You can thank Cher and her producers for first introducing the world to auto-tune as an effect rather than just a way to improve a singers pitch! And, she was 52 when this song came out in 1999 and reached number one on the charts - she was the oldest female artist to perform this feat. And she's won an Oscar, an Emmy, and of course Grammy's - and, she was the first female performer to EVER show her belly-button on national TV and it was a HUGE deal at the time. She's also been a Barbie doll!! She is a true icon!

Adam Lambert's rendition of Believe to Cher was excellent...
@robdaviesprogm2 жыл бұрын
Cher definitely has a unique voice. While there are other talented women with strong lower registers (Karen Carpenter, Anne Murray, and Tina Turner all come to mind), Cher has a wonderfully distinct quality to her tone that no one else sounds like. Interesting fact about this song: When it reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1999, Cher was 53 years old. This made her the oldest woman ever to top that chart, a record she holds to this day. The previous record was held by Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane/Starship, who was 47 when "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now", a song you previously reacted to, reached #1 (in fact, she had beaten her own record, since she was 45 when "We Built This City" topped the charts in 1985). As others have mentioned, "Believe" was the first major hit to make liberal use of AutoTune as a deliberate voice effect rather than a means of correcting pitch. In fact, for a long time, this technique was known as "The Cher Effect".
@bobrob20042 жыл бұрын
And Cher's last #1 hit was Dark Lady in 1974, 25 years prior. I think she also holds the record for longest gap between #1 hits.

Finally, you are doing this song and getting to hear a more modern sound of Cher. Believe" departed from Cher's pop rock style of the time, adopting an upbeat dance-pop style. It featured a pioneering use of the audio processing software Auto-Tune to distort Cher's vocals, which was widely imitated and became known as the "Cher effect". This being one of the times the software was used to create and interesting techno sound instead of trying to improve someone's voice, which Cher doesn't need. The lyrics describe empowerment and self-sufficiency after a painful breakup. This topped the charts an became a staple at clubs as one of the most popular dance songs. Cher is head and shoulders above the rest as a true legend and one of the most unique voices around. You should do her song "I FOUND SOMEONE" and her duet with Peter Cetera, "AFTER ALL".

She once called into CSPAN to ask a question, and the anchor knew who she was immediately because of her distinct voice. She'll often call Anderson Cooper (the CNN anchor) after a story about some natural disaster, and ask him how she can send money to the people affected by the disaster. Adam Lambert has Cher in tears for his performance of this song at the Kennedy Center Honors. You should have a good listen, it's just a complete reimagining of the song. Cher is amazing in concert. I've been blessed by seeing her twice live.

Cher is a goddess. Her music is iconic. And the really cool thing is that each of these songs really feels like itʻs speaking to you. Like Cherʻs on your side through all your hardships. Someday you guys should check out another one of her songs. "Song for the Lonely." Another amazing song. And her concerts... were legendary.

1:37 The opening for Cher’s song Believe is a sample taken from Electric Light Orchestra/ELO’s 1981 TIME album opening instrumental called prologue!💜It was the first ELO concert I saw and it was the best🤗

This song was the first time almost anyyone heard auto-tune used this way and we all lost our s***. I love this song so much. it just felt so cool back in 99 when it came out. like the future was here.

I love Cher since I was a kid you have to watch the video of Adam Lambert singing. Do you believe at the Kennedy Center honors when they were honoring Cher loved his version so much she was crying
@aharon592 жыл бұрын
She was honored by the Kennedy Center awards a couple of years ago and other artists performed a couple of her songs. Adam Lambert ( who sings with Queen since he came second on American Idol ) performed this song in a live version that instantly became viral, you really should listen to that version now that you know the original.

She's a lady who is strong and beautiful and voice withstands the test of time. Another is Take Me Home both from the 90s. I also love Sonny and Cher Baby Don't Go.

Cher is a goddess. You have to do Adam Lambert's rendition of Cher's Believe for her Kennedy Center Honors tribute to Cher. He does a stripped down version that gives you chills everywhere. It's truly amazing. He made Cher cry on the spot with his tribute. Can't recommend enough. And even if you don't make a reaction video... just watch it for yourselves.

Cher was 52 in this video, 1999 was the release of this one, and now still stunning and her voice keeps getting better! Astounding ☮️😎

You should check out when Adam Lambert sung this to Cher when she was honored at the Kennedy Center. He made her cry and got a standing ovation from her and the audience. It will make you want to tear up too. Also Cyndi Lauper, a close friend of Cher, honored her by singing "If I could turn back time".

As others have recommended, react to the Kennedy Honors center version by Adam Lambert. He is one of our greatest male voices. He was on AMERICAN IDOL and blew all the other contestants away. How impressive was he? Queen heard about him and played with him on the show, then hired him to take over for Freddie Mercury. That should get your attention.

@@bilateralmind @Marja Moyer I got to see him sing live 8 months after the Kennedy Center Honors, on tour with Queen. The concert was over 2 hours & Adam never hit a wrong note, was never off key, belted out the rockers & tenderly sang the ballads. His voice is so pure. I went to a lot of shows back in the 70's, saw everyone from Zeppelin to Elvis (even saw Cher with Sonny). Adam was every bit as enjoyable (& I've been a Queen fan since the release of their first album in 1973). I was thrilled to be seeing Brian May & Roger Taylor in person & you could see their rapport with Adam. A sold out arena, people of all ages, singing along to favorites, fun & really emotional at times (especially when honoring Freddie). Anyone who walks in with reservations about Adam walk out exhilarated & singing his praises. He's truly an amazing talent. I wish everyone could hear him live. But for those who haven't, his performance for Cher is a good indicator of how good he really is. 💙☮💙

Cher has reached the Top 10 on the Hot 100 at least once during each of four decades-the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s! She great! But you really need to watch Adam Lambert singing this song to Cher at the Kennedy Center honors. It was so beautiful & moving. It made Cher cry!!!

Cher is one of the few popular singers whose voice actually improved after she was going into her 40s. Tina Turner is another. Dolly Parton is another. They all developed a richer more rounded tone. So great to see you do reactions on all three of these ladies but their early performances are just the starters. There's something very exciting about a mature lady coming into full bloom and commanding that star power. As some others have already mentioned "Moonstruck" is an incredible movie for which she won a Best Actress Oscar, and was acknowledged by the American Film Institute as the eighth best romantic comedy film of all time . She has done a number of really great film performances such as "Mask" "Witches of Eastwick" and "Mermaids". Definitely worth a watch.

I went back and rewatched the Kennedy center honors for Cher. You will probably not recognize everyone. The host is Gloria Estefan (Miami sound machine), SCOTUS Chief Justice John Robert’s is there too. It’s the same stage where heart did highway to heaven.
