Billy Ocean was and is an absolute class act, one of the real good guys. A fabulous example too of the best of the music that came from the Caribbean-British melting pot. This was one of his biggest '80s hits, and his first of three US chart-toppers preceding There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry) and Get Out Of My Dreams (Get Into My Car), though they all take a backseat (as it were) here in the UK to the thumping Number One smash When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going. For perhaps his best work, though, go back to his earliest stuff from the '70s , like Red Light Spells Danger - and especially the pure Motowny soulful joy that is his debut Love Really Hurts Without You. A truly glorious song. Oh, and find a pic or recent interview if you can to see what he looks like these days. Long white dreads, smile as wide as a billboard. He's just the coolest dude.

This song was released as "European Queen" and it did nothing. I bought it. A year later it was released as "Caribbean Queen" and it was No1all over the world. He had two or three big hits in the early 70's in the UK, before his career resurged in the 80's with this track.

This was around '84-'85, definitely one of the most intense and prolific times for music of the decade, fueled alot by the brand new MTV and the new format of music video. LOVED Billy Ocean! Bought this album on vinyl in the 80s! He had some great slow jams ("Suddenly", "There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry), but he also had some upbeat ones ("When the Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going"). My personal fave is "Loverboy", which is very fast-paced and funky (and the video is like something from the Star Wars cantina scene). Bit of background - his real name is Leslie Sebastian Charles, born in Trinidad and Tobago. He had a few singles in the 70s, but really took off in the 80s. He's now 71 and is still recording. He's been married to the same woman for 43 years. I don't know if he still tours.

Billy Ocean toured in 2020 and is touring in 2021 but he lives in England so the dates are all in England. Billy actually got out of recording and performing at the top of his success in 1988 to spend time with his kids. He commented that he was on the move all the time. When he returned to touring he was doing the rounds of the Brit and Irish morning talk shows and would sing an acoustic version of "Suddenly" with he and another musician adding additional guitar accompaniment. It's a beautiful version of the song.

Billy Ocean is now 72 years old and he still owns the stage like very few others. No degradation to his voice. live he has the audience dancing within a couple of bars of his first song. I am lucky enough to live in the UK where he lives and still tours every year. Incredible Artist with an incredible backlog of music and the minute he walks on stage he just generates this aura of joy which envelopes his audience. I don't know if he tours the US but if he does make sure you go you will not be disappointed for sure.

BILLY OCEAN is one of those artists who didn't get the recognition I think he deserved IMO. Singer songwriter who lit up the 70s 80s & is still touring to this day.

He recorded three versions of this: African Queen European Queen and of course Caribbean Queen. The first time he walks through the door it says European and the next time through it says Caribbean. At the very start of the video they fade from the dancers to the stairwell. If you can go frame by frame you’ll see African just as it goes off the top of the screen. You all are in the zone when it comes to choosing good music.

His voice was pure gold! This came out in the '80s. I remember dancing to it in high school. Billy was born 1950 and will be 72 next month.

The original version was called European Queen. Nobody bought it. He re-released it, changing the title to Caribbean Queen and he had a big hit! You can hear European Queen on KZbin

They actually released different versions all over the world, besides European Queen there was also an African Queen and perhaps others.

Billy's still doing gigs at the age of 71, had the pleasure of seeing him this year. & he can pronounce Caribbean correctly as he grew up in London :-)

I saw billy ocean live last year and was surprised how good he was ! A truly talented singer. And to think he was working on a car production line in Dagenham England when he released love really hurts without you!
