@@FUBAR1986 Back in the early and mid 70s there was a genre called gospel rock. It started with Jesus Christ Super Star and Godspell. There were also singles as Spirit in the Sky, Norman Greenbaum; My Sweet Lord, Gearge Harrison; Jesus on the Mainline; Ry Cooder; Put Your Hand in the Hand; I'll Take You There, Staple Singers and many others.

@@adriannecote5319 Yes, I had to get approval when I brought music to school initially. It was like that from 1-12 grade. However, I eventually won them over. I brought music to play during assignments. Faculty saw class grades and attendance improve. This was in the 70's. I was the first to use music, slide projection, costumes, and tools for presentations at school. My best was in high school. I played "Flight Of Icarus" by Iron Maiden in English Literature class along while describing Henri Matisse's corresponding art piece. A comparison and contrast of the sound and visual. Music is my passion. It gets me thru life. Apologies for this lengthy response. Peace.🙏

IMHO this is the greatest pop/rock tune with a "religious" theme. And Patrick Simmons (I believe it was him) stated in an interview that the band really didn't have any desire to promote any sort of religion or creed--they just loved the tune and wanted to do their own version of it. (I also think this might be the Doobies best tune overall!!)

From their 1972 album Toulouse Street, this is one of the few songs they didn't write. They heard The Byrds cover this song in 1969 and decided to do their version. Their version is distinguished by guitarist Pat Simmons, who sang lead on "Black Water", preaching the vocals "Jesus , He's my Friend". This song made it to Number 35 on The Billboard Hot 100's. Such a great tune, with great guitars, organs and vocals, and great tempo that just keeps you interested. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦

Back in the day this was one of the first songs used by what the older people called the “hippie Jesus freak” movement. As the younger generation sought a way to express their beliefs outside of the mainstream culture this is what they used. They had the faith but wanted to express it in their own way. If you haven’t already heard it another of the early songs was done by Brewer and Shipley called “One Toke Over The Line.” On a different note I once saw a special on tv about the Doobies as they were called that showed everyone who’d been involved up until then with the music of the band. If I remember correctly at that time which was about fifteen years of the band performing they had around seventy people that had come and gone with some being there multiple times as their careers allowed.

The first time I heard the phrase, JESUS IS JUST ALRIGHT WITH ME. It came from a stoner in high school. I didn't know what he meant, but the way he said through his drug filled haze it made perfect sense. He told me it was the current song by the Doobie Brothers and that it was really cool. And that afternoon on the radio I heard it. And I couldn't agree more. 👍 My favorites from them are TKAE ME ON YOUR ARMS AND ROCK ME, LISTEN TO THE MUSIC, ROCKING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, and TAKING IT TO THE STREETS. The last song with Michael McDonald on lead vocals. Enjoy

The 70s were a tough decade to be a little kid: confusing and frightening with generations fighting each other and a lot of screaming and yelling for all the talk of love and peace. I don't know if this was supposed to be a "stoner song" like many assert. Possibly. But fortunately, I was too young to understand that. I remember, way back, getting up the nerve to ask a girl to dance and the band starred this song. It was my first listen. When the slow middle part started, it felt like Jesus was my friend for sure, and immediately my thoughts drifted in a most unspiritual direction. The third part restored things in a timely manner. Thanks for the dance. Top tier song.

I heard a High School Band play this perfect at a Prom. Used to jam "China Grove; Listen to the Music, Long Train Runnin & Take me in your Arms," in a Band Called "Stillwater," The Doobies also had Hits with "What a Fool Believes; Takin it to the Streets, It keeps you Runnin, South City Midnight Lady, & Minute by Minute,." Our Band was having a Picnic, We had a Bonfire and I just Finished playing "Black Water" by The Doobies on a Acoustic Guitar when a Huge Brown Bear came out of The Woods, The Drummer produced a 22 Pistol while the Band stood behind him. He fired a Shot but The Bear just kept coming, We said "We're going to need a Bigger Gun." Lol Thanks, Jesus is just alright with Me.

They had 2 drummers. Jesus Is Just Alright is from the original group. From what I could see in the picture, it also had 2 members that joined later.

I was 16 in 1972 and me and two buddies took a Greyhound to Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens to see The Doobie Bros. Our first concert. They opened the show with this song and we were blown away and hooked in for the next 2 1/2 hours. Life long fan here. Thanks for the memories.
