J/A, love the Mama’s and Papa’s. Amber, I have a great suggestion for you for female Friday kinda referencing this group. The group to react to is Wilson Phillips, because it’s a combination of the children from this group and The Beach Boys. The lead singer is Chynna Phillips (daughter of Michelle Phillips/Mama and Papas) with the other two singers being the daughters of Brian Wilson from Beach Boys. The songs called Hold On and it’s beautifully sung by the girls. By the way Chynna looks so much like her mother. PLEASE, PLEASE react to this on Friday. Thanks again y’all.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

The lead singer, Denny Doherty, had the typical "beatnik" look of the late 50s and early 60s with the goatee and the Caesar haircut. Michelle Phillips was the free spirit of the group, Cass Elliot was the major talent (in my opinion) but the leader of the group was John Phillips. As a matter of fact he was one of the main organizers of the Monterrey Pop Festival which featured Janis and was the reason Cass was in the audience in the video you watched. The festival held in June 1967 was the beginning of "The Summer Of Love" and the beginning of the "hippie" era of the late 60s. Without Monterey Pop, there would have been no "Woodstock" I believe. Songs: "I Saw Her Again Last Night", "Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming To The Canyon)", "Creeque Alley" (a biographical song about the forming of the group), "Dedicated To The One I Love" (talk about harmonizing, this is it! It also features Michelle as lead singer), and "I Call Your Name".

I learned to shoot pool to this music in college in 1966-67. The guy who taught me would dance and sing "Monday, Monday" around the table.

They all came out of the folk music scene of the early 60's, that is why they could sing and harmonize. I believe it was the 'wrecking crew' who did most of the instrumental work for the studio recordings though. Truly they produced some of the most beautiful pop songs ever recorded. John Phillips was a song-writing genius. I miss them.

Denny really did have a gorgeous voice. And there has never been a sound like those four voices harmonizing together. It's heaven. (And as someone else pointed out, Michelle has said that she and Cass hated this song and didn't want to record it, but then were surprised when it was a hit.)

I Saw Her Again Last Night is a song about Michelle's affair with Denny, written by John. Creeque Alley tells story of the band forming and the folk rock scene. Dream a Little Dream, Words of Love, and I Call Your Name are great Cass showcases.

I bought the Peter, Paul & Mary album in 1970 for "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and ended up playing "Too Much of Nothing" about 526,394 times. But I STILL don't think that I played TOO MUCH---of "Too Much of Nothing". That chorus, the "Say hello to Valerie...." stuff....madonn'.
