This song was co-written by one of the most successful and prolific songwriters ever: Burt Bacharach. He is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential figures of 20th-century popular music. Bacharach wrote seventy-three U.S. and fifty-two UK Top 40 hits. He won six Grammy Awards, three Academy Awards, and one Emmy Award. He had a long association with the singer Dionne Warwick; most of her early hits were his compositions. He just passed away in February of this year at the age of 94.

This song was the first #1 hit of the 1970s. It was composed by Burt Bacharach, one of the greatest composers of the 1960s. If you listen to more of Bacharach's songs, you'll get a sense of his distinct style--soft, upbeat ballads with horns. Another song by BJ Thomas which you would like if you liked this one, is Another Done Somebody Wrong Song--which came out about 5 years later. For some more of Bacharach's compositions, The Look of Love (Dusty Springfield), Casino Royale (Herb Alpert), One Less Bell to Answer, Close to You (by the Carpenters), I Say a Little Prayer for You (Dione Warwick), What the World Needs Now (Jackie DeShannon), This Guy's In Love with You (also by Herb Alpert). Raindrops was featured in the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid--one of the great westerns of the 60s, with Robert Redford and Paul Newman. It's a little different though--sung by someone else. The song remains closely associated with the movie. You should react to that movie if you have not already done so. There is a feeling of both sadness and joy in both song and movie--just like the 60s. BJ Thomas went through a period where he suffered from serious drug and alcohol problems. He died a few years ago in his late 70s from lung cancer. RIP

BJ Thomas passed away a couple of years ago. He was popular in the late 60s on into the 70s. He had two Billboard #1 songs Raindrops keep falling on my head(1970) and "Hey wont you play another somebody done somebody wrong song"(1975) He also did the original version of "Hooked on a feeling"(1969)(the best version) ya'll did the cover version(1974) months ago by "Blue Swede. He was indeed a country crossover artist RIP. This song that ya'll did today was written by Burt Bacharach who passed away recently as well. He wrote many popular songs in the 60s through to the 80s such as "Close to you" by Carpenters, Most of Dionne WarwIcks stuff from the 60s and 70s and lots of other popular music from this era. RIP. BJ Thomas also along with Jennifer Warnes sang the theme song for 80s sitcom "Growing Pains" starring Kirk Cameron and Alan Thicke ☺

Billy Joe Thomas was born in Hugo, but grew up in the Houston, Texas area and resided in Arlington, Tx until his death. "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" was from the 1969 movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford and won the Oscar for Best Song. Other hits by B.J. Thomas are "Hooked on a Feeling", "I Just Can't Help Believing", the 1966 cover of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", "Hey Won't You Play Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song", "Whatever Happened To Old Fashioned Love", and "New Looks From An Old Lover". This guy had an incredible voice like no other! He never got the respect he deserved - such a natural as a singer - many people attributed his fame to the writers of most of his hits - suggesting that other singers could have achieved the same noteriety with such great songs - but his fans knew better - he turned good songs into fantastic and memorable music! RIP Mr Thomas!

First time I heard this song was while walking through a Gemco department store in 1971 or 1972 as a child. I always remembered that moment because of the way he says "'cause..." instead of because. For some reason that always stuck with me over the decades.

If you are familiar with Burt Bacharach, then you will hear his signature sound all over this track. Mr. Bacharach in fact penned the whole movie score for the legendary movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. This song comes straight from that movie score.

This song was written by Burt Bacharach who wrote some of the most amazing songs and music of the 60's and 70's, and came back in the 90's to compose a great album with Elvis Costello. He wrote this for the soundtrack of the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". Many of his biggest hits were sung by Dionne Warwick, but the Carpenters sang his songs as did Dusty Springfield.

When BJ Thomas lived in Arlington, he went to the same little church my cousin and her husband attended. He was on the road most of the time but on the few occasions he was at church, he would favor the congregation with a gospel song ( I like the one " WOULD THEY LOVE HIM DOWN IN SHREVEPORT?") . Can you imagine his voice echoing through a small church sanctuary?

It would be something different for the channel, but it would be cool for you to react to the songs of a songwriter who made his name writing songs for other artists. In this case it would be the songs of Burt Bacharach. He wrote a ton of great songs for other artists in his career, sometimes in collaboration with Hal David.

Oh yes, a big, beautiful song from an extraordinary singer. A huge hit in 1970. It's also important to note that Burt Bacharach and Hal David, two of the best songwriters of the 20th century, wrote this great tune for the "Sundance" movie (mentioned in other comments). As for Thomas, he sang pop, country and gospel/ inspirational songs all with marvelous grace and style. He OWNS the original version of "Hooked On a Feeling" -- forget that ooga chaka mess!
