Oh dangggg Son House! This is how you know you have the coolest subscribers, they’re really giving you best music education, here. My exposure to Son House was when I took jazz history in college. We obviously studied American jazz not blues, but since blues is the root of jazz we touched on some of these early blues artists. Blues is all about telling a story. Lead Belly, Mamie Smith, and Blind Lemon Jefferson are some other artists who come to mind. They were even before Son House.

Another blues artist to check out is Howlin Wolf. "Smokestack lighting " is one of he the greatest blues songs ever. Not aa pristine blues as Son House, bit still all blues. You have every reason to feel proud. This is history and men like this directly influenced the British bands of the 60's. Dig deeper into Led Zeppelin's catalog. There are some songs where Page is practically playing exactly what you're hearing here. Some call it stealing, I call it a tribute to the greats who influenced them.

@@nickface55 I was never a huge fan of the major players on the grunge scene - give me the Afghan Whigs, Archers of Loaf, or Dinosaur Jr. any day of the week. I'd love it if J & A would react to any of those three and have pushed for Debonair or Honky's Ladder from the Whigs, but there's not enough demand from their audience. I also think they'd love Bellbottoms by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion or Buena from Morphine (come on, that band was bass, drums, and sax only - three things they love).

Al Wilson from Canned Heat found out Son House was still alive and wanted to interview him in the mid sixties. Tracked him down and found he was drowning in alcoholism. He sobered him up and taught him how to play his old songs again. It led to the Son House revival in the 1960s. Son House went on to record some more records and Blind Al Wilson played guitar and harmonica on them.

The Blues is born out of slavery, prison chain gangs and the Depression era. If your down and out for any reason you definitely got The Blues. This Guy is one of the founders of recorded blues. He influenced greats like Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. Here are a few more suggestions for this older blues style. For a modern Bluesman Try Seasick Steve - Walkin’ Man. Sonny Boy Williamson II - Born blind. Cecil Gant - Wake Up Cecil, Wake up. Bessie Smith - Nobody Knows You When Your Down and Out. Snooks Eaglin - I Went to the Mardi Gras.

Robert Johnson: He is a legend!!! Son House is often credited as being a major influence and informal teacher to Robert Johnson. According to popular accounts, when Johnson was young, he would watch Son House and Willie Brown play at juke joints. Initially, Johnson was not very skilled, but after disappearing for a short time (which led to the famous crossroads myth), he returned as a vastly improved guitarist. Son House reportedly expressed amazement at Johnson's rapid improvement.

“It didn’t hurt so bad, until the good lord’s sun when down, when I got home, I didn’t have no one to wrap my arms around.” That line always gets me. It’s so relatable to being lonely. Son House, Lead Belly, Howlin’ Wolf, Memphis Minnie, Ma Rainey, Ethel Waters, Blind Lemon, Mississippi John, Robert Johnson, Pinetop Perkins… (the list goes on) they were all the OG’s, and responsible for the music you hear today. The reason Son House, and a lot of these artists are old is because these record producers learned that Rock N Roll was getting its inspiration (and literal songs in many cases) from these relatively unknown blues artists that lived in the south and played small bars. They rushed to find them and record them before they passed on. Elvis, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones all covered blues songs starting out. Unfortunately, many of these great artists died penniless, and many never got credit until much later. In fact, “When the Levee Breaks” by Led Zeppelin is a Memphis Minnie song. Check that one out on your Female Friday’s. Or Ma Rainey is another great. There were so many great female blues artists back then. When Rock n Roll took over, they didn’t want females singing blues songs I guess.

Great reaction guys! I love the resonator guitar in this one. If you want some old school blues, try Blind Willie Johnson. Though he did not play a resonator, he was a bottleneck slide legend. Led Zeppelin covered a couple of his songs, In My Time of Dying and Nobody's Fault But Mine. Bob Dylan even covered In My Time of Dying on his first album. A good start would by God Moves on the Water from 1929. It is about the Titanic. Nobody really knows how he got his sound, but he was very influential.

I can remember hearing this for the first time - in the 60s. I was stunned. This is one of the most historically important tunes ever, as well as one of the most emotionally affecting. Note - the guitar hook has been reworked by a dozen other players, and ended up in “Voodoo Child.” Also - the second guitarist is undoubtedly Alan Wilson, of Canned Heat, who rediscovered House and played with him on his Columbia recording. The Heat were part of a “blues Mafia” that included the legendary John Fahey, an artist whose work is worth several vids, and Ph.D dissertations, on its own. Further, the producer of that album was John Hammond, the A&R man who discovered Robert Johnson, Count Basie, Bob Dylan, and SRV. Once you go down the blues rabbit hole there’s no way out.

One line was "She's laying on the cooling stone". Back in the day, before the late 1930s, the government project "The Electrification of Rural America" took electricity where it hadn't been before. Mostly in the south and rural Midwest. So mortuaries with no electricity/refrigeration had a slab of stone, usually marble, used as a cooling stone to slow down mortification until the person was embalmed. This song is so old it references "the cooling stone". Ask your grandparents about that, Amber. You're a rural girl.

Son House and Robert Johnson and other Delta Bluesers were a huge influence on the urban (Chicago) blues of the 60s and 60s, mainly Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, BB King etc that was leading to the blues rock music of the Yardbirds, the Rolling Stones, the Animals, Cream, and especially Led Zeppelin and also Black Sabbath. And from there Heavy Metal was born - most Metal genres are a fusion of blues and classical music. While this song dates back to the 1920s this recording of Son House was a very late one, when he was already over 60.

This is one of my all time favorite songs. Believe it or not Son House was a shadow of himself when this was recorded. He hadn't been playing for years and didn't even own a guitar when he was found working at a train staition by blues afficionados. He has to relearn how to play before he began touring during the 60s folk and Blues revival. I can't imagine his intensity in his youth especially after this intense performance. In his youth Son was both a preacher and a blues man. His song Preachin' the Blues is a classic song about the dichotomy of playing "the devil's music" and also being a preacher. Another great really bluesman to check out is Bukka White. He was BB King's cousin and he played in a style similar to Soon House while still being unique in his own right.

So happy to watch you listen to these old blues masters. I concur on listening to Robert Johnson. He was found by a man doing recordings around the country, and that is pretty much the only reason we have any of his recordings. Listen to Crossroads which is a classic.

I was thinking of some obscure popular songs that they really played in the 70s and 80s.... "Bertha Butt Boogie", "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road", and "Car Wash", ... Car Wash was also a movie... and for a movie, "Dog Day Afternoon". . thanks y'all!

Thank you for checking out some old school blues. Please do Robert Johnson Cross Road Blues, Sweet Home Chicago and I Believe I'll Dust My Broom. His songs have been covered by so many others. Elmore James came along a little later and was known as the king of the slide guitar. Check out It Hurts Me Too (later covered by Foghat and Eric Clapton among others) and The Sky Is Crying (covered by SRV). There are so many other blues artists to cover. It's a very deep rabbit hole.

If you want to get into some real primal blues, you've got to hear John Lee Hooker. "Boogie Chillen'" & "Boom Boom" are good songs to start with. You've seen John Lee in The Blues Brothers movie. He was the street musician singing while the brothers were on the way to Aretha Franklin's diner to recruit Matt Guitar Murphy & Blue Lou Marini.
