Great reaction! I first met Gene on the Asylum tour. We got a room in the Detroit hotel Ponchartrain, top floor - we thought kiss would be staying on the top floor but they chose the second to last highest floor. Pre show when we were jamming Detroit rock city too loud, the Management called us and said that the band appreciated our taste in music but that we had to turn it down - lol! Then as we were in the elevator going down to the show, it went down one floor and stopped… Doors slowly opened and there wasGene, long black leather jacket black leather pants. He walked in carefully checking us out to make sure we weren’t going to do anything creepy but I was Stone cold silent in shock! We went all the way down and my friend, Scott, kept punching me in the shoulder telling me to say hi and get his autograph. Finally, as Gene was waiting by the revolving doors for the limo and we’re standing there looking straight out about 15 feet away… my friend finally got fed up with my starstruck paralysis n said “you either say hi and get his autograph or I’m going to!” Finally I stammered “Mu Muh muh Mr Simmons”. He casually turned to me and said “yes“ I said “ would you mind signing this album for me?“. He said “sure, come on out to my limo with me“ because the limo happened to be driving up at that time. I’m walking out to his limo with probably 150 fans on the other side of it wondering why the hell was this guy walking with Gene to his limo?!! I thought to myself man, just get a freaking room at the hotel dummy! 😂 after the show we went back to the hotel to the bar at the top and got a chance to hang out with the band and even get an autograph from the late Great drummer, Eric Carr. What an era!! Listen to the end closely including the fade and you’re talking full force Paul Stanley vocal acrobatics!

This was a big hit single for Kiss in 1985 from the 'Asylum' album... it only sold gold (half million copies) in the US during the non-makeup era of the band... but 'Tears are falling' was a hit on MTV and Kiss pushed 2 more music videos from the record - 'Who wants to be lonely'... and the cheeky "Uh! All night" ... Thus, Kiss was selling out arenas on tour. They played Madison Square Garden in NYC on that 1985 tour for the first time since the original Kiss in 1979 w/ makeup on... (Kiss took off their makeup in 1983 for the album 'Lick it up'... and sales jumped as the band started rebuilding their fanbase in the 80's... The next album 'Animalize' sold platinum as well and the crowds were getting bigger w/ every tour) For the 'Asylum' album in 1985, Paul Stanley was fully in charge of Kiss... Gene Simmons felt lost without his makeup persona in Kiss and started losing interest in the band; he focused more on his acting career in movies but still contributed songs to Kiss albums (which Paul Stanley called 'junk') like 'Secretly cruel'... and 'Any way you slice it'... sung by Simmons, which were basically forgotten Kiss songs. The good news was that Kiss had a powerhouse drummer Eric Carr (who had joined Kiss in 1980 replacing Peter Criss) and a new lead guitarist Bruce Kulick (who joined in 1984 after lead guitarists Vinnie Vincent and Mark St. John had served their time in Kiss) and the non-makeup Kiss sounded great live and the band was stable for the first time in years... But w/ Gene Simmons frequently absent from the studio, it fell on Paul Stanley to produce the album and oversee recording and session bassist Jean Beauvoir (who played on the 'Animalize' album) was called in to play on a Kiss album again. Kiss fans still remember Eric Carr (drums) and his explosive drum solo during Kiss concerts was a highlight of the show. When Kiss filmed a Detroit show for MTV live in concert in 1984 ( and concert video 'Animalize live') on the 'Animalize' tour, Gene Simmons was sporting a wig onstage because he had cut his hair short for a movie role... Paul Stanley said he was frustrated because Gene was not doing the work but demanded his share of the profit$ from Kiss, while Stanley was working hard to write hit songs... recording the tracks and handling the band's singles promotion... stage designs... costumes... interviews ... tour bookings... and finances. It was also apparent by 1985 that Paul Stanley was the star of the non-makeup Kiss... Gene (without his 'demon' makeup persona), Bruce and Eric were just not as prolific or charismatic for MTV ... The costumes were rather feminine because that image was what sold on MTV w/ bands like Ratt ... Bon Jovi ... Twisted Sister... as well as superstars like Prince... Duran Duran... etc. (Even Judas Priest emerged in 1986 for the 'Turbo' album sporting rather large, colorful leather outfits) Paul Stanley was prominently featured on all their 80's music videos and Kiss was successful during that era w/ subsequent albums 'Crazy nights' in 1987... 'Hot in the shade' in 1989, because of Paul Stanley's songs like 'Crazy, crazy nights' ... 'Reason to live' ... 'Rise to it'. Gene only started coming back more prominently on a Kiss album in 1992 ('Revenge') because Kiss needed a harder image and sound... They also tragically lost drummer Eric Carr in 1991 to cancer... But the non-makeup Kiss had run its course by then as 90's grunge rock put their popularity in decline.
@nancysmith86264 ай бұрын
Love this history! I would add - even though grunge killed this genre by the early 90s, KISS did a "full makeup" reunion/comeback tour in the late 90s that was supposedly one of their final tours (we all know how that went). I was able to get tickets through friends and go to the concert when it came through my town. I was not a huge fan of the band, but went because I felt like it was a great chance to see a notorious piece of rock and roll history. It was a good show and I had a great time once I got into it. But, Gene Simmons fell onstage - he said it pissed him off because he had only fallen onstage a handful of times in their entire career. That's a miracle - those high, high-heeled boots were something else. I don't know how they even stood up in them!
@flyingburritobro684 ай бұрын
@@nancysmith8626wish they had never reunited and put the makeup back on. They had the best sounding snd most talented band with Kulick and Carr and later Kulick and Singer. Revenge was one of their best albums and Carnival Of Souls was interesting too
@sumonjamal16534 ай бұрын
@@nancysmith8626 Kiss did the 1996/ '97 Reunion tour in makeup because 90's grunge had effectively decimated the non-makeup Kiss career... Despite a top 10 charting gold selling album 'Revenge' in 1992... concert ticket sales had dropped significantly on the 1992 - '94 tour... They even recorded a grunge album 'Carnival of souls' in an attempt to appeal to 90's audiences. Thankfully, the 'MTV Unplugged' show brought Ace Frehley and Peter Criss back into Kiss and that record was shelved (It was released in 1997 and sold decently w/ zero promotion) The Kiss Reunion tour brought in the big buck$$$ for sure but did little to boost Kiss' record sales... Their 1998 album 'Psycho circus' only sold gold again and the original Kiss ran their course in 2000/ '01.

Gene. “He reminds me of the brother from Everybody Loves Raymond” That was the best laugh I’ve had all week 🤣🤟

The way Paul is dressed, looks like KISS went on tour with the GO-G)'s and it rubbed off.

Mid to late 80s was KISS glam era. Soon that faded and they returned to the harder edged sound, leather clad outfits

KISS took a lot of heat for making this video in the fluorescent trend. It was almost a Billy Squier moment.

Saw Kiss on this tour in 1986. The Hooters opened. Lot of fun.

when this album came out and bruce started laying down the solos (you really need to listen to any way you slice it and uh! all night) they became a true power house line up eric carr was pounding the hell out of the drums and it felt like kiss was hungry again and the follow up album crazy crazy nights is real under rated because when hot in the shade was released it put kiss back into being one of the biggest bands in the world this area was really fun

I associate this song with Hurricane Gloria. This hit the airwaves right before landfall. I was 13.

I was never a big fan of the colorful KISS outfits brought on by the 80's. I preferred the black and silver. Always gave them more of an edge. 💋

I talk, I'm sorry. Nerve touched. Love you guys, loving my guys. Let me say, my first time seeing them live in Charlotte, Hot In the Shade tour, I was a little sad, they did have the huge Sphinx head which was very cool, all four Paul, Gene, Bruce, and Eric Carr standing side by side in it's mouth, very cool, but my first KISS show, I wanted to see the famous logo behind them. When they came back out after last song, the Sphinx lowered and the KISS logo came up....I was complete :) Sorry for the "journal" haha Thanks again.

One of their best, I think. I love this era of KISS, even though some band purists think they went "too 80s" here. Music like this is enjoyable because the songs are written and structured so well. Then you have great production and performance to add to that. It's what's missing in today's music.

Some of the kiss songs Gene Simmons sang lead vocals on like Domino, unholy, I love it loud, cold gin and rock and roll all night will give you a new perspective on his serious deminor. Welcome to the KISS army!
