Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock. "Different Drum" was written by singer-songwriter Michael Nesmith (from The Monkees) in 1964. This was Linda's first big hit in 1967 when she was only 21. She has had so many hits in her solo career such as "Blue Bayou", "You're No Good", "Long Long Time", "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Desperado" etc.

And Nesmith once again proved that the producers were egotistical control freak idiots, esp. Don Kirchner. All they had to do was change the style from Nesmith's "swing beat" version to a straight rock beat medium ballad tempo. Nesmith or Micky Dolenz could have sang it with the others doing backup vocals - it would have at least been a good album cut and they would have found use for it on the TV show, like another script when Davy Jones falls in love with yet another girl, who's not interested [if so, she must have been sick lol] But nooooo...

I'm an audiophile. I love all kinds of music and have over 10,000 songs on my hard drive. Now I discovered Linda Ronstadt when I was in high school back in the 70's. And those were the best days of music. The first concert I saw Linda Ronstadt perform was unforgettable. The new opening band was....The Eagles. Then Jackson Browne. And Linda Ronstadt headlined! I made sure I got to the concert early. it was festival seating in those days. I was front and center, about forty feet from the front of the stage. And I was awestruck at how clean and clear the bands sounded. But when Linda performed I just couldn't believe how great her voice sounded live. When she belted out certain notes, her voice projected past the monitors, and I could hear it ringing out. I admit, I fell in love. Now over forty five years later, nothings changed. I spent thousands of dollars on my audio system. And since I Iove female vocals,I designed my own cables, and chose the best speakers,to optimize vocals. And I've watched patiently, over 20 years now,on all the singing competitions on tv,in hopes of hearing the next Linda Ronstadt. Only to be disappointed. Sure there were many great singers, now proven by time.Kelly Clarkson and Kerry Underwood were both exceptional. But nothing like Linda. How does she do it? The way she sings, the emotion in her voice....she teases you, keeps you waiting, builds anticipation, and then has her way with your heart. Now before you know it,it's too late, and you're under her spell. The only other vocalist that even comes close to doing this to me,was Eva Cassidy. But sadly, she dies too early. And didn't record nearly enough songs. Linda's range of emotions in her songs ,transports me back in time, and makes me feel like everything's new again. Like I'm a teenager, about to discover the world, and myself.

I had Linda's centerfold, from Rolling Stone magazine, on my living room wall, until it dissolved into dust! And what a voice!

Great reaction to Linda’s first big hit. Top five is tough there are 10 more right behind but here’s mine.. 1) Karen Carpenter-just about the perfect female singing voice and combined with Richard’s insanely creative orchestrations the songs the put out in the 70s were some of the finest music recorded. 2)Linda Ronstadt-again a nearly flawless voice that was perfect in any genre of music she decided to try. Rock was just the tip of the iceberg for her. 3) Ella Fitzgerald-superb vocal control and another artist who could do most anything. Jazz and standards were unmatched and nobody could touch her when it came to singing scat. 4) Judy Garland-you guys probably would only remember her as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. She was the biggest movie star in America in the late 30s through early 50s then left pictures to start a career in live concert performances. Her April 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall was released as a live album and won Record of the year at the Grammys. Google “the greatest night in show business history” and the results will be about that concert. Beautiful Voice and consummate performer you guys need to do some Judy and not just “Over the Rainbow” so much more to her than that. 5)Julie Andrews--Another great actress who was even a better singer. She had a 4 octave range and could pull off anything from Christmas Carols to Opera. Great Broadway star (My Fair Lady and Camelot) and Movie Star (Mary Poppins and Sound of Music)

Keep going with 1967. So deep in quality and the best year in pop-music history, hands down. Also, this may be Linda Ronstadt's best song.

Lots of interesting facts about this song. As others have already said, written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees. He sang a short version of it in one episode of the TV show. Mike's mother invented Liquid Paper. The Stone Poneys were originally going to do a slower ballad version, but the producer decided to change the tempo and add more instruments, strings, harpsichord etc. Linda was the only member of the group to actually perform on this recording. One of my favorite songs of all time.

I couldn’t agree more that Linda Ronstadt has one of the best female voices ever. She absolutely has a beautiful voice with great range and can sing any genre. Linda is half Mexican-American and also sings beautifully in Spanish. Another Linda song to turn your attention to (If you haven’t already) is “You’re No Good.” It’s a 1974 female rock classic! Lastly, an interesting fun fact about this song Different Drum, it was written for the Stone Poneys by a member of another 60’s group you’ve reviewed on your channel: Mike Nesmith of The Monkees. As always, thanks for your videos. I can’t get enough of them! I’m a lover of great music, and they always put a smile on my face. 😁❤️

This was a song I heard growing up, when my parents would play it, and it wormed its way into my mind. Back in the pre-internet days, if you didn't have the cassette or CD, you had to depend on radio to hear songs, and this one went fallow form many years for me. I was at a party at my fraternity late, late night, shooting pool and hanging out, and this song came on the radio. I think it had been 10 years easy since I had heard it, but it brought a HUGE wave of nostalgia, and I made everyone in the room shut up for 3 minutes so I could hear it once again! I may have been an asshole, but it was worth it at the time! I LOVE this song, and was thrilled to hear your reaction. PS - on the "great women vocalist" argument; one name I've never heard you talk about, and one of my absolute favorites, is Tanya Donnelly. She was the lead singer to Belly, and alternative band that had a couple of small hits in the 90's - "Feed the Tree" and "Gepetto". Those are going to be the only songs that a broader audience might know, but her deeper catalogue, both with Belly and solo, are absolutely amazing! And her voice is crystalline pure beauty! If you're interested, I can recommend a whole slew of fantastic songs!

Linda went to the same high school I did, Tucson High. She was a few years ahead of me but I still remember her telling everybody that she was going to be a big star some day. We knew she could sing but she was just Linda to most of us. Well, she was so right! One of the best female singers of all time. And by the way, her younger brother Peter was Chief of Police in Tucson! Good job guys!
