The Realities of Homesteading: Failures & Successes

This collaborative project highlights the dos & don'ts of homesteading, as Rob talks to Jane about a few of the successes & failures he's had over the last 13 years of living on the land.
Jane Shirley, friend & fellow film-maker, travels back to her home village to interview Rob on his 2.5-acre plot in the South West of England in the county of Somerset on the Northern slopes of the Mendip Hills, overlooking the Chew Valley lake, surrounded by lush woodland and trickling brooks.
Rob's Forest Garden off-grid homestead - A one-hectare oasis of biodiversity. An agroforestry garden of useful plants, (started in 2013) all growing symbiotically, utilising the vertical dimension more creatively and productively than the average garden.

Hi Rob and Tilly and bub who has grown so fast. If we never make mistakes we never learn. Life is an ongoing learning experience. I will be 70 next year and I have never stopped questioning and learning. I will keep on like that as long as I can.

Thanks for the update, Rob, I look forward to seeing how you are getting on. I take my hat off to you for taking the plunge. We own a small Wood and have a small "Shed" where we can retreat but are not allowed by the Council to live in it for more than 28 days a year. Even though it’s totally invisible from being overseen by anyone and 1/2 mile away from any public road, it makes no sense. It is our escape, and we love being in our little piece of England. I collect water from the roof but must bring in all drinking water as it is totally off grid. Enjoy Cheers.

Lovely video Rob, I really enjoyed the garden tour a few years ago and felt inspired, we converted our front urban garden into a food forest and harvesting/foraging amongst it with our kids is really special.
