I remember the first time I ever played saxophone. I spent an hour not getting a sound because I had my left index finger on the key above the B that's used for high notes (on my model it looked like the rest of the keys so I thought it was the first key) until I accidentally put my finger too low and all the notes suddenly came out... Fun times

I remember 2 summers ago I signed up for a Jazz band camp and I thought we would learn our instruments there. I had picked the Alto sax and I knew nothing about it aside from the fact that it was a woodwind instrument. I had previously played clarinet so I knew the basics on the mouthpiece but that was about it. When I got there I was put into a room full of people which some I knew definitely didn't know how to play. Everyone was given a test for how good your sound was. He showed us a few different notes and when it came to turning to throw them all together apparently I did well enough to land me in 1st chair with the 8th graders at the time. It was cool because I could brag to my 2nd chair friends but everyone in 1st chair had a lot of that I did not have. to end this short I ended up having to learn 3 on the alto in 3 weeks while also learning how to play to thing but it was alright in the end because it worked out alright and I'm still playing the Alto to this day.

I've been learning to play saxophone since I was 7 and by the time I turned 13, I started playing in jazz orchestra at our music school. Enjoyed this time a lot as we were traveling to different cities and winning some music contests from time to time. The problem was that I had always dreamt to play the electric guitar, which is why I stopped playing saxophone about the age of 17 and never wanted to get back)) Still enjoy playing some jazz standards on the guitar though. Aaand... I want to give the saxophone another try after this video lol.

After not having playing my original clarinet for 66 years, the reed placement on the mouthpiece (okay tried a few mouthpieces) is the total key to fixing squawks et al. All children should be intensely educated in the beginning of playing any reed instrument on that point. A tiny shift at the tip is crucial, same reed same mouthpiece and of course a good reed for the m.piece and correct ligature placement and tightening. But after that uh just a few items : ) He started playing 'To Each Their Own'
@locrianphantom3547 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, at my school band everyone looks at me because I spend like 5 minutes just placing my reed on the mouthpiece when they do it in like 5 seconds. I’m first saxophone in 7th grade, but it’s mixed band so all the 8th graders are still a little better.

Actually, the reed drives the lips, not the other way around. When air is blown into the sax, and the impulse reaches the end of the sax, most of the wave inverts and returns toward the other end. As the inverted pressure wave passes under the reed, the outside atmospheric pressure closes the reed. When the inverted wave finishes passing by, the reed pops open again to allow blown air into the tube again. Lather, rinse and repeat. Same with the trumpet. Lips exercises help you learn how much tension to keep on the reed. Capped double reeds (like the krumhorn) don't even have lips touching the reeds.

So there is one thing I will say I didn’t agree with him on (no hate toward him, he’s way better than me) but a good way to install your reed is to place it where it goes in the ligature, then slide the ligature and reed together onto the mouthpiece and tighten. I used to chip the tip of my reed all the time when I was younger because I would hit the ligature on the reed tip when I put the ligature on, save yourself some trouble if you ever do it again.
