Tarantino is one of my favourite filmmakers ever, and in today's video I wanna look at Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (again) under a new light. I want to tackle the film from the perspective that this is the director's swan song. This is how Tarantino says goodbye...

I think this perfectly sums up my love for this film, it’s not the flair, it’s not the “Tarantino” scenes. Hell the feel almost out of place. It’s that scene of booth being taken to the ambulance, I think that is the best scene he’s ever committed to film. And he’s an amazing director

It’s a movie specifically about thinking about how you want to be remembered. It’s as much about the characters trying to be remembered as actors in films or as it tries to change real history as it is about Tarantino wanting to be remembered as a filmmaker. That’s why he referenced so many of his own films in it. Really good video

It’s “I’m the Devil, and i’m here to do the Devil’s business.” Tarantino didn’t come up with that, Tex Watson actually said that to Wolciech Frykowski when he woke him up on the couch and kicked him in the head. Wolciech was partially drunk and had fallen asleep on Sharon’s couch, and when Tex entered the house alone he woke him up by kicking him in the face. Wolciech asked “Who the hell are you?!” And Tex responded with that. I actually like that Tarantino had Tex say that line, because i’m sure when the real Tex said it in real life he probably felt pretty chuffed about it, like he was a scary badass. In OUATIH, when the actor says the line, it sounds stupid and kind of cringeworthy, and i love that. Makes Tex seem like a moron (he kinda was one) and like he had planned on saying the line beforehand.

2 points of contention. 1.) This is his 9th movie, not his tenth. It is a goodbye but this is the Climax. His next film will be the epilogue. (There's some confusion about this in the comments.) 2.) Yes the film is a goodbye but you ignored my favorite part about Cliff being driven away. It implies they will continue to see each other, contrary to their original plans. Cliff tells him to stay but Rick says he's going to come check on him in the morning. Tarantino sets it up like they'll never see each other again. But the Manson attack changes their circumstances and brings them back together. (Edit for spelling.)

@@User-jo7jp TL:DR - Tarantino says Kill Bill is 1 movie. I saw an interview with him (might've been a panel) while he was promoting Once Upon A Time. He stated Kill Bill counts as 1 movie, he only split it for the distributors/theaters. And because he knew there was confusion he has the hateful Eight trailer say (The 8th film by quentin tarantino) and once upon a time's second trailer (the 2 and a half minute long one) states it's the 9th film by Tarantino immediately after the part where DiCaprio lights the Nazi's on Fire.

@@abrimfulofasha Yeah he was also talking about doing a Faster Pussycat Kill Kill Remake, an Inglorious Basterds adjacent story called Killer Crows and a host of others. Kill Bill 3 has appeared and disappeared from his Imdb, so I'm not putting stock in anything until there's an official announcement. I think he is (rightfully) having a tough time choosing the subject of his final film. And he's writing the Once Upon A Time In Hollywood novel just to buy himself more time whole he decides.

I knew he wouldn`t go there because of the revisionistic Themes in "Inglorious Basterds". Both Movies have in common that it fulfills Tarantinos Fantasy about a History as it SHOULD have been in contrast to the unfairness it often is. Also, it wouldn`t be Tarantinos style to exploit a Tragedy for its own sake as other, shittier Filmmakers tend to do. He`s surprisingly restraint when you think about it when it comes to treating his Characters with Dignity... never show them too much in their pain, doesn`t use nudity as a Gimmick etc. I could therefore enjoy the ride and was curious how the heck this strange Guy is supposed to be the Hero of the story in the end...

Ooh I could spend days talking about my adoration for OUATIH. It feels like an instant classic, a love letter to cinema and filmmaking. An absolutely exquisite masterpiece from start to finish. Possibly one of the most atmospheric films from the haunting use of California Dreamin to the sun soaked aesthetics of Sunset Boulevard, Spahn Ranch and Cielo Drive or the pure nasty dread and horror of the Manson murder buildup. Plus Out of Time is a spectacular needle drop. I love the sound design, I love the soundtrack, I love the lighting, colour and camera angles, I love Leo and Brad's performances. Could this be Tarantino having us say goodbye to the version of him we currently know? I always assumed that Rick wasn't totally done with Hollywood or films. He’s only made 9 movies. Kill Bill is one film that he was made to cut in half as the studio didn’t believe people would want to watch a 4 hour film in the theater. I would say in a few years, we will get a trailer for his 10th film. Whether that’s his final film or not, we’ll see. I saw an article after the release of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that Tarantino told someone that he could see himself making possible 5 more films after Once Upon a Time. However, I’ve not been able to find it since summer 2019, as I didn’t think it would be something never talked about again as it appeared quite interesting that after all this time, he will continue to make movies after he said he would stop. And people have pointed out that Tarantino loves movies and can’t just stop making them. He may write books and make plays, but he would just continue to make movies as long as he lives as he’s unable to do without making movies in his life.

I think he`s aware but it doesn`t mean his interpretation of the Movie as last Chapter is wrong! It`s more the tone and the themes of the Film which suggest it to be his "Goodbye". I have the Theory that his very last Movie will be a kind of Epilogue to tie all of his other Movies together somehow. Maybe in having Characters come back or using every Actor who ever had a main part again? Or maybe it is also just on thematic Level and he re-visits the more abstract Ideas and themes again. Or maybe that`s all just BS anyway and we interpret too much into it, who knows ;)?

If we take Tarantinos whole Filmography as being a representation and Mirror of his Lifecycles, what does this say about his very last upcoming Movie? If "Once upon a time in Hollywood" was his Goodbye and Finale, what could possibly come next? The word "Epilogue" comes to mind. A post-chapter in which an Author (which Tarantino seems to be more than anything else anyway) seeks final closing, answers remaining Questions and maybe plays with Ideas that had no place on another place. What could such a Movie look like in regards of Tarantino I wonder? (Always taking it for granted, this Theory is valid - intentionally by the director or not). What might be Tarantinos Equivalent to four Hobbits saying Goodbye at the Grey heavens? Whatever it is, I hope it won`t be overly sentimental that`s for sure. But if the rumours are true and it will be some sort of Horrormovie I`d be most happy if he`s getting experimental and weird again.

Having moved away from California recently, it's getting harder for me to watch this film, not because of anything wrong with the movie, but just personal stuff. The release seemed to coincide with things changing for me there. I wanted it to be a beginning, but instead it was more of an epilogue. Bittersweet with a side of bitter.

I totally feel that, man. I just moved city myself, and watching this film just does something to me. It’s not necessarily sad, but it’s a reminder that things change, and that’s okay.

@@RobyFN2169dtf I think things can get worse when we try to deny change, but if you're an artist, you're looking for experiences and movements in your life to help you evolve, as if it's building towards something that's part of a bigger, more authentic expression. I think I envy Tarantino because he has that on such a grand level. Thanks for understanding! I always enjoy your work.

Once upon a time in Hollywood is my favorite film by his! 🎥 It got unnecessary hate! This whole film is built totally different! No it’s not a [pulp fiction] or [kill bill] And that’s the point! This movie is so fun and helps to remind you how good and fun life can be again! Somebody who is NOT TRULY HAPPY! This film brings a smile on my face that life is not so bad at times! This movie takes me out of reality and I’m having so much fun! People are comparing this new movie of his to his Old stuff! And in my opinion you’re not gonna win that battle if you see it like that. Once upon a time in Hollywood is meant not to be anything else he created in the past! 🎥
