Huge fan of the Modfather Paul Weller, and the Jam was part 1 of his career...Paul & the Jam did come out of punk but they were more into the 60s British Mod scene, following Pete Townshend of the Who but also Northern Soul & the clubs up north...there is a mix of punk, mod & soul/R&B in their sound & this song was very Motown with the opening bass line like the Supremes' You Can't Hurry Love...in 1982, Paul disbanded the Jam, shortly after this song, at the height of their UK fame & formed the Style Council, who were more jazzy, soulful & sophistipop with a heavy dose of politics, as Paul was big into the UK Wedge movement...then at the end of the 80s, Paul disbanded the Style Council after their 1989 album "Modernism:A New Decade", a very ahead of it's time house record, was rejected by their record company Polydor, and since the dawn of the 90s, Paul's been solo & released a bunch of solo albums & his legend & influence has been solidified... he's never reunited with his prior bands, despite the fan demand, because like a true Mod, he will never backpedal, only forward...and I'm happy about that, because nostalgia for fan demand & not personal unfinished business is not good I think...still, Paul Weller is amazing, and the Jam & Style Council were both amazing bands...

Paul Weller. The Modfather. A great musician who went from The Jam to The Style Council to a terrific solo career. A great rabbit hole would be The Style Council...worth the trip. One great Style Council song that gets missed often was not on one of their regular albums as it was made for a movie soundtrack. The song was "Have You Ever Had It Blue?" and was from the British movie "Absolute Beginners" with David Bowie and also featured Ray Davies (The Kinks) and Sade.

THE JAM!!!!!!!! They have SO MANY great songs!!! One of England's greatest exports (since the Beatles, and XTC)... They were riding on the edge of the punk scene at the beginning but veered more towards mod (think THE WHO) for awhile... GREAT song writers. GREAT lyrical content in every song: "The ghost of a steam train echoes down my track It's at the moment bound for nowhere just going round and round Playground kids and creaking swings Lost laughter in the breeze Could go on for hours and I probably will But I'd sooner put some joy back in this town called Malice, yeah ooh In this town called Malice, yeah". ...they deliver the lyrical bad news (w/ some hope) and good... even in the more joyous of songs... This is such a great early 80s song! (They used it perfectly in the movie "Billy Elliott", a movie I highly recommend for your film channel.) More Jam greats include "Going Undergorund", "That's Entertainment", "Start!", "Beat Surrender", and "The Bitterest Pill (I Ever Had to Swallow)". This was my go to band in the early Eighties. Saw them in concert at my local Sports Hall and was one of the best concerts I ever attended. They were magnificent. So many hits, you have to try Going Underground, Start, Down in the Tube Station At Midnight, Strange Town, A Bomb in Wardour Street, The Modern World, In The City, The Elton Rifles, Going Underground, The Bitterest Pill, Beat Surrender or Absolute Beginners. Paul Weller was and is a musical genius who still performs today. A true maestro of modern music.

They’re partly about Woking, where I grew up, which had always been a depressed place in a way. That line rows and rows of empty milk floats dying in the dairy yard was directly influenced by Woking, where there was a milk yard. The ghost of a steam train is about my childhood, because we lived close to the station, and I could always hear the trains shunting about at night. Those suburban images were very strong in my mind and a lot of people connected with it. This is actually quite a late single from The Jam - it debuted at #1 on the UK chart in February 1982. They were a hugely successful band in the UK during the late 70s-early 80s. You should listen to 'Going Underground' or 'Start!' from 1980 (they were also #1 singles in the UK). The Jam broke up in December 1982 and Paul Weller immediately formed The Style Council, who released some banging singles like 'Speak Like A Child', 'Shout To The Top', "Walls Come Tumbling Down" and 'The Big Boss Groove".

Aha. A Town Called Malice, my anthem. Lyrically, a description of life in Woking. A satellite town of London. Being on the outside of things, this town was not where it was at. Suburban misery. I had the pleasure of being born there, from a family of Londoner’s looking for a better life away from the claustrophobic city. My parents thought it was a good idea, we all moved back to London. The Jam evoked that Stax/Motown vibe we all loved!

I'm 58years old now.They were my favourite band when I was a lot younger. I also saw them live twice aged 17. They were the greatest ever live. There are albums were immense. Going Underground was there greatest hit straight in at number 1 in the charts. The Jam were a Mod band. I saw them in Glasgow Scotland. "Town Called Malice" is a well written song modelled on Motown songs. This was possibly The Jam's biggest international hit, from the trio's sixth and final studio LP, The Gift. In the early 1980s, they became the most successful band in the UK - for a few years. Paul Weller (often referred to now as "the Modfather"), principal songwriter, guitarist and usually lead singer, broke up the band at the height of their UK popularity after the world tour supporting The Gift. He started a new band, The Style Council, that was more jazzy and r & b in tone, then stopped that one in the late 1980s. He has been a solo artist since then, and continues to release new albums and tour. Weller's music career now spans more than 45 years. When The Jam started in the latter half of the 1970s, they sounded almost like a punk band, but they had a strong connection to American r & b, as well as to the British mod scene of the 1960s. On the LP Setting Sons, they covered "Heatwave", a Holland-Dozier-Holland classic. On the album All Mod Cons, they covered The Kinks song, "David Watts". The group also covered Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up" in concert. After The Jam and Style Council, Paul Weller has covered Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On", as well as Neil Young's "Ohio" in live settings. My favourite songs by The Jam include "Butterfly Collectors", "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight", "Private Hell", "Smithers-Jones", "Start!" (which derives in part from The Beatles song "Taxman"), "That's Entertainment", "Man in the Corner Shop", "Precious", "Carnation", and a bunch more. But then I grew up with these songs, and was lucky to see and hear The Jam in concert (and still have all 6 albums). And more recently have attended a couple of great Paul Weller concerts. If you want to check out Weller's post-Style Council catalogue there are many songs to choose from. You could start with relatively early ones like "Wildwood" and "The Changing Man", "Broken Stones", "You do something to me" and "Sunflower". Many of his songs benefit from being played live, and there are some strong live recordings available from over the years.

I'm from the US and remember this band! They were from the UK and were 80s actually. I was a child when they'd be on MTV. We called this new wave or punk rock back then. 😂. Also called post-punk. Some of it sounds a lil Motown too or R&B like this one here. Fun music to dance to .😊

My village has an annual summer fair, and alongside the duck race and sheepdog display they booked this unknown band called The Jam to perform and entertain the locals. But before the show, The Jam hit the big time and became hot property. Nobody expected them to honour their commitment to this little free gig in a field in the north of England, but they showed up anyway with their enormous P.A. and delivered an epic performance lol. People still talk about it round here haha.

Musically this song was inspired by The Supremes - 'You Can't Hurry Love'. Another song by The Jam called 'Start' was inspired by 'Taxman' by The Beatles. To go even deeper Paul Weller (singer/songwriter of The Jam) used the exact same intro of ELO's 10538 Overture in his solo hit, 'The changingman!! but still a musical genius and well regarded in the U.K!! His catalogue of songs is HUGE!

This was one of those songs I seemed to discover before my friends. I heard it at a record store while in college that would play everything new that came out for a group of us fans. I bought a 45 record of it and took it back and played it for everyone. It was an instant hit with my crowd. They were somewhat a punk band but I always thought they were early New Wave.

One of the things about The Jam is that they;re not only English, but their songs were about being from the suburbs outside London. At some level that hyper local focus limited their appeal to American audiences the way that a band who sang about being from Long Island outside NYC might not translate to an English audience. But their music and sound were undeniable. And their early look with the black suits and Rickenbacker guitars… classic.

The Jam was a British Rock group that formed in 1972, and were together until their breakup in 1982. They did not record their first album until 1977. The band incorporated a number of music styles in their repertoire, and had a 1960s style “Mod” stage image. Paul Weller was the lead singer and lead guitarist and keyboardist (although Peter Wilson or Steve Nichol played the Hammond Organ at times). Bruce Foxton was the bass player and second guitarist. Rick Buckler was the drummer. They were signed to the Polydor Records label. The Jam had a number of hit records in the UK during their 5-year recording career, and their greatest US success was with this single, and with the song/music video, “Beat Surrender”, in 1982. The Jam were a Mod band at the time of punk which kinda influenced their sound too. Mods came out of the sixties and wore sharp suits and dresses. This was in a time when Mods and Rockers were two rival sets of youth and music genres, often coming to blows at various seaside resorts in the UK. Mods and the Jam used the Royal Air Force roundel on their attire and drum kit which became an iconic symbol of the Mods. Paul Weller is also known as the Modfather. You notice some of those sixties mod haircuts resurface in the late seventies, with Paul having one in this video. Liam and Noel Gallagher of Oasis sported similar hair cuts to the Mods in their early career, although their music genre is different, but influenced. I think we have lost a lot of music culture and genres, sadly, in recent times. These spawned many great artists and bands. Mods, Rockers, Punk, Heavy metal, Glam rock, Disco, New wave, New Romantics, Goth, Indie, Scar, Synth, hip hop to name a few. All we seem to get these days is conveyor belt of formulaic commercial stuff. Music needs a good shake up to help good bands and musicians get noticed.

Paul Weller is a huge influence for Noel Gallagher of Oasis fame. This is from their last album but Paul Weller is still going strong 40 years later, his songs always have a powerful message. I sent you a suggestion via email a while ago for a Paul Weller duet with one of your all time faves, the amazing Amy W. Paul Weller is one of the most amazing song writers of all time. The Jam, then The Style Council and now solo he never lets you down. So varied, they were classed at the time as Mods, there was this whole Mod vs Punk rivalry back then. He hates being pigeon holed though. Songs I think you would love would be "Private Hell" "Going Underground" "That's Entertainment" and "Funeral Pyre" from the Jam. Then The Style Council "Walls Come Tumbling Down" "Speak Like A Child" and solo The ChangingMan is song writing genius, and Broken Stones. But you can't go wrong with any Paul Weller stuff. Paul Weller (AKA The ModFather) was the singer/songwriter/guitar player. Very big figure in British music to this day. But, the bass player Bruce Foxton is really pretty special too. Great player, producer. Lots of good music from these guys.

The Jam, like the Clash, started as a punk band, but soon evolved and expanded their sound. Their 1977 album In the City is very much punk, but Town Called Malice came out in 82, and was released on their last album.

These guys did next to nothing in America, but were huge in the UK during their short span. This one comes from their final studio album in 1982, by which time they had incorporated a lot more soul/R&B music influence into their sound. Early on, they were much closer to punk, but Weller wrote some great pop songs as well. Lots of variety to choose from in their discography.

When this band first came out in the '70s they were considered New Wave which was at the same time as Punk in the U.K. Their career lasted well into the '80s and they had many great hits, Paul Weller later when on to form other bands and went solo too, he got the 'nickname' of The Modfather' as he had a love of British bands of the '60s who were part of The Mod Scene such a 'The Kinks', in the very late '70s to the early '80s there was a Mod Revival along side a Ska Revival at the same time. Being born in 1960 this band was part of my later teenage years.

You guys are my favourite reactors and I could not be happier that you are diving into 70-80’s Mid/Punk/New wave. Jams main man of course was Paul Weller, known as the Mod Gid. Please listen to Erin Riffles, Erin is a toffee private school and another song That’s Entertainment. Weller went in to form the Style Council , listen to Big Boss Grove and then his celebrated solo career. His album Wild Wood is a masterpiece, particularly if you are in the mood for slower soulful gems. Without fail, the lyrics are generally spiky political/social comments or dreamy love reflections. Please listen to a song by weller covered by Skunk Annesi..You do something to me.. it brings tears. Happy listening !!

I’ve always thought that Paul Weller is one of the most versatile singer/songwriters around. I feel as though he defies genres and can effortlessly go from one to another. Some fans are strictly Jam fans, some are Style Council fans, and some are both. You guys should definitely check out Big Boss Groove, Paris Match, My Ever Changing Moods, You’re the Best Thing, Shout to the Top, as well as the soulful slow jam, Long Hot Summer. Also, there’s a lot of good music from his solo career.

Style council are the band Paul Weller formed after The Jam. Songs like Long Hot Summer and Shout to the Top are great. As for The Jam there is a lot of social commentary I their songs like Eton Rifles and That’s Entertainment . A personal favorite is Burning Sky. The lyrics are incredible . The Jam started as a punk new wave band but are associated with and influenced by the mod movement ( Weller is known as The Modfather)

Beat Surrender is another song I love by The Jam. I'd also recommend a whole bunch of songs Paul Weller did solo: Wild Wood, The Changingman, Sunflower, You Do Something to Me, Time Passes, Whirlpool's End, Uh Huh Oh Yeah and Wings of Speed. I love The Jam. I am so glad that you are getting to them and you have a lot to explore. The Jamc ame around at the tail end of the punk rock era. I've always thought of them more as part of the New Wave movement which includes Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe and XTC. The leader of this band is named Paul Weller. After The Jam ended Paul came up with a group called The Style Council which sounds nothing like The Jam. A cool jazz/pop sound.

They then morph into the Style Council with songs like Internationalists, Boy Who cried wolf, Shout to the top. Lastly, Paul Weller goes solo with songs like Sunflower, Remember how we started?, Can you heal us holy man? pink on white walls. All so good!

Liza Radley is a must, the best B-side ever written. I think he was still a teenager when he wrote it. Most of their singles are 3 mins or less, the best popular songs are that short.
