This song was on Teena Marie’s debut album in 1979 Wild and Peaceful, as one of the first white artists signed to Mowtown Records (historically a black music label) Berry Gordy (founder of Mowtown Records) was so concerned about Teena being judged for her appearance he refused to put her picture on the album cover (its a picture of clouds and the ocean) reasoning that he simply wanted people to hear her music first instead of her race (years later he admitted this was a mistake) as her songs were funk/soul/r&b (she later had some rock hits too) they mostly played on urban radio. Berry miscalculated because it turned out people didn’t care that Teena was white and black people bought her records and flocked to her shows, to this day she’s considered an icon especially in the black community, RIP to Teena Marie, she’ll never be forgotten.

Actually Lady T wasn’t one the first white artist to be signed by Motown There had been a few dating back to the 60s What she was though was Motown’s most successful selling white artist Motown had even signed a group fronted by Thomas ( Tommy ) Chong of the comedy dual Cheech & Chong🙂
@Musicvegan016 ай бұрын
@@162berto Motown also had a couple of sub-labels in the early 1970s called Rare Earth & Melodyland that had primarily white artists. The band Rare Earth was on Rare Earth Records and so was Meatloaf (before he became famous) in a group named Stoney & Meatloaf. Melodyland was focused on country music, Pat Boone (yes that one, Debby's dad, lol) was signed to it for a brief period. The most successful country act on there was probably T. G. Sheppard. Tommy Chong didn't front a group, he was the guitarist in Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers. That is a mixed race group, but Bobby is Black and he's also the guy who told Berry Gordy about The Jackson 5. In the 1960s there was a white female singer on Motown named Chris Clark. Some of the Funk Brothers (Motown session musicians) were white too.

This is just one of the reasons, that Rick James is my hero and idol,2nd only to Stevie Wonder aka THE God of ALL Music. !!! Rick wrote,produced & arranged this entire album, after Berry Gordy had pretty much gave Teena this last chance to get a hit or be dropped from the label ! Rick did what all those other great writers & producers on Motown couldn’t do . Rick James doesn’t get the credit he so richly deserves ! Teena Marie is also highly underrated as a singer,songwriter,arranger and producer, as well as multi-instrumentalist !
