So, the idea of coffee roasting popped in your head and now you are here… Great to have you and welcome aboard. I imagine your journey is starting out much like mine did, looking up roasters and figuring out where to get green coffee beans. You may also immediately want a large beautiful roaster before finding out how much they actually cost… gulp… Let’s start small!
I truly hope this video was able to bring some value to you. It can be very overwhelming in the beginning trying to find a roaster to cut your teeth on and green coffee that is not in 100-pound sacks. The hardest part is literally not knowing where to look or find the info you need.
Below are the resources I discussed in the video. I have consolidated a very basic list but please be aware there are far more coffee roasters, individuals in the industry, and coffee importers than I have listed below. Please use them to your advantage and learn as much as you can. This coffee roasting journey is truly amazing so let’s enjoy it together. I hope to bring some future value to the videos I have planned so please subscribe to stay in the loop!

Rob, you just described the last 5 years of my life. This video would have saved me a bunch of time not having to discover all this on my own. I took an online course from Boot Coffee, read Rao’s book and got to roasting. Mill City Roasters course is a damn good binge watch. Tons more books and thousands of roasts later I’m still learning. No one ever talks about the dirty job of deep cleaning the coffee roaster and exhaust stack etc.

I am considering roasting coffee for a side hustle / business. Thanks for this. I used to road coffee at a business decades ago. Now after roasting a few batches at home i am hooked . I remember those days of good coffee and want them back. I am excited for the process and know what it takes . But thank you for listing it all out . Yes it’s all about a plan. The legal part is what i am most concerned about . Roasting at. Home. In my home. Have to check out if i need a true class A chimney or not ? Or simply an exhaust tube. You get the idea. For now just having fun getting a bunch of roasts under my belt . Enjoying Costa Rica laminita right now . I’ll reach out again. Thanks

Great video. I've been roasting all of the coffee I consume myself for about 2 years now. I started using a popcorn popper that I modified with an Arduino and a Solid State Relay to enable me to modulate the heat. That served me well for a long time, but I could only roast 85G batches and it was taking all my Saturday mornings to roast enough to have, and a little to share once in a while. I'm using a Chinese Wok now, on my stove. I can roast bigger batches, and the clean up is easier. I can spend less than half of the time roasting, but the drawback is that it is very labor intensive, constant stirring, and I am not always getting as good of roast uniformity as I'd like. Great job of pointing out so many great sources of information. More roads to go down...

Just bumped into this channel. It's awesome. I am from Kenya. Our family business for many years has been coffee farming. I personally do arabica coffee a farming. But that's all we do. We just farm and sell it red-fresh. I want to begin roasting and probably packaging. But I am GREEN. All the information I search is too much, I feel I need a roadmap. I will go through all your videos and those that you recommend, but is there like some cheat sheet that covers the roadmap of different kinds of roasting?
@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee
@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee 2 жыл бұрын
There is no cheat sheet or short cut. The short cut is to get a small roaster and just start roasting and learning. It takes hundreds of roasts to get good so the faster you can start the better chances to learn. Plus everything you are reading and learning will start to make more sense once you have some experience roasting. The advantage you will have later is the direct quality of the production side. Are you looking to start roasting as a business over there? Hit me up if you have any questions! Happy to help!

Myself when I go camping I have a cast iron pot with a crack in the bottom. I roast a few pounds a year for my own use. I have given some beans to freinds. They say that my coffee has a smoke flavor. @roygiehtbrock9124
@roygiehtbrock9124 4 жыл бұрын
@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee When I say whole bean I mean just that. Not ground or cracked. When we are at an re-enactment I would roast the beans over the fire as I said sometimes I would put a 1 inch square chunk of hickory or maple in with the beans. The wood would char much like the beans roast. Now you roast during the day then at night you take your bean in a 2 quart pot I take 3 hands full of beans put them in the water UN-ground. You hang your put near the edge of the fire careful not to boil your water. You leave your pot hang or sit next to your fire all night long. The next morning you build up your fire and put on you pot of coffee. Now as I tell people you have to cook your beans slow. Now cooking them slowly your coffee will not have that bitter bight like most coffee's do. You will have the smoothest tasting coffee you have ever had. Now I have met some people that thought they have tasted some really FINE coffee. This guy wanted to taste mine and I said the coffee was cold but didn't matter to him. It was the bottom of the pot. He tasted it and was amazed. So if you go to an event an if you see someone cooking there beans ask if you can have a taste of that whole been coffee. Oh ya never toss out your beans you just add another hand full and start the process all over again. Nice!

Thanks so much man. I've been roasting for a bit of time now, but I really need to educate myself and finding resources has been a bit of a challenge, so thanks again for the video.

Not a problem man. That’s why I made it. I went down so many dead end rabbit holes in the beginning. It’s a fun journey for sure and the resources I discuss are just the tip of the iceberg. There plenty more! Good luck on your journey man and hit me up if you need anything!

@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee Hey Rob! Yes, I am! And I actually run a small coffee business with my husband! Previously we had an old partner roasting for us, but in the past 4 months or so we started learning how to roast with others and on our own, and we actually just bought our own roaster! So here’s to learning fast haha! 😅🎉👏🏽

It’s definitely possible. A few batches depending on the roaster can make plenty for a good size gathering. People love seeing it too. I have people always asking to come watch.
