBR is an Ozzie company that I've been watching for some time as an investment idea. They're not there yet but as the tech sector adoption rate builds into the exponential phase, I think FBR might be quite good in the future. Have a great time at the concrete expo. Also my heart goes out to everyone in Cali 😥

This was a cool video to supplement all of the other videos you make. I didn't see any adhesive on those blocks they were stacking, I wonder how that works out?

Funny! Our company was one of the first to use the layout robot many years ago. It drove right off the 2nd floor and destroyed it lol!

Great video Matt 🔨. AI thinks too linear to fully replace people. I don't think it's better it only makes things more efficient for the company over the long run. As you stated, there are many variables to consider and we humans have our own computers to compute things vs imputing plans and adaptation.

Literally have the word “ROBOT” in our 5 year plan. I think we actually it written in 2028, I’m thinking about the stacks of tiles and flooring, 50lb bags of crete and sand, get the robot to carry all of it. Or how about a couple robots doing demo and I’ll just cap the lines, handle the electrical and line out where to cut.

Looked like a snapper machine comes with someone sitting on their but. Brick house is stupid, Thay don't show people loading the machine or electric going in . No imbeded rebar holding to the slab, can you imagine what the kids would do to it at night you would have to rebuild it in the morning.

I definitely don't think the current robotics etc could replace or take jobs from humans. But I could definitely see it happening as AI becomes more and more intelligent and it's designing the robotics vs humans designing the robotics.
@MattBangsWood12 күн бұрын
Smart take - so instead of us, it would be the AI designing. I could see that happening. I don't believe it's something we can do right now though!

the biggest problems I see is first the workers afraid of losing there jobs. from the fist flint ax man has wished he didn't have to work that is the point in tool making. eliminating effort reducing energy consumption through tooling reducing work. second I would have to say that because what we know as modern construction has so many variables it would be cumbersome to marry the two (human and machine). in these situations a new design created by man but built all by machine has to occur. the biggest problem is the market structure. it demands automation to beat out competitors.
