Here's a great story about Jim Croce: This song was a huge huge hit. AT the time Sonny and Cher had a variety TV show (music, comedy bits, guest starts) and they wanted Croce to come on and do this song. The early 70's were a very different time than now on TV. The network people (Standards and Practices it was called) told the producers of the show, you can have him, but change the line "baddest man in the whole damn town" to "whole darn town." The show passed this on to Croce who said, more or less, "I'm doing YOU a favor coming on your show. If you want me, you will let me perform the song the way I wrote it." And the network backed down, and he performed his song his way, and that was the first time someone said "damn" on TV that wasn't an accidental thing like a live news broadcast.

You mean the Fonz never exclaimed DAYUM whenever a hot chick passed by? LOL. I suppose when the great Roger Miller sang, "Dang me--dang me they otta take a rope and hang me," instead sang 'damn me, damn me they shoulda took a bat to slam me' would've got him eviscerated 😃 just saying...

He was prolific song writer who left us way too soon. This was a perfect example of his fun side along with "Don't Mess Around With Jim". He also wrote some of the most beautiful story songs ever, such as "Operator" and "Time in a Bottle". Amber would surely fall in love with both of those and drift away into the "Amber sway".

Such a loss to the world, when he died at age 30 in a plane crash. But he left his mark for all time. What a great storyteller. For your next song, if you want something upbeat, definitely do "You Don't Mess Around With Jim". If you want something slow, "Time in a Bottle". And you were close, Amber... it's pronounced "CROW-chee" not "CROW-chay". As for the character of Leroy Brown, I don't think it was based on an actual person... according to Wiki, Jim was inspired to write this song by a friend he knew briefly when in the Army.

I think his best song was "Time in a Bottle", Jim Croce (Crow-Chee) was a great story teller, you could also check out "Don't Mess with Jim", or "Operator", but if Amber wants to hear his best vocals, then "Time in a Bottle" is the way to go. Another great folk rock singer songwriter who we lost so young. This is the music I grew up with. Unique storyteller & ballad singer. He touches your soul. He had a lot of great hits in his short career. "Photographs & Memories", "Time In A Bottle", "Operator", "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", "I Got A Name", "Workin' At The Car Wash Blues," "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" etc.

Operator, Time in a Bottle, and I Got a Name are three great songs from Croce that show more of his singing, but all his songwriting and storytelling in his lyrics is aces, no matter the song. (Although I Got a Name wasn't one he wrote just performed, the other two he wrote as well.) Sadly he was another artist that died far too young, but he still left a great legacy.

Wow. I thought y'all had gotten to this one already. But Jim Croce is great. He was one of those people from whom song lyrics just flowed as naturally as breathing. Find his whole catalogue or discography. And from there, try Cat Stevens. Cheers.

One of Jim's fun songs. He has many other hits, most of which were more heartfelt and gorgeous, like "I've Got a Name" "Operator" "I'll Have to Say I Love You In A Song" and another funny song called "You Don't Mess Around With Jim." Great artist taken way too soon, at the peak of his career.

That album on the screen is a must. Jim Croce's Greatest Hits was a mainstay in our house growing up. Working At The Car Wash Blues and Roller Derby Queen are classics.. and more serious songs like I Got A Name, Operator, and Time In A Bottle are essential too.

Instead of folk, a better word for Jim Croce's style would be singer-songwriter. That was the name put on a whole lot of great singers who wrote their own music in the early 1970s. They tended to use acoustic instruments and have an unvarnished, pure style that's making you think of folk music.
@DJHolte
@DJHolte 3 жыл бұрын
I agree that's a better term, but there's definitely a folk influence in his music, as there is a country/western influence, imo. But Jim took whatever elements that inspired him and sort of created something new out of it. As someone else here said, one can't help but wonder what sort of music he might be making today, were he still alive. Would his sound have continued to evolve into something completely different? There's only one thing we can be sure of, we were robbed of something great when he died.

Jim Croce is one of the great singer/song writers. He can make you dance, or, he can make you weep. His songs.are all so memorable. I was crushed when he died in that plane crash. What a great loss for the music industry. I can only imagine what he would have done after age 30. Check out Time in a Bottle, Operator, I'll have to Say I Love You in a Song.
