Funny trivia. Mike Nesmith the writer of the song tried doing this while he was with The Monkees, and the producers told him "it wasn't really a Monkees song". So he turned it over to Linda who had her first chart success. (edit) And profs to y'all for doing this amazing song, AND a great movie tonight. Totally made my night.

And Nesmith once again proved that the producers were egotistical control freak idiots, esp. Don Kirchner. All they had to do was change the style from Nesmith's "swing beat" version to a straight rock beat medium ballad tempo. Nesmith or Micky Dolenz could have sang it with the others doing backup vocals - it would have at least been a good album cut and they would have found use for it on the TV show, like another script when Davy Jones falls in love with yet another girl, who's not interested [if so, she must have been sick lol] But nooooo...

Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock. "Different Drum" was written by singer-songwriter Michael Nesmith (from The Monkees) in 1964. This was Linda's first big hit in 1967 when she was only 21. She has had so many hits in her solo career such as "Blue Bayou", "You're No Good", "Long Long Time", "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Desperado" etc.

You guys should do a back to back comparison of the song Desperado sung by Linda, and then sung by Karen Carpenter. They both covered it in the 70s.

You have to hear her sing Prisoner In Disguise from the Album of the Same Name. It will give you the chills to hear her sing that song.

I'm 58 years old and I've been listening to Linda Ronstadt since I was 7,8,9 years old. I listened to my mother's 45's and 8 tracks, she had all of Linda Ronstadt's music. I've always said she had the best female voice ever. Couple songs you should check out is "Hobo" and "In my reply". You'll like them

Big Linda fan, Different Drum all time favorite, but if I had to pick greatest female singer of the seventies, I gotta go with Karen Carpenter...

Nothing to add about the perfection that is Linda. My heart breaks that Nez isn't with us. What a gift he gave us all with this magic song.

This song and Silver Threads and Golden Needles absolutely make me want to sing at the top of my voice, and I often do when I hear them, and it's really fun! One thing about Linda....her voice is so gorgeous, yet when I hear her sing, I feel like I can sing well too, and I think that makes her so relatable.

My top 5 female vocalists. 1. Linda Ronstadt 2. Karen Carpenter, 3. Anne Murray 4. Natalie Cole 5 . Ann Wilson (heart). That said, there are many great female vocalists. Some have great vocal skills but are not that great at interpreting the song to make it believable. Others have great interpretation but less vocal chops. The best singers have both.

Linda has range, control, strength, and clarity. You can hear the music without it overwhelming her voice, and you can understand every word without guessing or working hard to hear it.

Thanks for the reaction! You two are great at this!! Two more for your list: Carly Simon singing "That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be" live from 1971 and "Hello" by Walk Off The Earth featuring Myles and Isaac! Put them on your list to get to on some future Female Fridays!!

You need to listen to her singing standards on What’s New and her singing in the show Pirates of Penzance, AND her singing of her Mexican heritage music.

She is one of my absolute favorites female voices but I dont think you have ever heard K D Lang's intensely expressive huge voice, that's technical perfection , Hallelujah (live at the Vancouver olympics). or Crying the great duet with Roy Orbison or even more spectacular Crying solo at the tribute to him concert .......

YES! K D Lang's voice is like no other -- phenomenal!

I agree. Love k.d. Lang. Ridiculously underrated. Wonder what they'll say if they ever decide to react to her?
@ozmaile79382 жыл бұрын
@@danalyntuthill1538 I keep suggesting but no a partron supporter so ....I know what you mean by underrated but It is really more like "not rated" due to her hard to categorize, her musical influences , nationality , sexuality .. But my guess is that she is just as famous as is right for her. Sometimes the best dont need the celebrity status... Lot of other reactionaries have reviewed her and they are left speechless...

Eagles Glenn Frey and Don Henley were band members of The Stone Pony's. Linda encouraged them when they wanted to start the Eagles, class lady with a great voice. "When Will I Be Loved", "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" and "Love is a Rose" are favorites

The Stone Poneys, 1964-1968, were a trio; Linda, Bobby Kimmel & Kenny Edwards. They made 3 albums. Then, Linda went solo. She met Frey & Henley in 1970, when she was working at the Troubadour & hired them for her band.

I think it is one of the best performances by a female vocalist ever. I cannot imagine another singing this better, especially her opening two lines.

Of the female voices you've covered on here, the tops that I can remember right now are Ella Fitzgerald, Cheryl Lynn, Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and Donna Summer, but Linda Ronstadt and Barbra Streisand definitely have the most trained voices. If you had done Whitney Houston at her peak, she would be at the top as well. Try her live 1989 Grammy performance of "One Moment in Time" or her live 1994 rainforest benefit performance of "I Will Always Love You." There are so many more topnotch female vocalists that you haven't covered, though, particularly from earlier periods.

Ella Fitzgerald had such a happiness to it.You can close your eyes & see her smiling. Stevie Wonder also has joy in his voice;especially in You are the Sunshine of my Life & Isn't She Lovely?
