However, if you wanted to go in the "Sugar Walls" or "The Lover in Me", might I suggest ... "What Comes Naturally". It's either that, or watch her do ads for Bally Fitness during the 80s and 90s. 😅

Sheena Easton really ought to have had a far more successful career than she did in many ways. She received a whole bunch of 'big break' moments, from British national TV giving her huge exposure through "The Big Time" (back when there were only 3 TV channels to watch, no cable, no internet to compete), through to her friendship and collaboration with Prince, one of the biggest stars of the decade. She even got to do a Bond Theme, which is a huge deal that very, very few artists get to do. Yet sadly, she never quite managed to capitalize on any of it beyond just a couple of tracks most people would remember. A large part of it, in my opinion, was the song choices. It was an era when first punk rebelliousness came to the fore, then the glitz and glamour of New Romantics, and then the angst of Goth and Grunge. And Sheena chose to release a song about waiting for her man to come home from his 9-5 job that could have come straight out of the 1950s. It was the opposite of all of the things that worked, and without the heavy publicity from the BBC it would probably never have even gotten airtime. I always hoped that the interaction and advice from Prince would help her find that 'spark' - let's face it, his music oozed with all three things - rebellion in his often shocking material, the new romantic styling of his look, and plenty of emo angst and rage in many of his songs. But it just never happened. If Sheena had sung about a Raspberry Beret it would have been a song about a mundane shopping trip to C&A or similar, instead of the song of rebellious love Prince made. Compare her the the female artists that did well in the era, especially in the UK, such as Toyah, Souxsie, Kim Wilde, Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, Debbie Harry, Madonna ... and look at how much rebellious, anti-stereotype, girl-power was coming to the fore. Sheena just had the right voice but completely the wrong songs and vibe.

Sheena is an amazing singer, I feel like she's very underrated too. Everybody knows 9 to 5 (Morning Train), most people write her off as just being another pop singer but she's got so much more than that. "For Your Eyes Only" is a must (another James Bond theme), and if you enjoyed this one then you have to check out "I Wouldn't Beg For Water" as it's very much the same style of song.

Sheena Easton was the first Reality TV break-out star Born in Bellshill, South Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1959, Sheena Orr (her maiden name) earned a scholarship to attend the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. While taking classes from 1975 to 1979, she sang at night with a band. She was married for a short time in 1979; though she divorced her husband, she decided to keep her new last name, Easton. A tutor suggested that she audition for Esther Rantzen, who produced The Big Time for the BBC. The Big Time took people with potential in a particular area and helped them try to achieve fame or make a career while a camera crew documented their lives; earlier subjects had included a gymnast aspiring to be a trapeze artist, a comedian, and a prospective professional wrestler. Easton took a shot, and was chosen for the show. The rest is history!
