Rob, thank you for making this video! It has been very helpful. I've watched many other airbrush tutorials but never one that explained, in such succinct terms, how to think different paints from different manufacturer. This evening I took 2 different layer paints from Citadel (Morghast Bone and Wraithbone) and thinned them to perfection. With some Liquitex Flow Aid thrown in, I had zero clogging and zero splatter. I could not believe home smoothly the paint came out and how easy it was to control the build up of color. Thank you so much!!!

Thanks, you've managed to clearly explain the reasons for many of my airbrushing mishaps. Thank you Rob! I have studied loads of guides and tutorials and even done a two day airbrush class but I have never, for some reason, got the right consistency with my paint. Because you are using the same paints and same airbrush I am now able to get the same even spray you do. All this time and I was obsessively thinning the paint down, and using a PSI way too low. I'm already seeing results.

This is an absolutely awesome video, thank you so much. I am a brand new airbrush user. Citadel paints. I’m trying to use their airline of paint but I have a lot of manual brush paints that I will probably be converting a small amount of because they don’t make the air paint in that variety. I have a couple questions. 1. I’m assuming I should use distilled water for the thinner mix? 2. Why the 20 water 1 flow improver mix over simply straight pre mixed thinner? I own both in Vallejo so before I start, just curious.

I learned to make paint thin, first, then thicken as needed, I waste less paint and have way less painting issues, and clean my tip with a Q tip dipped in water very often, I never paint with the tip protector off, because a unprotected tip, gets damaged very fast and easy with me!

@oscarstone93615 жыл бұрын
A lot of helpful information here. I have problems getting a smooth looking edge especially with white paint, the edge will look smooth but there will be some specs that stray and give it a grainy look especially in areas where there would be a contrasting colour, some specs even end up where I really dont want them and cant be seen when you look at the item from the front but when you look at it at an angle it is quite apparent and it spoils the clean look im going for. I can mask the area but i end up getting a ghost like harsh line which is not what I want. Holding the airbrush further away would give a smoother transition but the spray pattern would then be to wide, holding it closer will cause spidering if im not super careful. I use acrylic paint from a well known brand and i would always use reducer at a 1/1 ratio, sometimes even 2/1 (reducer/paint). I use a airbrush with a .25mm needle at 15-20 psi. Would adding retarder help with this? Its also hard to gauge how paint will react on a model as opposed to paper, paper tends to be more forgiving as it is more textured and the paint grips better, but on a smooth surface of a model the paint would react differently.

Something I noticed you not doing was backfilling, putting your finger over the tip while letting air through to mix your paint, your air brush. What do you think of this technique? Why do you choose not to do it?
@RobPaintsModels5 жыл бұрын
I don't do it because it's not necessary, it isn't faster than mixing with a brush and has a chance that paint will either bubble out of the cup or flush back up the needle, dry there and cause it to get stuck.

What’s the best alternative for acrylic thinner ... if you can’t access to it ? .... I have acrylic paints from (acrylic & fabric paint ) soo what can I do ?
@raxxor184 жыл бұрын
Distilled water will make your paint thinner, alcohol will make your paint dry faster, glycerol will make your paint dry slower. Acrylic medium will help you make paint more transparent without altering the consistency.
@jm83614 жыл бұрын
There are a number of options. Distilled water works. Some people like water and windex. Others use rubbing alchohol, water, and flow aid; but check the paint first some paints (Vallejo) don't like alcohol. If you can get air brush medium or acrylic medium that would be best.

Hi ya, I hope that you're well. I am trying to find acrylic Vallejo primers in red, yellow and blue so that I can create my own colours, as I'm finding that acrylic PRIMERS are very scarce apart from black, white, cream and possibly just one other. Would you know where I can get them from. All I seem to get in search results is Vallejo Polyuerthane which I believe is no good to paint over with acrylic base coats.

Painting tutorial idea/Recommendation/request: One thing I will hear a lot of the better painters say, including yourself, is how many times you might start over on a certain part or section of a miniature. While at first thought this sound super simple but I have often found that things are easier said than done. For example another thing I hear a lot, especially during the priming phase, is not to over paint/apply and lose detail. How do you avoid this if you are repainting something multiple times? When to strip & when to just paint over existing work? Can/how/should you do localized stripping?
@RobPaintsModels5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on how thin and smooth your paint is. Primer (especially from a can) is relatively thick compared to the paint you're going to put over it. So long as you are thinning your paint and applying smooth coats you can paint over it dozens of times before you notice.

Very good video, I learned a alot. I just picked up an airbrush and was wondering if your are using Vallejo or Citadel acrylics do you need to worry about ventilation much? How much does one need to worry about breathing in acrylic water based paint? Reason I ask is I dont have much space and actually want (need) to paint in doors.
@raxxor184 жыл бұрын
Think of acrylic paint as plastic pigments. If you breathe them in, they will stay in your lungs. But pigments are heavy so they don't stay in the air for long. Only a few end up in the air anyways. Opening a window and wearing a mask while working should be enough.

@RobPaintsModels5 жыл бұрын
Bin 'em. Unless you are using Tamiya paints you don't want alcohol anywhere near your airbrush except for cleaning it. Alcohol based thinners evaporate quickly leading to increased tip dry and react badly with water based acrylics making them thicker and causing them to separate. All you need to thin water based acrylics for an airbrush is water and a little flow improver or drying retarder (Winsor & Newton and Liquitex are both good brands for these). "Hobby" companies trying to sell you thinners and mediums are ripping you off at best and selling you products that just don't work at worst. You can get everything you need from art supply companies that are more transparent with what's actually in their products.

@RobPaintsModels5 жыл бұрын
20 to 1 water to flow improver but it depends on the brand. Just follow the instructions on the bottle! I never pre-thin my paints in the pot because you can always add more thinner but it's almost impossible to take it out.

Hi Rob. Recently found your channel, liked it, subscribed. With regards to air brushing Surface Primer, I've had adhesion issues. I determined that perhaps the paint was drying prior to hitting the model. Not wanting to thin the primer, I lowered the air pressure to about 17 psi. That helped but still had issues. So, I went with a larger tip. I think it may be 0.5 mm. That was a big improvement. Note, parts were thoroughly cleaned with Simple Green and a toothbrush, rinsed, dried overnight. Paint was applied in many thin layers. Can you suggest anything else, or point out something I'm doing wrong? Many thanks!
