Brought up on Reggae music all my life in London, Hackney. I met my wife whose from Warrington who introduced me to NS music 4 years ago at the Blackpool Winter Gardens. I can honestly say that since then my life musically, emotionally, and spiritually has changed forever, I don’t listen to reggae music as much now, its been all about NS since then. Silly to bring colour into this but the (Northern) soul started with black people in USA. People from the North of England took it and owned it, and quite rightly so! I’m 4 years into discovering it, and honestly I’ve got to thank you guys from up north who are responsible for this change from my perspective, Ian Levine, Richard Searling, DJ’s Ginger Taylor, Chris King many more and then the NS crowd for bringing this music to me, the way you all enjoy yourselves is quite aspiring and infectious, I’ve learnt a few dance moves but nothing like you guys, you’re amazing. Things is you have to feel NS music, to get into its rhythm to understand it! Gutted Winter Gardens is not on this year but hopefully The Tower will be open in November 2020 can’t wait to hear the likes of Jimmy Radcliffe, or Bobby Paris KTF
@bryanwood80504 жыл бұрын
It was not silly at all. I've followed Motown since 1964 - there was no thought in my mind, or my friends, of colour. Just the music. But, if you want - all the good clubs, and fab coffee bars, were 'black'. Just made it better. Thank you for the post, Paul.

Love this track: having travelled all over the Country in my younger days (40 years ago) to try and visit as many all-nighters as I could from Wigan and the last days of the Torch, and most venues in between, meeting other fans as strangers and leaving as lifelong friends. Now I am old, 60+ and full of cancer, and when I do have the energy can still be seen dancing around the kitchen although like you, I have slowed it down a bit these days, more Timi Yuro’s ‘It’ll never be over for me’ or Tommy Navarros ‘I cried my life away’ more so than Rita and the Tiaras or Duke Browner - sadly. Casting an eye over other music genres over the last few decades, the rise and fall of punk rock, new romantics etc, and far too many more to Mention here, or remember ? These trends or fashions were just something you did, something you went along with, they didn’t define who you were like the Northern Soul scene which all it asked from you and of you, was passion and dare I say it SOUL. Reflecting on my life back then and those who made the Northern Soul scene what it was, to all of you - we were gods…….

Richard I'm there with you I'm late 60s. Torch vavas Wigan top rank Hanley Mecca. How can you describe the feeling? Gone are my days of back drops front drops and spins but I can still move around mostly in my conservatory lol. Keep the faith. Soulfully bless you brother ✊

I saw The Tempests many time in Charlotte, NC (USA) in the 60's and their music will last forever. We still love them here in Myrtle Beach, SC and hope our friends in the UK love them as well. As a blue blooded Chelsea supporting, born & bred Londoner, I've always felt proud and grateful to have grown up with, and into such a rich genre of black music from Ska, sound systems, Soho sweat boxes and warehouse raves, but I have always been in awe of Northern Soul and would have loved to have been a part of it. It's like the rich history of football that the NW of England produces. . . It's something completely unique. . .it's in the blood. . .. . and it's in the SOUL
