When I was an adolescent young girl, I was obsessed with DL. Their album "Pyromania" was out. I was in love with Joe Elliott. My older brother had the Pyromania tshirt. It was ripped and worn out. He wrapped it up and gave it to me as a Christmas present, one year. When I opened it up, I started screaming with excitement. I'm 48 now and I can still remember how excited that made me when I opened up that box. 😂🤣

Rick Allen lost his arm before they started production of the Hysteria album. He fully expected the band to continue production of their songs without him; replacing him. But they promised him, they would wait for him to recover, wait for him to learn to drum only using one arm... and then went on to produce their most famous album EVER! Every song the the Hysteria album is a Number One Hit Song!

The hallmark of a great guitar player and band is the tone of their guitars, these guys bring it in buckets full, as a guitarist I’ve always chased down the holy grail sound, it not easy or cheap but it is obtainable, this band has it, also fantastic vocals, harmonies and the songwriting.

The album and this title song have hallmark production of Robert John "Mutt" Lange - the rich vocal harmonies and the how the guitar parts were recorded. Mutt Lange also produced records for AC/DC, Foreigner, Huey Lewis and the News, The Cars, Bryan Adams and Shania Twain along with many others. Mutt and Shania were married for awhile. - Remember - When you're Smiling, the whole world smiles with you. Cheers,😎

What was amazing is the vocal layers are studio "trickery" in that they are layered, but much of the backing vocals were done by the guys who would be singing them live, notably Savage and Collen, who both have fantastic voices. The backing layers are cut with Elliott, too, but the depth is the real deal backline vocals, not just Elliott layered 10 times

Jay & Amber, as ravenous Def Leppard Fans (like me), I have to inform you that the band is putting out another album on May 22, called "Diamond Star Halos". I've heard a couple of songs from it, and.... yeah, it's amazing. As for your next Def Leppard song, I had to review the eight titles you've already done so I don't recommend something you've reacted to. You can do "Foolin", "Animal", "Armageddon It", "Rocket", "Make Love Like a Man", "Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad", or "Stand Up (Kick Love Into Motion)". To answer your question - Def Leppard's big breakout album was in 1983, Pyromania. It was one year later that Rick Allen lost his arm. Their follow-up album, Hysteria (which this is the title track of) ,was released in 1987, by which time Rick had been able to perfect one-armed drumming.

The album was supposed to come out in 1986, but singer Joe Elliott came down with the mumps, of all things. (It's much worse for adults than children, as I understand.) Rick had reported back for duty at the end of 1985, which is pretty impressive. The album was the last for guitarist Steve Clark, who drank himself to death during the production of the next album. (The band had given him six months off to get sober. It didn't work, sadly.)

Long live the lep!! Loved them ever since day one. Hysteria is probably the best song from the best album of the 80s!!! Beautiful song, never ages !! Pity you couldn't see the video. Also Rick had 1 arm

Love!! ❤ I was at the Hysteria concert in (I think) 1988 at the Hampton Roads Coliseum. Hubby was in the Navy, we lived in Virginia Beach (stationed in Norfolk). He was deployed, and my brother and sister showed up to visit me unexpected. Somehow we were lucky enough to win tickets they were giving away on a radio station. They were only giving away 2, but we talked them into 4 when we told them why. It was AWESOME!!❤

One of the rare releases that doesn't have a bad song on the entire thing. I remember buying the new cassette when it came out , not having to FF to the next good track in the car was a first just crank it up and rock out without touching it.

Good things takes time and the time they waited for his drummer to recover from the accident paid. I remembered heard the news when this happened. I couldn't believe it cause they had Photograph video on MTV and he had his two arms. Then when the released the album, the first video i remembered to watch was this song. I went on shock when i saw him playing the Electronic drum with only one arm. This was amazing..this song became one of my favorite ever and we made a cover in a band i used to play with my pals in those days. I really love the arangement of this song. It was so much fun trying to sound similar. Def Leppard is one of my favorite 80's band.

This concert, Hysteria in the round, was my second favorite concert of all time. Only behind Queensryche Operation Mindcrime. This was Rick Allen’s comeback after his accident. The crowd went wild when he came out and got on the drums. It was also the last concert I saw with Steve Clark before he passed 😢. Love this whole album! 💕🎶🎸🎶💕

I agree. I was at 1 of the hysteria tour shows, (I had a front row seat) and I also seen 1 show of the operation mind crime tour, & I definitely liked it better than the def lep show. even though my seat wasn't very good. The best live shows I ever went to were iron maiden, & DIO was really good live.

To me, it is obviously a love song - the protagonist is consumed by another person not present. That said, there can of course be a spiritual side to love and sexuality. And this song touches on it, it kind of walks the line between desperation and bliss. A true gem in my book.

Rob Squad, you are amazingly insightful. I've listened to that song a hundred times over the years, and I've never deconstructionist it the way the two of you did. I groove to it of course but never paid much attention to its significance. You allowed me to hear it in a brand new way. Thanks for the gift

I read a article years ago. Rick Allen was starting to learn the new drums. He said to Phil and Steve “This is Hysteria”. So yes it is a spiritual song.

I’m glad you spoke of the music of Def Leppard. The two guitar players always play two different parts at the same time, never playing the same chords while the bass sets the back rhythm. Great sound mixing and engineering during recording the songs.

Us Gen X had the best decades people omg I wish you kids today could have what we had it was truly amazing times, no cell phones no computers out all day never home hanging with ur friends, music , yes lots of partying but the music was amazing I cry when I here certain songs that take me back to the 80s and 90s I'm 49 now and I was a kid in the 80s and a teen in the 90s , the only other generation I would love to experience is the 60s and 70s but I'll take the 80s and 90s and put them.up against any two generations.

One of the best lyrics ever “dream me off my feet” Can never listen to this song just once l, it has to be repeated at least twice back to back. To me the lyrics on the surface are about meeting a lover that you cannot resist because the fire is so hot. It may also be on a spiritual level because they connect in that way it’s makes the attraction so much more intense.

Another banger by this group. Rick Allen is amazing and I think it’s a testament to the brotherhood of these guys that they all supported each other through the decades. Still rocking large venues and recently inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame Def Leppard are just a great band!

I get a very strongly emotional reaction to this song. It’s the guitar playing for me, there is so much feeling and heart in it. Steve and Phil together were amazing and Phil and Viv still are. If you get the chance to see them in concert I highly recommend it. If you want to hear a really different side to Def Leppard try Slang. They tried to go in a different direction but it didn’t play well for some of their fans but I love it.
