MADNESS!! One of the pioneers of ska pop! I always loved the group's goofy style, which is present in pretty much every video they did. The lead singer, Graham "Suggs" McPherson, added so much joy and fun to the band, which continues to this day. Other great Madness songs include "One Step Beyond", "House of Fun", and "It Must Be Love". The band was formed in Camden, North London, England.

Madness are a national treasure in the UK, they are so British that I can understand why their music may not travel that well. Suggs sings in his own London accent, and that's the great appeal, it's real, with no pandering to a 'mid-Atlantic' accent you hear with so many other UK artists. Other than the obvious influence of Ska music, the other main influence is Ray Davies of The Kinks, who trail blazed in the 1960's with his lyrics of London working class life and it's colourful characters. Both Ray Davies and Suggs are no nonsense balladeers, telling stories of everyday life in a direct, often humorous and creative way. The songs are strongly rhythmical, clipped and tight, designed to get you on your feet, no room for egos and flowing solo's, the whole band is about the beat.

Rap fan doesn't like song because there is not enough singing in it. This gave me a chuckle. Now you know how most of us feel about rap. This song has a really impressive musical arrangement. The verses are not being spoken; they are being sung, and the melody is not that easy to sing considering how many words and notes there are. I think because the lead singer is so chill, it sounds simpler than it is. This was the feel-good song of the 80s. When it came on the radio or MTV, everyone would stop what they were doing and start singing along. It is still one of the most iconic songs of all time.

I feel they will only really 'get' the craziness if they watch the original video with the skinhead waking up, and then the Finsbury Park one where they caused an earthquake. To still pull the crowds and have such a mixture of people enjoying the music after so many years, might help impress upon them that in the case of Madness it's about more than the lyrics or music individually

Madness are British, from London. They came out of the late '70s/early '80s Ska/Two-Tone scene (hence the strong horn section) but became more mainstream as they gained success. They specialised in funny, tongue-in-cheek songs (not all of them though), and their videos are hilarious, with all sorts of clowning around. 'Our House' is honestly a decent song, but if you live in the UK you can get sick-to-death of hearing it on the radio too often.

Madness played this song live at Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee with the backdrop of Buckingham Palace - really cool graphics were projected on the Palace behind the band. I'm with Amber I have always enjoyed this song - I was a kid when it came out. Madness are British - You two are delightfully bad at identifying British accents - that's very American and adorable of you both.... They are English - North London I believe. House of Fun (similar vibe) or It Must Be Love would be the next songs to check out. PS - Amber is looking outrageously cute today.

I can usually narrow an accent down to the country of origin, although I do believe I could identify a Liverpool accent over a few others....maybe....LOL. I grew up on a Navy base and was exposed to accents from all over the world at a very early age. Got a special place in my heart for the UK though, having a LOT of English and Irish blood in my family tree (also seems to be an American trait, tracing families... although I'll gladly admit to being wrong on that point)

I like how the lyrics at the end reveals that their house "was" where all these things occurred. It was a sweet, poignant reminiscence of a time gone by. 🥲

You really should have reacted to the official video (With Lyrics)… Their music is great but most of their Madness and fun loving stuff comes from watching them perform and play together, I would always go with the official video’s if you react to more Madness, you can always catch up with the lyrics later….xxx Now watch the video and have yourselves some fun, even if it’s not recorded for youtube….xxx

I first heard this song when I was 13 in 1983 and became an immediate and lifelong Madness fan. One of my favorite bands of all time and I still love their music now at 51yrs old. For whatever reason these guys made it BIG everywhere but, the US. For anyone that doesn't know they are one of the biggest selling acts of all time in England. They still sell out arenas in Europe and still make new albums. They tour almost every year now at Christmas time, my wife and have an Xmas tradition of going to London to catch a show about every other year or so. Thanks to covid we couldn't go these last couple years but just a few Xmases ago we saw them with about 13,000 other Madness fans at yet another sold out show in London at the O2 Arena. Not bad for a band that only managed to be a one hit wonder here in the US

This song fit perfectly within the context of the early 80s. The song was incredibly popular and was an MTV and radio favorite. They were British, in the middle of the 2nd British invasion, so that made it quirkily cool. There is something about the song that just touched everyone's button. It's a song about a house and the family in it. In a way, parts of that song could be about any of our homes. I think it is a song about a home that we can't go back to once we're grown. That's what I think touches everyone's button.

Graham "Suggs" McPherson has a great voice, it is more highlighted in other songs, perhaps. Madness were great musical sociologists, they were really impactful in sharing a view of English society that others didn't and that would maybe be different to other's social experience. They are also a visual band, and while I get that seeing the lyrics helps, their videos are part of the total experience, too. I hope you grasp their value in future songs of theirs that you review.
