They got together when Cher was still a teenager. Sonny was several years older than she was. He was producing records and she was very introverted and afraid of performing. Sonny was her strength when they started & he gave her the courage to start singing in front of audience.

I was 2-3 yrs old when the show was first on and my mother always told me how I would just sit and watch the entire show without moving. As a hyper child, she said that was a rarity. I cried when I heard the news Sonny passed. I did get the privilege of seeing Cher on her tour - the husband bought me front row tickets - which was a retrospective of her career, including plenty of "the old stuff" including the wardrobe and stories about her and Sonny.

Cher was with Gregg Allmann long after she was with Sonny Bono. She married Sonny at like age 16. Look at the pics of her with Sonny and then with Gregg. It is pretty obvious. they did a musical comedy variety show together for several years. Sonny was the straight man and Cher got to deliver all the good lines. She turned out to be a very good actress as well. See "Moonlighting", "Milkwood", "Mask". "Wiches of Eastwick" and many more. I think she has an Oscar; I know she has been nominated.

Cher won an Oscar for Best Actress in Moonstruck (Moonlighting was a detective tv show with Cybil Shepherd and Bruce Willis.) Olympia Dukakis, who played Cher’s mother in the film, also won for Best Supporting Actress. I realize with three kids it would be next to impossible, but a fun side series would be movie reactions to those artists you have discovered. Cher in Silkwood or Moonstruck (two very different stories), Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in A Star is Born, or even biopics like Walk the Line (Johnny Cash) or Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen/Freddy Mercury).

In the late 60's a lot of parents were worried about the hippie culture influence on their kids. They saw the clothes, the hair, the protest movements, the drugs. It is impossible to explain just how conformist the pre-hippie era was in America. Then along came The Sonny & Cher show and every week they were cute, lovable and so happy. Their love for each other came right through the TV set into the American home.. The way they would banter and tease each other resonated with many couples of all ages. Suddenly, hippies didn't seem so bad. Everyone knew a couple of hippies, Sonny & Cher, and they were just so lovable!

And yes, this was a BIG #1 song in 1965, and America fell in love with these two, and stayed in love for about 10 years. And despite their eventual split, Cher always gave credit and gratitude to Sonny for starting her on her path. Sonny was obviously older and a well established song writer before he decided to form them as a duo.

Nope, Sonny Bono was her first husband and, ultimately, helped her with her career. He was somewhat older,, and he made her a household name. He was a singer, actor, businessman and politician. Very smart guy, and even though they had their problems, she loved and respected him until he died in that terrible accident. Her eulogy for him at his funeral/ memorial service is heartbreaking to watch.

When Cher cut loose on higher notes, with that beautiful vibrato and rounded tone, I just melt. I don't think she took any voice lessons, it was just a natural talent. This was the big breakthrough song for Sonny and Cher in 1965 that Sonny wrote , which led to the Cher we know all these years later as a solo artist. At this point, there was no idea of having their own variety show, most TV was in black and white, and it was a different universe. those of us who experienced the moment see it from a different perspective, we lived it, slowly, gradually, where today you are getting mere soundbites/video clips of what life was like back then. There were NO official "hippies" yet, not for about 2 years. It evolved, you cannot judge it from how you see them dressed here in 1965. Most entertainers and bands were still wearing suits, a few were breaking through with their own dress code. Exceptions were the Byrds and the Mamas and Papas- and Sonny and Cher, all from California at that time.

A producer from Late Night with David Letterman" had called Sonny to ask to be a guest on the show....with Cher. Sonny jumped at the idea. For a brief moment, they would be Sonny & Cher again. Then Cher had called ,all business. He helped her calm her nerves , it was anxiety about going on, but she once called David Letterman an expletive. She was afraid he and David would gang up on her. Weeks later, the producer called again to ask if he would sing with Cher.He wasn't certain if she'd want to sing with him. THE show had puled a fast one on Cher and yet she still did it. .She seen the audience tearing up and Sonny and became the strong one out of the duo. "I got you babe" is a line I've head a hundred times said by couples to each other. It's really a classic quote. After their divorce, the two reunited many years later on the David Letterman show, did this song, and really took down the house. That video is priceless. Sonny later became a U.S. Congressman and tragically died when he crashed into a tree while skiing - not affectionately known as "A Bono". I loved the Sonny and Cher comedy hour that was on weekly in the seventies when I was a kid. It was great. They complimented each other. Everyone knew that Sonny had a great song writing ability, but Cher was the one with the winning voice. Once Cher started receiving most of the attention for her own music and her voice, it started a rift between the two. An eventual breakup was inevitable. We all know Cher went on to be a super star , and Sonny slowly drifted out of music and did some acting for a while , then got into politics. Sadly In 1998 Sonny died as the result of a skiing accident.

Sonny and Cher worked for Phil Spectre a famous record producer know for the "wall of sound". His sound is exemplified in songs like "Da Doo Ron Ron" by The Crystals. Be my Baby by the Ronettes, Sonny did not want to be a singer he was interested in producing but Cher was so shy in the beginning that Sony sang with her.

One of the most touching moments of any concert is Cher singing this song at every concert she does with Sonny's voice recorded. I think she realized later in life just exactly how special of a man Sonny was.

One of the best all time duet songs, in my humble opinion. 🙂 Their voices went together well, as different as they were. They were genuinely in love at the time, from what I heard, & yad genuine affection for each other. As others have said, she spoke so movingly of him at his funeral, showing that they still cared a lot about each other, even well after they broke up.

Salvatore 'Sonny' Bono, was the song writer, promoter, producer and was a sometimes actor, Cher had all the musical talent, which Sonny brought out in her (she was an introvert). And yes, they were married, then divorced (m:1969-D:1975) and had a child together. Despite what others say here, Cher WAS NOT 16 when she married Sonny, Cher was born in 1946 and married Sonny in 1969, you do the math! They had a successful TV variety show 'The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour' for a few years and even after their divorce, they hosted 'The Sonny and Cher Show' and would periodically appear together, to sing on TV. Sonny continued working with Cher through the early part of her solo career and wrote and produced for other artists, such as The Rolling Stones. Sonny went on to become Mayor of Palm Springs California and was a U.S. Republican Congressman of California's 44th congressional district until his death. His death was the result of a skiing accident at Heavenly Valley Ski Resort, in South Lake Tahoe, CA. Sonny hit a tree and suffered massive brain injuries, leading the vast majority of skiers to start wearing helmets while skiing. At his wife's (#4) request, Cher gave a eulogy at Sonny's funeral, they remained close following their divorce. Sonny received several awards and introduced several bills while serving in Congress. Besides her long and highly successful singing career, Cher also became an accomplished TV, Broadway stage and screen actress, receiving several awards, including an Academy Award for Best Actress, for her role in 'Moonstruck'.

This was early in their career, Try to find some later from 'The Sonny and Cher' television show. All of Cher's clothes were made by the famous designer Bob Mackie, who also designed for Carol Burnette Show. Their show was an hour long variety show with comedic story episodes, guest entertainers, and of course, their own duets. It was a fabulous show.

The Beat Goes On is another great Sonny & Cher song, with one of my favorite all time bass players, the GOAT Carol Kaye furnishing that iconic bass line. A lot of people don't know that Sonny and Cher were also part of the legendary Wrecking Crew, the talented studio musicians who were Spector's Wall of Sound, and backed anybody who was anybody from the 50s to the 80s.

This is going to segue into a reaction suggestion. Sonny and Cher’s tv show was great…they modeled their banter after what Louis Prima and his wife Keely Smith did in their live performances. Louis was called the “King of Swing”, and Keely’s singing voice was incredible. Louis started out in the 1930’s, and in early 1950’s you can hear how his music morphed into rock and roll. He also voiced King Louis in Disney’s “The Jungle Book”, and his band did the music for King Louis in that. Please react to Louis Prima “Jump Jive and Wail”. Then there is a cover of that song by the Brian Setzer Orchestra that was done in the 1990’s that’s also worth checking out.

As a kid my dad and I watched Sonny & Cher every week. Sonny wasn't a great singer but he was a character, he knew what worked with an audience and had a good sense for business. Cher was a huge talent of course, and Sonny could see it, and he built up a great act featuring her knock-out talent. Sonny always reminded me of my dad, they looked similar and we both loved watching Sonny and Cher. When Sonny Bono died it reminded me of my dad's death. Sonny and Cer were long divorced but a while before Sonny died he and Cher reunited on I think it was David Letterman, and they sang I Got You Babe. It was their last performance together and so touching. I remember watching thinking how much my dad would have loved it. Thanks for the memories. :o) Another good one by them is The Beat Goes On

Thank you for doing this one. As one of the ones suggesting this, I am thrilled that you got to see one of the most iconic songs of the 60's. I agree with suggestions below to watch Cher's moving eulogy of Sonny. But I also I remember many years after they split, and they both appeared together on the same David Letterman Show in 1987, and he got them to sing I Got You Babe one more time. No longer together but still cared for each other, worth a watch.
