Peggy Lee was the closest thing to a female Frank Sinatra. Both in her style, attitude, and choice of songs. Fever is a great classic. Her style matured over the years as did Frank’s. They both started out as big band singers in the era where big bands dominated and the band leaders were the biggest stars. Later the big bands faded and small bands such as quartets and trios were in. Eg Nat King Cole Trio. The singers became the biggest stars. At this point, Peggy was such an amazing, mature, developed singer, and big star that she only needed a duet, bass and drum. (Upright bass, not a bass guitar.)

A crooner is typically someone who sings in a smooth jazz style, more of a masculine adjective. I think the feminine term is torch singer. My favorite, which you've reacted to, is Ella Fitzgerald. Other popular females are Nina Simone and Billie Holiday.

She started out in the big band era, in the early 40's with other crooners. Her genre remained Pop and Jazz and she was one of the most famous female singers from the 40's to the 70's and beyond. She performed until the 90's, for more than 70 years. She sang the Lord's Prayer at Louis Armstrong's funeral. Her 1969 song, "Is That All There Is" was significant to quite a few young people who were embarking on spiritual quests at the time.

Even as a little kid, when I saw her on The Andy Williams Show, I remember she seemed very laid back. My father worked his way through college as a professional jazz musician. Peggy Lee was the singer in the band before she hit the "big time." Her real name was Norma Egstrom. My Dad said that she was a very nice lady--and, obviously, a great singer. When I was young, and Peggy Lee would be on television, my Dad would always say, "There's Norma." She was from a tiny farm town in North Dakota.

Be prepared. Strange Fruit can be shocking because it was about lynchings. Many radio stations refused to play it. She was very brave. God Bless The Child is a great song.

Billie holiday has been my favourite singer of any genre since I first heard her when I was 18 in 1968. I was so disappointed to discover she had already gone. My favourite thing by her is the live (long) version of Fine and Mellow with all the great instrumental solos between verses and the cracked, croaking speaking voice in her intro that blossomed into the beauty when she sang. But anything by her would do for me.

This is from1958 This is from the days before FM radio became wide spread. It was a monster hit and was played on most all AM stations. "In May 1958, Peggy Lee recorded a cover version of the song in Hollywood, which featured significantly rewritten lyrics composed by Lee herself without credit " Peggy was quite a talented lady

First I ever heard; realising it was by the same singer when I saw a clip of Peggy Lee singing Fever, was 'Is That All There Is?' ~ somehow always missed the singer's name when I heard that song :-) Not sure how old I was exactly, but I definitely remember hearing Fever for the first time when I was heavily into everything from ABBA to Siouxsie and the Banshees at the same time. Fever was a staple in Elvis’s shows too. When I saw him in 1974 my seat was high up behind the stage. Everyone screamed when he said FEVER. Only ONE TIME I WAS THE ONLY ONE IN THE ARENA WHO SCREAMED and Elvis actually whipped around to see what happened. LOL The lady next to me had binoculars and she was so excited.

Peggy Lee and Julie London were two of the biggest female artists of the 50's. In 1955 London was Billboard's Female Arist of the year. Both were devastatingly beautiful women. London a Redhead looked like a Super Model and actually did some modeling here and there. Lee was a blonde, who looked allot like the popular screen actress Mimi Van Dorn.

The old girl singers were fantastic. Peggy Lee, Julie London, Kay Starr, and not to forget the little sparrow Edith Piaf. Fever is good, but I prefer "Why don't you do right" for the little vocal inflections Peggy puts in it. I finally figured out why big bands were so big, they did not have amplifiers. If you wanted to fill a music hall full of dancers you needed a really big band. You might want to listen to Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, or Glenn Miller from that era. You won't be sorry.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Diana Krall. For me, she's sort of the "modern day" Peggy Lee. Diana Krall has won several Grammy awards among being nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy's. She has several Platinum albums now and has a style all her own, but she brings me Peggy Lee vibes.

As you both commented Fever was about Peggy Lee’s voice, very little instrumentation. If you want to heat her sing with a band, listen to Why Don’t You Do Right with Benny Goodman and his orchestra. This is a knockout jazz number. The ladies that sang with the Big Bands like Benny Goodman’s were called canaries. Don’t you love it?

Miss Piggy, of Muppets fame, was originally named Miss Piggy Lee before they cut her name down to just Miss Piggy. When Peggy Lee was in Texas she requested that the bartender make her a drink similar to one she'd had in Mexico. He did, and they named it after the full version of her name. Peggy Lee came out of the lead singer spot in one of the last incarnations of the Benny Goodman Band. She had the freedom to write or pick her own songs with him, but she was only with him for 2/3 years. He was instrumental in helping her get a good start in her solo career as well. But the material that was produced in that 2/3 years would be quite a legacy for both of them, if that was all either was known for. She had a few songs on the top 40 for about a decade and also wrote most of the songs for the movie 'Lady and the Tramp', while doing the voice of the fluffy, white pup in the doggy jail.
