Introducing Jesus to the secular rock culture/youth of the day was a cool thing. The "hippies" of the counterculture were often popularly referred to as "freaks". Similarly, the kids of the hippie generation of the '60s and '70s who embraced Jesus were called "Jesus Freaks". A film released in 1973 based on the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" that told the Gospel with iconic musical performances became a worldwide phenomenon. Thanks for the reminder on this Christmas eve of the reason for the season. Merry Christmas and God bless you all.

"Jesus Is Just Alright" was written and recorded by gospel singer Art Reynolds in 1966. The Byrds were the first rock band to cover the song. It's the first track on side two of their 1969 album, Ballad of Easy Rider, released as an adjunct to the seminal 1969 film, Easy Rider. The Doobie Brothers released their version as the second single from their 1972 album Toulouse Street. It cracked the top forty and pretty much became the definitive version of the song.

While many turned to drugs, there were some who turned to Jesus. They were called Jesus freaks. Blind Faith did "Presence of the Lord," and even Bob Dylan did some religious songs. This song by the Doobies surprised me then, nevertheless. I am glad they did it, and I'm glad you reviewed it.

"And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." Luke 2:7-14. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and to live forever. Read John 3:16-17...

Read all four gospels. Jesus of Nazareth was born to a virgin in Bethlehem in only half of them. Scholars agree that there was no census that had people visiting ancestral homes and that the lie that Jesus was born in Bethlehem was to tie him to a Hebrew Bible prophecy of a future King of Israel.
@mark-be9mq

@Leonard Shevlin news sources differ on details of every historical event. Even, esp today. Only Mark doesn't record his birth but acknowledges his life immediately. John ssys , " Word became flesh." Which refers only to Christs birth. If two give the place and none contradicts them. It's pretty solid information. Josephus and Tacitus, Jewish and Roman historians of the era, both write of the existence of Jesus of Nazareth as a real historical individual. They had no reason to support his existence as his life countered many of their beliefs. What's more, there is consensus among historians that Jesus is a real historical person. There's no reliable, unbiased, historical source that's denies Jesus' existence that's today. You can choose to believe his Devinity or not. But Jesus, the man, existed. That's my best foray into the question. Hsveca merry Christmas. Peace. For us all

The early era of the Doobie Brothers, was rockin, and they had such a great edge to their sound. This was lost when Michael McDonald joined them. He completely changed their sound, and though it became more refined, it was never the same band. I much preferred the original.

Songs like this and Spirit in the Sky were written as commentary on the Jesus Revolution taking place in the Hippie movement of the late 60's and early 70's. A movie by Lionsgate featuring Kelsey Grammar as Pastor Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel who was instrumental and at the epicenter of this phenomenon, is coming out in February.

You might have thought this was going to be a Christmas song, but no. As pointed out below, Jesus and spirituality became "in" for a few years around the time that "Jesus Christ Superstar" became a hit on Broadway and the song "Day By Day" from the show also became a hit. The show "Hair" and the five hit singles that came from it and its bestselling album were all the rage in '68-'69 and paved the way for this. If you really want to "go to church", try "Oh Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins Singers, which was a big hit.

As me and my dad walked in the pastor started speaking so crazy stuff then we realized he had a live snake around his neck and jar of im sure was moonshine then he started spitting the shine out on a lighter to make a huge flame and was jumping around I guess dancing. Then a group of people was chanting had there hands on this large table it started levitating. Dad grabbed me we got the hell out of there. 👹👿✝..Mary Christmas
