Salute!! Preciate you tapping in! Roc fasho one of the rappers I drop everything to react to. I honestly don’t really even have a huge bias about reacting to underground vs mainstream - I just like breaking down actual lyricism and underground guys run laps around mainstream cats lyrically and probably always will. We get exception with cats like JID and 2010s era Kendrick but I follow the lyricists lol.

I loved the album, but full disclosure, Roc probably has my favourite discography of all time with his consistency. I wrote in my review on AOTY that this production felt like Roc Marci 2.0. The production felt experimental like Mt. Marci but still fresh and different, and I don't know how he is still finding loops that fit his style even better than his previous work. The rhyme schemes he hit on this album were crazy as well! Possibly not as many memorable punch lines as The Elephant Man's Bones but arguably more complex. Really enjoyed this one! Been on repeat since its release!

I feel you dawg! Roc got one of the best discogs in modern rap. I mean I lowkey hate Kaos lol but almost everything else is awesome…even joints that don’t really get a ton of love like behold a dark horse. Mt Marci 2.0 is accurate af!! Both albums have had some of my fav Roc production…I love him going down this more experimental route. I haven’t been the biggest fan of roc’s production…and I feel like he carries the production a lot…but mt Marci and this have joints that I would like even if the rapping was average. Facts! Off only 1 complete listen, my initial impression is that the rapping on this is more consistently better, but he has higher highs and standout moments on elephant man’s bones. And I do have elephant man’s both as slightly better off first listen. You’re talking about on Album of the year . Org right? Can you link me to your review? I couldn’t find it

I’m with you on that! My first time hearing him was behold a dark horse cus it came out in 2018 as I was just getting back plugged into underground rap. His whole rap style of extremely intricate rhyme schemes with high level punching was insane to me. I had heard his name floating around before that as one of the best and it only took one or 2 songs for Me to see why. Been a huge fan ever since

Banger review as always dawg🔥. This album is some serious heat. Roc is really one of the best rhymers ever, and he really has that taste for detail and will highlight the right things to really paint a scene within the matter of a bar or two. And a lot of the times it’s just funny😂. Highkey, we all would love a reaction from you on the new J Cole tape. It’s some of his best rhyming and flowing ever, hands down. It’s downright impressive. But again it showed the large gap between him and someone like Roc. He can flow and rhyme, but in the actual bars, he compromises detail and substance to get there. He’s rapping about his lavish lifestyle, but there’s not any vivid or detail to where you can imagine a scene, and there’s no idiosyncratic specifics to where it feels super real. His devices of choice tend to be similes and entendres, a significant portion of which are downright cringe to where it’s hard to listen😂. Regardless, I feel like you could break it down beautifully and offer great insight to the levels of skill there are in this the game. Especially with the beef going on right now. Blessings g

I’d have to relisten to the album to give you specifics (which I honestly don’t want to do lmaoo). It’s prob not that bad on the grand scheme of things but compared to other roc albums and given how good of a producer of Muggs is, it made no sense for that album to be what it is lol

It’s hard to top Elephant Man’s Bones but this was a great project. A few of Rocs beats were a bit lackluster in my opinion, but he is rapping his ass off as usual. Animoss (Hermit and the Recluse with KA) and Alchemist had dope beats on here. Crimeapple verse was tough.

Love the review, just tapped in after seeing Roc last night in Frisco. Dude rapped for an hour and half all classics. I agreed with you on all the points, I never really got into the KAOS tape.. I thought CRIMEAPPLE went crazy but the rest of the features were kinda weak especially Jay Worthy. I would probably put this in the #4 slot for Roc's discography after Reloaded, Marcberg, TEMB. I would be curious to hear how you rank his albums. They all dope for different reasons tho.

The Boldy joint ain’t completely out of the question yet tbh. I prob won’t double back to the Rome joint (b/c at this point if ima review an album that I heard and not recent, I’d rather do death and the magician). I like the Rome Streetz album but I don’t think it’s as good as Kiss the ring or even Wasn’t Built in a Day which came out earlier last year…and I don’t even think it’s particularly close. I absolutely love his production choices on NK5 tho. I don’t think every beat was great but bruh went for it. Rome’s lane of rap can get a little cookie cutter, but Rome had a lot of beats that were creative af and out of the box but still stayed true to his sound. Reason I don’t like it as much as KIss the ring or wasn’t built in a day is b/c I think the rapping wasn’t as good as Rome usually is. Seemed like he had more emphasis on flow and content than just pure lyricism…and it wasn’t bad….just not quite as good. Boldy….i think I never want to hear him and craven together again lol. Album is fine tbh but I don’t think they pair well together. I think most the songs had pretty good rapping but the song and album overall was boring. One I didn’t like most the production choices from craven…def not as much as Fair Exhange No Robbery (a project that I thinked craven carried Boldy on). Craven essentially just takes a sample and loop them with very little change…and I don’t mind that at all but if he’s going to do that he gotta pick more interesting samples and find more variety. About half the beats sound like they coulda been sampled from the same source. I do think the album picked up at the second half. If the album dropped the first 4 or so songs I prob would be higher on it

Funny enuff, I couldn’t remember the name of the song that flow was from but I knew it was the same song and flow that influenced the flow of Chinese Gunn by Westside Gunn, and chine Gunn ended up getting stuck in my head while I was editing True Love. Thats a sick flow - I love when other rappers have lil subtle nods like that. And bro for real! I didn’t like every single production choice but man Roc is VERY different with the rapping. Faaaacts!! No official release date for the Mach tape but a lot of folks are speculating that his new take “richasshatian” is gonna drop on the weekend of Haitian flag day which is May 18th. I’m leaning Elephant Man’s bones VERY slightly as well. I think this album took more risks than elephant man’s bones from the production side but I can’t deny the Alc production was a little better, even tho I think it wasn’t the best alc and he played it safe. LMFAOOO im self aware to know im prejudice against strings 😂 Man it’s just a specific type of strings tho. Like I swear every other underground rap song in the 2010s had the same few strings and it got old years ago lol. Ransom is the worst offender of it lol…where with him I think that was a really popular production style when he first starting blowing up and he never stopped using em. Its like the OGs who still be wearing Sean jeans and South Pole 😂 Good string samples I still love like kitchen lights by Westside gun. The ones from roc here weren’t actually that bad by themselves, it just got repetitive.

Yeah you’re 100% right - I knew I was gonna wanna take that comment back after I made it 😂 Yeah I’ll even go as far as to say Elzhi’s rapping on heavy vibrato is better than rocs rapping here and that’s saying A LOT. Elzhi had multiple points where he rapped every single syllable
