Time in a bottle is one of the most bittersweet songs ever written and recorded. He wrote it for the birth of his young son, only to tragically pass away shortly after. It is often misconstrued to be a sad song while it is not. Truly, it is a sweet lullaby for his new son.😇

@Sometimes-even-lyrical2 жыл бұрын
If you think about the way "Time In A Bottle" is structured, it's not melancholy. It has elements both of wistfulness and hope. See how lines in minor key are followed by lines in major key. I think we may add our own regrets to how we feel about the song, plus some feeling that perhaps the song was some kind of premonition of Jim's untimely death.

She brought me into her house and took me into the family room. One of the walls was completely covered with Maury's Gold Records for all of Jims albums. She told me she heard of her son's passing and Jims the next morning after the crash from one of her neighbors. They had seen the TODAY show on TV that morning who broke the news and the neighbor called thinking that she had already heard about it.....she didnt. Imagine learning of your Sons death from a neighbor who saw it on TV??? Mind Boggling.

I am a huge fan of storytelling songwriters = James Taylor, John Prine, Lyle Lovett, Billy Joel, Leon Russell, Roger Miller (especially his work on the Disney Robin Hood soundtrack) I don’t think there is a better storytelling songwriter than Jim Croce. You feel like you are there from the first word of the song. I play seven or eight of his tunes in my show on a regular basis and they are always very well received. He was such a great singer, songwriter, musician, and storyteller. My favorite was Time in The Bottle. I softer side of Jim. He wrote it for his son rnot long before the accident. I could name so many of his that are awesome. Another fun uptempo song of his is Roller Dirby Queen.

You all have been doing his "fun" songs. There is an emotional side to him. Try Operator, I have to Say I love you in a song, time in a bottle, one less set of footsteps, or New York is not my home. On the other side there are more "fun" songs, Rapid Roy and Workin' at the Car Wash Blues. Any one of these are really good songs.
