One thing you have to remember with older artists is that they were trained to sing without microphones. I say Patti LuPonne (huge Broadway Diva, possibly best known as Evita), and she put the microphone down and sang so I could hear her four stories up. I think that kind of training in how to project really did make a huge difference in their tone.
@billanderson8194
@billanderson8194 3 жыл бұрын
They also didn't use auto-tune. Which in my opinion has ruined the music industry. Don't get me wrong, there are still some amazing artists in today's era. But the older songs and singers, told stories and portrayed their emotions with raw talent.
@jackwells8107
@jackwells8107 3 жыл бұрын
@@billanderson8194 I'm not sure I can agree with that 100%. Some people use autotune as a good sfx (like Cher or Foster the People with Pumped Up Kicks). However, I understand your point, and can agree it probably happens more often than it should.
@billanderson8194

@@jackwells8107 and I agree with you. When used for a specific purpose it can add elements to a song. But it's the over usage of it that I have a problem with. As I said. There are some amazing singers out there today. But the studios over use those features so you can't truly get a real feel for the singers voices. I'm sure, most of the artists out there today, when they started. Didn't have all of that so there is talent. The studios and producers just over saturate the market with it.

An interesting point, that I don't know if people today are likely to realize, is that the "boots" themselves, were a symbol of female empowerment. They were go go boots, which were typically worn with miniskirts and represented the modern '60s woman being the antithesis on the stereotypical demure 1950s woman.

Of course, Nat had been dead 20 years when this "duet" was recorded as a tribute by Natalie, who held sway as a FEMALE CROONER, in the modern era. Listen to "So Many Stars", the excellent Sergio Mendes tune that she recorded, a hauntingly besutiful song that shows off her amazing voice. Other female crooners from the day that deserve a listen: Dinah Wahington, Dinah Shore, Rosemary Clooney ( the actor George Clooney's aunt), Doris Day, and 40s era Ella Fitzgerald. All these ladies fronted big bands by the likes of Count Basie, Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey, and others. The jazz of that era was the Pop Music of that time!

Rob! You said it! Frank and Nancy had a hit duet called "Something Stupid" from 1967. Nat King Cole was the one who had a duet with his daughter Natalie singing "Unforgettable". "Go-go dancing began in the mid 1960s in the Mod era of England and America, quickly spreading throughout the rest of the world. "Go-go dancers are dancers who are employed to entertain crowds at nightclubs or other venues where music is played. Go-go dancing originated in the early 1960s at the French bar Whisky a Gogo located in Juan-les-Pins." Wikipedia.

But you also have to remember that her sound is very 1960's and not like her Father's sound which is 1940's -&- 1950's sounds... Frank Sinatra rose to fame singing big band numbers. In the 1940s and 1950s,. Nancy Sinatra's look and style were... go-go dancers, in what is now considered an iconic Swinging Sixties look.

What you're hearing in all of these old singers is the absence of Autotune. Autotune flattens the human voice and turns it into a boring series of pitch-correct but bland sounds. Before Autotune human voices had overtones and subharmonics and sometimes a whiffed note that still somehow works. Modern music just doesn't allow that anymore.

Great song. Nancy is very interesting. She clearly has the looks given that her father's wives all had waist to hip ratios of around 0.7 and that she had the genes that allowed her to do a Playboy shoot when she was in her mid-50s.
