Just when you think Robyn's songs are all daydreams and surrealism, we get him remembering his father, the late Raymond Hitchcock. The senior Hitchcock's leg was injured in Normandy during WWII, which leads me to think that the song starts from a memory of catching a bus together when Robyn was about 11. Lovely, and one of those rare insights into what's going on in the man's kaleidescope mind.

I'm not sure what's more lovely, the song or your comment.

I was going to say "Hey, Robyn, you can still see trolley buses in San Fransisco," until I noticed that he was actually standing on Market street in San Francisco in the video. Always one step ahead.

Incredible. 40 plus years into his career and Hitchcock releases a 36 minute masterpiece of an album. And what a great song!

Plus the whole self titled 2017 album is up there with his best. His songwriting has not lost any of the magic quality he displayed in his classic 80s work.

Fantastic, Robyn's beautiful jangly guitar again. I wish there was more of it. Sounds just like the old stuff.

One of Robyn's stated goals was to write truly moving songs and he did it here. i just learned recently that his dad fought in WW2 and got a damaged leg hence the lyric.

this one is up there with my old man, in terms of a songs that offer touching but honest appraisals of the father and son bond. My Old Man, if you haven't heard it is a song by Ian Drury and the Blockheads.

This isn't even the 4th best song on the album, and that's no knock on the song, it's a fantastic album.

Depends which ones you're counting. He's put out a lot of "outtakes" albums, some of which are among his best work. Also depends if you are counting "Robyn Hitchcock" albums or including any of Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians, Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3, or The Soft Boys. I think this is something like the 21st "canonical" album. He's been recording for thirty years.

I guess the days of writing songs like Airscape are long passed. Dishearted by him doing covers on recent albums (The man upstairs, Spooked) but after the great opener (I want to tell you about what I want) I have't really warmed to the album.

I'm loving it, but not as much as Love From London (2013). I think that one stands among his best. Top six maybe (with Eye, Moss Elixir, Respect, IODOT, and Jewels For Sophia). I have no objection to any of the Venus 3 albums, either.

Can't listen to Oslo with the Venus 3. Love from London I'll have to check out again. These days I tend to play stuff like Airscape on the guitar, and have done covers Television (off Spooked) or Ordinary Millionaire (Propellor time) which are good albums. But the last classic album he did was Jewels for Sophia (Star for Bram, its companion album is very good also. And I always get Moss Elixir and Mossy Liquor confused. All together now: Trilobyte! Dwight!

The guitar appears to be a '60s Hofner V1, perhaps, modified with a Ricky toaster pickup and the vibrato arm removed. If this is a current-day re-creation, please, someone post who made it. In addition to the sentiment and songcraft, I love Robyn's sonic sensibilities. Love on ya, baby! ... from across the Bay from those present-day Muni PCC streetcars and their yummy brain-candy colors.

(At 2:25 note the street sign in the upper right of the frame behind Robyn, labeled “Montgomery / Post” - that’s an intersection on Market Street in San Francisco, across from the Palace Hotel.)
