I'm a 63 year old performer (Singer), I can't perform this song because I'm an Australian who finds it such and emotional song, that I can't get through it without crying. It means so much. It should be the National Anthem, even if I'd never get to the end of it...

Rob, I highly recommend that you watch The Voice Australia blind auditions when “The Bushwackers” duo sang this. One of them, Dobe Newton, co-wrote “We Are Australia” with Bruce Woodley of “The Seekers”. Just key in “The Bushwackers We Are Australia The Voice Australia”. Choose the longer of two results as it shows some very heartwarming stories that provide more depth about the positive effects of this song. The thumbnail includes the words “You wrote our anthem”.

This song is so apt to our Country right now, so beautifully written and sung. I found out ten years ago my paternal grandfather was sent out on a convict ship, he was a 17 year old that worked in London, apparently he stole a cap to wear as he worked for the Tailor, seven years hard labour and was then gifted a piece of land in Victoria! I love my ancestry, and my Country, because of that hardship I now have a good life. This song was sung by a huge crowd of Victorians during their lockdowns, by the daughter of one of the men in the seekers, another beautiful voice. Cheers.

@@Bellas1717, yes. It would be too long. But, which verse(s) would be left out?
@Bellas1717
@Bellas1717 Ай бұрын
@ Yes, but it doesn’t need omission, it needs to be rewritten a bit. None of the verses make sense alone - Primary school kids would not be singing "…I've been the first Australian." Many national anthems are 5-7 verses long, but usually only 1-2 are sung, often not the first two. The original of Advance Australia Fair is four verses, but our anthem version is just two, and we sing the second verse as the first. The first two verses of I Am Australian can be condensed to one for the short anthemic form, and the last verse slightly rewritten to give the two verses needed for more formal occasions. (We still have to play God Save the King at the most official ceremonies.) The history and culture of the middle verses can be retained in the poetic written version, just not sung in the anthem. The ARM has been given an example of this rewrite with the first verse referencing all the ways people became Australians, and the second verse the diversity of the places we live: "I come from the Dreamtime, First Nations I remain. I came upon the prison ship, bound down by iron chain. I left my own, I chose this home, from war and strife I’ve run. My heart is in this great land, I am Australian. We are one… I’m the hot wind from the desert, I’m the black soil of the plains. I’m the Outback and the farmlands, I’m the drought and flooding rains. I am the Rock, the southern sky, the city, beach and sun. I’m the spirit of this great land, I am Australian. We are one…"

@Bellas1717 Ай бұрын
@@keyboardoracle1044 No gripe. I love this song. I teach it to new arrivals as a potted lesson in Aussie culture. It just doesn't work as an anthem in its current format. An anthem needs to have two forms: one standalone verse plus chorus for things like schoool assemblies. There currently isn't a single verse that can do that. Imagine kindergarten kids being taught any one of the current verses and it becomes obvious. The second format, required for formal occasions, is two cohesive verses plus chorus. Again, the current form of the song can't do that. But if Bruce Woodley and/or Dobe Newton could be encouraged to rewrite it into anthemic form, actually really easy to do, and both were ready to sell/give away the rights, it would rival the best anthems of the world. There currently is an example of a rewrite with the Australian Republic Movement. A new chapter in Australia's history needs a new anthem. This would be perfect.
@keyboardoracle1044
@keyboardoracle1044 Ай бұрын
@ the way I see it you have 2 or 3 verses that are personal then the chorus, then the cultural verses then chorus… I’d like to see a verse for refugees added then you could just have the personal verses and the chorus. And the cultural ones as the second verse, no one knows the second verse of the current national anthem anyway.
@Bellas1717
@Bellas1717 Ай бұрын
@@keyboardoracle1044 AAF is four verses long in its original form, then it was cut to two because four was far too long for people to sing. The first verse we sing is the second of the original song. "No one knows the second verse" because, as with almost every national anthem worldwide, only one verse and chorus are sung 90% of the time, with two verses and chorus usually just on formal occasions. This is the example, not by any means a final version, of the verses that could be anthemic that the ARM have. The first verse shows the origins of the Australian people, the last recognises the diversity of the land where they live. Verses in between, as with many national anthems, remain in the song as history and culture, but aren't sung as the anthem. I come from the Dreamtime, First Nations I remain. I came upon the prison ship, bound down by iron chain. I left my own, I chose this home, from war and strife I’ve run. My heart is in this great land, I am Australian. I’m the hot wind from the desert, I'm the black soil of the plains. I'm the Outback and the farmlands, I’m the drought and flooding rains. I am the Rock, the southern sky, the city, beach and sun. The spirit of this great land, I am Australian. We are one, but we are many, And from all the lands on earth we come. We'll share a dream, and sing with one voice: "I am, you are, we are Australian."

I saw The Seekers when they performed at The Lyric Theatre in Brisbane (can't remember the year) as part of their farewell tour. All my life I'd enjoyed their songs and their singing. I was surprised at how entertaining they were during their live performance. Their musicality was obvious. Also obviously, they really liked and respected each other. They all had great diction and good voices. Judith Durham's voice, of course, was phenomenal. I could hear how their voices slotted together, and all four of them were essential to producing their unique sound. All those hours of practising and performing together with people they liked really showed.

It is 60 years since the Seekers were located in Britan where they had chart topping songs and this was at the time when the Beatles charted with regular monotony. This one was co composed by Bruce Woodley and a mate of his, Dobe Newton, an Aussie institution who has sung Aussie folklore songs with the Bushwackers for well over 50 years. When it comes to this type of music there are several in England that go back a long way in anthems such as All things bright and beautiful, Land of Hope and Glory. Your alternate national anthem Jerusalem often substitutes (at Olympics) for GSTK.

Despite it's beauty it would not be suitable for our National Anthem; Advance Australia Fair is by far the most appropriate for that role. But this song, it pulls at the heartstrings, mainly due to the voices & harmonies The Seekers bring to it. No other group, no other voices, could do it justice. I love this song being a first generation Australian, but I also love My Country I Vow to Thee which could rightly be your National Anthem…🤔

And people still blaming immigrants for cost of living and all other problems here. Ironic isn’t it while Australia is the land of immigrants. We are one but we are many, we all come from other great lands. Edit: just to clarify, I only blame those who came here and do not share the same dream, they are not Australian.

Definitely should be our anthem

For those who would have this as our national anthem, it cannot be. A national anthem requires 1-2 self inclusive verses, and a chorus. Which two verses would school children sing? Which would be chosen at the Olympics? This doesn’t work without it being rewritten, although that’s very achievable.

I'm Aussie, we are one we are many we come from all the lands on earth. Yet some say we are a racist country, so who in Ausrtralia is racist against who ?!?!

Unfortunately, there are racists all over the world, Australia included. Growing up, I heard alot of rubbish talked about indigenous Australians, Asians and "wogs". And I'm white and I heard buckets of this garbage from friends and their parents. You don't have to look too far to find it. But in general, Australians are tolerant and welcoming people.

@@davidarkinstall6675 When times are hard, as they are worldwide after the pandemic, fear rises as the foremost emotion. Fear of the different is the easiest to manipulate, and right-wing extremists prey on that. That’s why we are seeing an increase in right-wing tendencies, especially of overt racism, around the world. We see it in Australia, although to a much lesser extent. We see it in people ignorantly decrying immigration, although our economy desperately needs skilled workers who make up the greater majority of immigrants. We see it in small yet present neo-Nazi demonstrations. We saw it with The Voice referendum. We need to be watchful of the spread.

@@Flash-sr8hmIn my early years in primary school in the early 50s we welcomed many children who had come from war-torn, war-weary Europe, and learned to accept and take on board other cultures, Christmas Carols were some of the first we adapted to. I wonder how those children are today, like me they would be in their 70s and early 80s. I think it had a great bearing on my attitude to refugees, hopefully making me a more tolerant person. That is my hope for Australia which this lovely song represents.

Hi Rob, You don't need to live in Australia to be an honorary Aussie. You and Charlie were adopted as such quite some time ago.

No no no, it is the UK (the collective of three countries) that allowed Australia to have this song.

Australia is a racial melting pot. I don't think there are many countries in the world that do not have representation here. I am Australian covers the original owners and the "newcomers" It really is a pocket history. The Seekers should have been declared a national treasure and that song should be our national anthem. Regrettably Judith Durham passed away in 2022. A very sad loss. If I ever hear that with out tears I will be very concerned.

As an Australian I would completely support this as our Anthem. I’ve never liked our current one.

“I Vow to Thee My Country” would be a good equivalent song for England. Check out the Royal Marines version.
