Older Rochdale was so beautiful & had so much character, the architecture & shop fronts were breathtaking…..

This video is both sad and beautiful at the same time. The sadness coming from the deterioration and the loss of community that once was but also the beauty of what was and the rich history of this town. This video is not just some normal watch, this is an art piece and the content shows that you really put time into this and studied this great town and i appreciate your time and dedication. Sir you have gained a like and a subscription.

Thank you for this wonderful, pictorial history of Rochdale. It's a precious reminder of what a great place it was. Sadly, most of the buildings that should have been kept and maintained were razed to the ground. Only the old buildings are worth a second glance. The town is a disgrace these days.

Yeah course it's the immigrants fault. Absolutely nothing to do with the likes of you and me favouring supermarkets and Amazon over the high street, right? Nothing to do with a lack of investment from Government. Its always the immigrants fault

I worked in Rochdale for 15 years at a company named holcrofts located at the whitworth, littleborough roundabout.. The factory was demolished in 1988, I've not been back to the town since but have very fond memories of the town. The flying horse pub was a favourite place to socialise with work friends.

I love seeing the history of places. This makes me quite sad though. I often look at the old abandoned buildings and think these were something at one time and it's such a shame they're no longer looked after. Rochdale could be so much better.

These videos with their before/after scenes of cities and towns are always fascinating though it's sad seeing the existing countryside surrounding these towns slowly disappear under houses and factories. There were so many people on the streets 100 years ago. Now those same streets are almost deserted. How sad they look. Also, some of the slum, or almost slum areas, were very depressing, and alas, the same areas nowadays are just as depressing but in a different way. Gone are the streets of slum properties only to be replaced with grim brick square buildings or sad commercial buildings with not a soul in sight. It is a pity though that some of those very old, beautiful properties weren't kept as a reminder of the past.

I have never been to Rochdale, sadly, but it all seemed so familiar through the ages. This is the story of Rochdale, but it is also the story of every town of any size north of Derby, where I grew up. Hence the familiarity. You recorded well the vandalism of senseless demolition in all eras, culminating in the steel and concrete horrors of the 1960s and later. So many gems have been lost over the years to civic development and we are all the poorer for it. One of the latest was the Crooked House pub in Dudley. Sold by Marston's to a property developer, it mysteriously caught fire after the access road was mysteriously blocked by truckload of debris to prevent the fire service was unable to access it with the result that it was gutted. Mystery no.3 was when it was demolished in the night before anyone could organise remedial action. Vandalism comes in many forms and apparently no-one had thought to seek listed status. Now it is gone forever, famous though it was among the local community.

16:26 I'm now convinced that Rochdale was inhabited by pygmies at the turn of the 1900's. The houses on Maud Street in the old image look huge and imposing next to the size of the adult woman stood in the doorway. I went to the primary school on Maud Street and the houses didn't seem so huge to me back then in the late 70's / early 80's.
