I have so much respect for this band. They were getting really big when the drummer, Rick Allen, was in a horrible accident that lost him his arm and instead of continuing on with a different drummer they basically told him we'll wait until you're ready and we'll figure it out. If you look at the drum kit you'll see all the modifications that was done to accommodate the lost of the arm. I really recommend their songs Pour some sugar on me, Photograph, Hysteria, Animal, or Bringin on the heartbreak.

Basically, the song is about a woman who's a player. He wants her, but he sees how she treats the men she's with. She doesn't commit. She just plays, then drops them when she's done. But he can't help wanting her anyway. So, when he says, "I don't wanna touch you too much baby, 'cause making love to you might drive me crazy," he's trying not to be the next broken-hearted guy she leaves in her wake. It's his struggle, between wanting to love her and not wanting to get crushed.

This is their comeback album. Pyromania put them on the map and they toured extensively in support of it. Fame got the best of each member. After the Pyromania tour, Rick Allen lost his arm in a crash and Steve Clark’s alcoholism was ramping up. Once they got everyone in shape, including setting Rick up with electronic drums, they went into the studio again. Mutt Lange, their producer kicked their asses. He didn’t want a Pyromania II, he wanted something new. And he got it. The rocking Def Lepp was still there, but they really amped up their songwriting, harmonies and production. Killer band from day 1.

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but one of the really cool things about the album this song is from (Hysteria) is the harmony vocal design. All five band members provided vocals, and producer Mutt Lange layered each of their voices 25 times for the harmonies. So when you hear those big choruses with all five band members singing, each layered 25 times, you're hearing 125 voices. Also, it's worth pointing out that this was all before auto-tuning. When you hear these guys harmonize, on the album or live, they're harmonizing for real. That's talent, man.

The song was originally brought to them by their producer Robert John “Mutt” Lang. It originally was a “country” ballad. Love Bites is Def Leppard’s only #1 hit in America.

This is my favorite piece from them. So much splendor and bittersweetness throughout the song and it really evokes that feeling of being in love but torn by some pain. Joe's unique voice is so heart piercing and then when all the guys come with that harmony, it's all so deep, layered and powerful, particularly Rick Savage who has an incredible deep and open voice...like a lion... that complements Joe's lead so well. Then they drop back down to softness, like falling into clover, giving just enough pause to reflect on the experience. Same with the interlude of the guitar solo like dreamily floating on dark flowing water while pondering it all. They are really genius at musical phrasing and incorporating numerous variations throughout one song so that it never gets boring, but rather is like riding waves and at each crest you are treated to a new breathtaking vista. I like so much of their music but the other piece that for me matches this one, while spinning the experience positive is "Hysteria"

After the car crash took his arm, Rick Allen came back to the studio where the band had been recording. Nobody ever talked about replacing him or what they were going to do. They were just happy he was back and he'd just go into a room by himself....and spent his days figuring out how he could drum with one arm - setting up to drum with his feet, and practicing day after day. The band admits now, they were just happy he was doing something, but in the back of their minds of course he could never do what he once did. One day he called them into the room and proceeded to play one of their hits in their entirety on his new setup using his feet. By the end all of them were in tears.

One of the greatest ballads ever! I was fortunate to see them this past Summer for the last show of the 2024 Stadium Tour! It’s an all time fave tune for me.

Def Leppard was my ultimate favorite rock band back in the 80's/90's. There were just no bad songs on their albums.
