Yes, same here. I was super reluctant ‘downgrading’, well, what I thought was a downgrade from a 1DXMKII. Not one regret, and already have my MKii for sale to make room for a 2nd R6 body.

@@RobSambles I'm using a Sigma 28-70mm EX Aspherical DF... I can't really find original official info about it but some forums mention it as far back as 2005. No issues whatsoever (apart from the issues I have with that lens on any occasion, which are in no way R6 related or specific) Its autofocus mechanism is slow, loud and clunky and I still get about 8 frames per second with mechanical shutter. Between 13-16 fps on electronic shutter. I did make it hard for the lens by moving to and away from the subject, the subject being an online stopwatch with milliseconds displayed. :) Proper science LOL

Only one addition/ correction about the overheating issue - it's massively region-specific. I'm based in South India where the climate is exactly as hot as you'd think and I tested the R6 on the latest firmware in April this year. For video, it would consistently let me record about 12-15 minutes (working on a doc about agricultural co-ops in rural India) before overheating and then the cooldown period was unpredictable. This was already known. The unpleasant surprise was while shooting stills. I have to correct Rob and say that in some conditions, it absolutely will overheat and did for me. It did not shut down but it gave me a temperature warning, at which point I didn't risk it further because that would've compromised video shooting. So, my conclusion is that the R6 is undoubtedly a terrific camera for many people, but it just isn't fit for purpose in all conditions, particularly warm climates. Cheers.

You forgot the myth, '20 megapixels isn't enough'. A little research shows it's more than enough to print large and if you want to crop, it's also fine. You can use something like Gigapixel A1 if you're really worried and if you have to massively crop - there's something wrong with your photography. How did people survive before 20 plus megapixel cameras? I was worried when looking at this camera, that my tele lenses wouldn't work as they are old first generation - 500mm f4 Mk1 and the 400mm f5.6. I still have my Sigma 500mm f4.5, old and 3rd party, and they all work fine.

Thanks for this video, Rob. I've been worried about the overheating issue, but am going to buy the R6 now. Can you comment on the quality of 4K in Movie Cropping mode? Reason is I have an 80D with an 18-135mm EF-S lens that has a PZ-E1 Power Zoom adapter. I love that lens! But will the 4K look bad compared with the 4K oversampled from 5.1K using say the RF 24-105mm kit lens, apart from the fact that that RF glass is better?

Rolling shutter is not a real issue for me when it comes to basketball but I still prefer to shoot with mechanical shutter. With volleyball it can be problematic. As long as you don't move in the horizontal plane when taking photos the rolling shutter is not an issue. But when the ball is moving from the top of the frame to the bottom of the frame the ball will deform a lot. It almost starts to look like a rugby ball, even with high shutter speed. So when you shoot volleybal, I don't recommend using the electronic shutter. I also still use EF lenses and all my lenses are compatible with the EF/RF adapter but not all are compatible for high speed shooting when using the mechanical shutter. Here is my list: * Canon EF 20mm F/2.8 USM: compatible, no high speed * Canon EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 USM: compatible, no high speed * Canon EF 50mm F/1.4 USM: compatible, no high speed * Canon EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS III USM: compatible, high speed * Canon EF 85mm F/1.8 USM: compatible, no high speed * Canon EF 100mm F/2.8 L IS USM Macro: compatible, high speed * Sigma 120-300mm F/2.8 DG OS HSM Sport: compatible, no high speed

Hi Rob. I shoot fast moving flight shots of birds. I do notice still the bird freezing in the viewfinder in mechanical shutter mode. Like the bird is flying in slow motion. It is a bit annoying, as I have to predict that the bird is moving fast instead of going by the camera slowing down the bird so to speak. Is there a setting I am missing? I believe I turned off the image review so I don’t think it’s that issue. Any thoughts? It happened on the 10-500 the other day. Thanks.

I used a friend's R6/500 F4 IS (version 1) and it stopped focusing twice in 20 mins (the dreaded locked red AF point). Another friend was using the same type of lens on his R5 at the same location and said yes, it does happen on occasion for him too. However, I use the R5 with the Version 2 of the 500 and have NEVER had a problem, outside of one lock up of the entire camera since launch.

The oldest EF lens I have on hand is the EF 28-105 f3.5-4.5 USM and it works just fine. I do have a couple of EF-S lenses and I wish canon would give you the option to not auto crop to 1.6 so I could crop where I want from whatever image it gives, but they work fine too otherwise. There is a slight confusion adapting vintage glass, you have to poke a setting allowing the shutter to fire "with no lens attached", but once done vintage works well too. I did run into a mild issue with the shutter, in electronic first curtain mode at 1/8000th I get a black band at the bottom of frame, but it goes away in full mechanical or full electronic mode.

To be fair, the overheating issue is the only one of these five I’d heard of. I have experienced overheating while filming 4K on interviews. My R6 cooked itself while shooting video outdoors one sunny morning. 12 minutes into the footage audio deteriorated, started crackling. 17 minutes camera shut down. Whole morning shoot abandoned. Taken back to store, they replaced the motherboard. So it is a thing, particularly in warmer climates. I have also had a lot of trouble with the camera draining the battery while camera is turned off. So reach into camera bag and nup, camera is dead. Wifi and Viltrox adapter appear to be the culprits.

@@TimHuhtala well that I’m not 100% sure if it’s the same between the R5 and the R6, because I shoot the R5...but for R5 specs the faster the shot the less bit depth. 14bit electronic and mechanical single shot, then H+ drops mechanical to 13bit and electronic to 12bit. For me personally, I don’t notice much of a difference when it drops the depth, so the trade off for a much faster fraction of a second moment is worth it. Pretty sure the 1DX III also has a 12bit at 20fps

for my r6, overheating is a bit of a problem for video, not so much for photography. if you're gonna use it for long takes as your A cam then you'll definitely need an external recorder or to shoot in 1080p, but otherwise you'll definitely be okay if you're taking shorter clips with time in between in 4k30/60. I spent 2 days shooting some BTS for a music video with just the R6, it overheated once, and that was because I forgot to stop rolling while i was eating. other times its definitely gotten really hot while its been powered through USB-C on my v-mount while recording externally, but didn't shut off, but definitely was giving me the heat warning. if you use the r6 primarily for photos you'll never encounter overheating, but probably will if you're doing video.

I have the Canon EF 300 2.8 IS and use it for college sports on the R6. Wow. Works perfectly with a slightly slower frame rate BUT if I need more I use the electronic shutter. I don't spray and pray so I can always get what I need either way. Also, if I want 10 fps I slap it on the 7D MII.

Old EF lenses on modern Canons - mention this! I switched late to Canon, in 2019. In analogue times I prefered Nikon. I bought in summer 2018 a very good old cam bag in a charity store for €15. In the bag was an old EOS 500 with 35-70mm lens, both made in the 1990s. This gave me the ieda to give Canon a try. I bought a cheap EOS 40D with shuttercount about 4000 in august 2018 an mounted the old 35-70 lens. AF okay and fast, image quality outdated. March 2019 I bought another used but very good cam bag, it was sold with a another EOS 500, a 28-80 and a 80-200 lens, all made in the 1990s, too. Both lenses worked on the 40D very good and fine. But this was the reason why now I switched to Canon. I will mention only my "worst" Canons, the EOS 77D and the R. I own modern lenses for both and I use some EF glass on both, e.g. the 40mm pancake. I tested all the old glass made for 35mm film cams on all my modern digital Canons and it is amazing. The Af ist fast and accurate, the AF tops often the AF of some Fujifilm AP-C with Fujinon lenses, both, the cams and lenses made 30 years after the old Canon glass. Later I tested all old Canon glass with the R and the EF Adapter and it's the same story: astonishing fast and good AF for these old glasses. Compared to this some high priced modern SIGMA AF and EF-S lenses have less good or slower AF on Canon APS-C or FF cams. In 2019 I got a brandnew Yongnuo 50mm/f1.8 for peanuts. I bought it to try out what one can expect from thies cheap one. It's a bad lens. The AF fails often, it's AF is slow and it pumps. Adopted to the Canon EOS R with the EF adapter it worked much better as on my APS-C Canons or my fullframe Canon DSLRs. I also used a now sold EF 70-200 USM IS and a very old push-pull 70-200/f4 AF lens on the R. Both worked fine and AF was fast. In my opnion Canon is the best choice over Nikon and Sony, because every old glass you have and every less you can afford will work, some good, some with lacks, some very good.

@@getwetsoon the optical viewfinder is definitely better, the R6 EVF is slow to spool up from switch on also you need the camera on all the time just to get an idea of composition not good considering the battery life. With the 5D you don’t get the warped look on some fast moving objects I believe its called rolling shutter warp which is quite common on mirrorless camera. The R6 auto focus is better but you do need the RF lenses to get full benefit. I disagree with the overheating not being a problem I mean I do think people blow it out of proportion but I hit the overheating pretty often even at 4k 24fps. I also do notice lag in the viewfinder in dark situations almost never when I'm outside with decent light.
@mxilplict
@mxilplict 3 жыл бұрын
yeah - I’ve found the same but only in extreme low light. the expo simulation seems coupled to AF. If you have shutter release coupled to AF lock, it can definitively lag and slow down response as you wait for the camera to adjust its sensitivity in the live image/viewfinder preview before you can pull the trigger. This is why I still keep my 5d4 for low light situations where the focus assist LED from triggers and speed lights will allow me to get a prompt focus lock in near complete darkness

You have to wait around 20-30 mins for it to cool back down to be able to shoot another 25min clip. You can get away with little 1-2 min clips after the initial long 25 min. @PPNJ
@PPNJ 3 жыл бұрын
@@steveseaney6840 it will cool down if you switch to photos for a while but the heat factor when recording video is accumulative so you'll see a timer that tells you what the longest clip you can record is. When you use it a bit the timer will go to 15 mins then 10 mins then 5 and you would need to wait at least 10-15 mins after any single clip to regain your timer back to say the 20 or 25 min limit. It's hard to explain but once you really start using it for video it definitely overheats in my view kind of quickly but don't get me wrong it does what canon says it does and the footage is beautiful I really do love the R6

My engineering analysis is that it's not physically possible to downscale an 8K image and record high bit rates in a DSLR-sized body because it will overheat, you require a fan and/or an external recorder; hens why the FX3 has a fan. The R6 doesn't overheat when you line skip, and 8K can line skip with integer math, but it does overheat when you down sample. I personally would prefer a 10 or 12MP stacked sensor. I'm not really trying to blow up my photos to building scale. It's more over does this tool work well for you? That $3000 Canon 28-70mm RF f/2.0 lens is dreamy. It convinced me to sell my 3 Canon M6 Mark II and EF-M lens collection for a Sony A7C full-frame camera with a Tamron 28-75mm and 17-28 f/2.8 lens. It's pretty close and has unlimited record time, but sucky 8-bit 4:2:2 with micro HDMI. It still has rolling shutter. Rolling shutter is just a part of high megapixel cameras. You need a stacked sensor like the Sony ZV-1, RX10, or RX100, but the low-light sucks on those. They are great cameras though, I've got the ZV-1 and RX10 IV and they're a great pair with the full-frame.

Had the R6 for a couple of weeks now and I'm very happy with it, I've kept my 80D but have noticed a huge improvement in my keeper rate for birds in flight. I was trying out the electronic shutter with blue tits flying in and out of a nest, and only noticed one image where the rolling shutter seems to have caused any noticeable distortion. As regards lenses I've got a very old EF50 1.4 and the original Sigma 70-200 ex dg hsm, when I attach them the display is blinking white, which according to the manual means I can only shoot at 6.8 fps, both of these lenses are 20 odd years old, and it's most probably unreasonable to expect them to perform at the same level as newer lenses. @RoccoGermani 3 жыл бұрын
@@marekspitalsky8863 the 17-35 is an excellent lens on crop sensor, before I got the R6 I had a T6i and used it on there. There are two issues with my lens that make me want to upgrade in the future, the first one is just a problem that I uncovered: the switch for autofocus and manual focus on the lens isn't screwed in like the newer ones, so it can easily be popped off, and that's what happened when I was shooting basketball. I was able to put it back on the lens but it no longer is able to switch to manual focus, so it is stuck in autofocus. Just something to watch out for. Now image quality is a great question. On full frame it is definitely softer in the corners, but only at 17mm. When you zoom in to 35mm it goes away. Unfortunately there is a ton of chromatic aberration at 17mm too, and I mean a ton. I was unable to correct it in lightroom on a few occasions, it's that bad. It really depends on what you're shooting so it could be better or worse depending on that. If you'd like to see some photos I've taken with the R6 and 17-35 you can view a few on my Instagram: @oneandonlyrocco. A majority of my photos that have been posted since September were taken with the R6 and 17-35. It's a great lens, but I think in the future I might upgrade to either a newer 16-35 or bust the bank and go for the 15-35 RF.
